I just got the Paul's Boutique 33 1/3rd book yesterday (Finished it in 2 hours), and for anyone who hasn't gotten a chance to read it yet, it mentioned something really interesting about "The Sounds of Science".
Apparently that noise in the very beginning of the song, that sounds like one of those toys that are like a can, and then you turn it upside down and it makes a moo sound, it's not that at all--I'll quote the book:
"The barnyard noises on the track have been commonly assumed to be a cow-(or sheep)-in-a-can--a toy that approximates the sound of a farm animal when turned upside down. Not so, according to Mike Simpson. "I don't wanna say where it's from, but it's basically a famous person's voice, that I tweaked in such a way that you would never know what the original source is. But it does sound exactly like a cow-in-a-can.""
I tried speeding it up, but nothing clicked. Anyone else want to guess?

I still couldn't place it. Thanks for the idea, but this is probably going to be a tough one to crack.

If I had to guess, I would say it's probably the voice of 1 of the Beatles since the song already has so many Beatles samples . Here's something else, I don't know if it's been discussed or not: towards the end of the song at about the 2:50 mark, if you listen closely you hear what sounds like a Beatles sample singing something that sounds like "somebody, somebody". Anyone out there know what I'm talking about? Let's discuss.

Sorry, I was listening to the instrumental from DUB THE BOUTIQUE & since it's a little faster, it comes on sooner at the 2:50 mark I said. On the regular CD version with vocals, it starts at the 3:00 mark right after "that is strictly rope I've got science". Listen in the background for "somebody, somebody". It starts at the 3:00 mark & continues until the end of the song.

I found it interesting that the ping-pong noises on 3-Minute Rule came from people actually playing ping-pong in the background. This all because Mike (I think it was Mike) went out and rented a bunch of game tables and equipment to blow more of Capitol's dough! Hahaha, whatta rock star. Some spend the album advance money on hookers and coke, not Mike, he knows how to party! (that said, I'm sure some of that cash back then was snorted and popped) But c'mon the guys need props for hookin up the games. That's rad.

The sounds at the beginning is from the small toy in a can that would make a "mmmoooooooooo" sound each time it was turned upside down.

Sounds Of Science, DEF one of my all time fav B-Boys songs. I dont think it would be possible for me not to move while listening to that song.

I've seen that website before. It's very good. However, read Thebanjohype's post at the beginning of this thread. I'll repost the quote from Mike Simpson who was there when the track was made:
"I don't wanna say where it's from, but it's basically a famous person's voice, that I tweaked in such a way that you would never know what the original source is. But it does sound exactly like a cow-in-a-can."
I guess we'll never know. This is going to be a mystery that will rank right up there with the identity of the person Carly Simon is attacking in YOU'RE SO VAIN.:D

I'm pretty wowed that somebody else noticed the "somebody" noise at 3:00. I'd been hearing that for months, but I never thought anyone else did. Kudos. It's still anyone's guess what either noise is. It never sounded like "somebody" to me, just some kind of scat or utterance from a dance song or something. I've temporarily lost access to my program that lets me tweak songs around, so I can't investigate further, but maybe someday I'll recognize the noise in something.

"The Dust Brothers: Talking Tech With The Godfathers Of Sampling" (http://mixonline.com/mag/audio_dust_brothers/index.html)
Nothing about the moo thing :) but interesting anyway.

I listened to Sounds Of Science on my home system, and can't make out any individual words but did get the feeling the guy's voice is kind of nasal sounding, kind of like Donovan's or Tom Petty's.
....ping-pong noises on 3-Minute Rule came from people actually playing ping-pong in the background.
In the right speaker at the end of the ping-pong thing, you can hear someone's sneakers squeaking.
