YOU be the final decider! I know we've had the discussion before, but I want to know majority rule just so I can tell Droppin' he's wrong.

When you open a can of pop it doesn't go "Soooda!", it goes "Pop!".
If it said "Sodaaa!" I'd be a little scared.

Miho Mingu

Soda it is. Pop and Coke are just slang terms, and the latter shouldn't even be a general term, in the first place, as it's a shortened-form of Coca-Cola.

Everyone in WV called it POP or COKE. I personally just used the brand name when I was telling someone about it or telling someone to buy some.

So I had to say "bring back some coca cola" if i said bring back some pop...they could come back with some nasty generic shit.

Yeah, but if you go by that, you'd say something like "I'd like to buy a VROOOOM!" instead of "I'd like to buy a car." You say soda because it's an adjective. Soda water was what it was originally called. Soda's an adjective and pop is a verb.

SODA! wooO!

jackrock

1. i'm going to start calling anything with an engine a Vrrrooooommm!, cause it'd be sweet

2. We're talking pop here, drinks, not vehicles.

QueenAdrock

So should we start calling milk GLUG GLUG GLUG and water drippy drip drip then?

I should start, it'd be super-retarded. Much like pop. :p

I thought non-carbonated was pop. Loads of Brits call it that anyway.
btw what do you call non-carbonated drinks then? Like homemade saft (http://www.ceriks.se/storabilder/saft.JPG) (almost like juice, but made with water and loads of sugar).

The British have a really screwed up usage of carbonated and non-carbonated drinks (see Wikipedia link above).

To use North American terms...

Coca-Cola/Pepsi/7Up/Sprite/Dr. Pepper, etc. = Pop or Soda (or "Soda Pop")

I heard someone ask for an "orange coke" one time, and I was like, you fuckin' kidding me?

I also hate when I go to someplace and when they ask me what kind of soda I want and I say "Diet Coke" they're like "We only have Pepsi, is that okay?" I'd like to meet the person who makes the hissy fit over that and slap them. It all pretty much tastes the same, why you gotta be snotty over brands? C'mon.

Miho Mingu
07-15-2006, 02:11 AM
Really? Because whenever I go to any fast-food restaurant, and I ask for Pepsi, they always tell me they don't have it--just Coke. Not that I'm picky at all, but I'm just pointing out that I have never come across a restaurant that carries Pepsi.

This was Taco Bell. They only have Pepsi products there.

Either way, I don't caaaare!

Miho Mingu
07-15-2006, 02:21 AM
Oh that figures. I rarely eat there. I'd rather have authentic tacos, but even those places are scarce in my area.

Next time, I'm going to use "refreshment" when speaking of soda.

Miho Mingu

If you know what you want, just say the specific brand. I never use the word soda. Coke, I use, when I want a Coca-Cola.

Coke is coke.

But,

Dr. Pepper = coke.

Sprite = coke.

Orange Crush = coke.

If you don't like it you don't have to dance.

b-grrrlie

Coke is only the brown yucky stuff, it can be Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Cuba Cola (yeah they had that here at least in the 80's, you might even find it somewhere still), Tab, Dr Pepper or whatever. All the other colours are sodas.

Me, I don't touch the carbonated stuff at all, except any lime/lemon, but it has to have loads of vodka and ice with it then...

Miho Mingu
07-15-2006, 02:53 PM
Sprite is produced by the Coca-Cola company, but Dr. Pepper and Orange Crush are produced by Cadbury-Schweppes.

It's up to you how you want to refer to any beverage, though.

Right, most of my fellow retarded Michiganders also refer to it as pop.

However, seeing that soda is most uniformly recognized as a carbonated beverage, no matter where I go, I prefer to call it soda. A very long time ago I asked someone for a pop when I was out of state and they didn't know what I was talking about... so since I also recognized the word soda as the same thing, I said that and they got it.

Problem solved. That's a pretty damn long and boring explanation of why I choose soda, but you get it now, right?

I get ya, but in Canada, it's the reverse. You'd get weird looks if you called things "soda." We know what it is, but "pop" is just the word we use.

It's called regionalisms, people.

But generically calling soda pop "coke" is a tad scary...

i prefer water, cause that shit is right bad for ya........unless you add vodka....

Representin' the Southside here...it's Coke.

Coke is Coke and Pepsi is Coke.
Sprite is Sprite.
Sunkist is "whatever orange drink you have".
And Faygo is king! 'Specially since it's so cheap!

Nobody down here says pop or soda, it's just unheard of.

befsquire

it's all coke unless you're at a restaurant, and then you ask for what you want specifically.

i went through a dr pepper phase when i was with my children's father, and he'd call before coming home and he'd ask whether i needed anything. i'd answer "coke" and he knew that meant dr pepper. then for a while, coke really meant coke, and then it meant diet coke.

now, i usually just ask bobby to hand me an accessory, since i always have to take one with me wherever i go.

YEAH AND YOUR REGION IS INFERIOR! USA! USA! Specifically, to DC. D-C! D-C! WOOO!

And I said soda when I was up there, and they knew what I was talking about. The only time I got weird looks was when I said "Pop," in a condescending voice and then started giggling at its retardedness.
