Eh, you'll get over it. I had a hard-drive crash several years ago, and lost all my music, but before you know it, you'll re-collect a new collection in no time.

i know, i'm still really fucking upset about the music, and the programs i have to get back - photoshop, illustrator, indesign etc. and photos too. i need to make a list. this like this are hard when you have a computer addiction.

You have my sympathies. When I lost my hard-drive, I had to say goodbye to a lot of porn that was near irreplaceable. I was inconsolable, until I went online and downloaded some more.

can someone tell me why this happened? was it my fault? i'd like to avoid occurrences like this in the future.

Ace42X

can someone tell me why this happened?

There can be a number of causes:

1. Turning off the PC without windows shutting down properly, etc. If the drive is in use when it turns off, data will be partially written, and if the read-head is on the disc surface when the power goes off, is not in a safe position.

2. Magnets close to the drive. Speakers or CRT monitors are obvious candidates.

3. Drive old age - alas, it happens.

4. Bad / Mismatched RAM. Can cause problems with the drive access, causing it to dump garbage and end up ruining the FAT, and consequently the whole drive.

5. Vibrations, drives HATE vibrations.

6. Smoking, although less of a problem for modern well-sealed drives, it could be a contributing factor in some situations. Smoke sticks to sensitive surfaces.

7. Viruses, they can be programmed to corrupt drive data.

zorra_chiflada

ok:
1. doubtful
2. maybe
3. absolutely not
4. no
5. probably :(
6. no way
7. perhaps

Man, my drive makes an occasional, loud buzzing noise, and I'm worried. I should burn off all the important files to DVD soon. ;\

Like all the bad things in life, swift onset doesn't necessarily indicate immediate cause. Any of the above could've been working in concert for however long your drive was in operation, slowly corrupting random sectors. However, if the whole drive has got fzzt, suggesting the disc surface itself is corrupted, that suggests the drive read head has crashed onto the disc itself (vibrations) or it was SERIOUSLY derased by a strong magnetic force, less likely given how well modern drives are shielded.

If the drive just stopped accessing (IE the data wasn't corrupted, just inaccessible) - chances are a chip on the logic board blew. If you can get an identical drive with the same logic board (IE the same firmware on the logic board) you can replace just that and access the magnetic part of the disc, reclaiming lost data.

I had a itunes accident several years ago and nearly lost all my music.

I learned a HUGE lesson and I store everything I care about on a backup harddrive. In fact, I have two backup harddrives. When my old computer finally died this spring, it took me only about a day to get everything up and running on a new computer because of the backup harddrives. I know that they're expensive, but if you can possibly afford one, they're a great investment.

get two drives and mirror your shit if you are concerned about the possibility of it happening again. Hard drive space is cheap enough.

I owned my first computer for almost 4 years and the last message it ever sent me was 'start backing up files now, your harddrive has sustained PHYSICAL DAMAGE'

and then she just straight up died and the techie dude I brought in to give her a once over was just all "whoah, its like you have this thing for 8 years with the amount of damage youve done to it"

WEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

almost all my music is on cd's that i've actually bought. and the bit that i have downloaded is on my mp3 player. and i periodically back up pirated software(cad programs for school and things like that) to my mp3 player as well. i would do a raid 1 (currently using raid 0 for speed) but it seems like a waste to me. oh yeah, try enabling S.M.A.R.T. in the bios. it tells you when your hard drives are about to crap out. you get into the bios be tapping delete at the very first boot screen.

I'm on my 4th computer in the last 8-10 months or so. The original one had everything I could possibly ever need, then all of a sudden it just up and died. Not all the other computers quit, we just got better ones for free, though it was frusterating trying to get back all of my stuff (still haven't). I'm tempted to take an old computer, get her fired up and take out the heat sink, hell if a computer's gonna die, it had better die cool.

My previous computer got locked up all of a sudden when I was playing Metal Gear Solid. It completely froze, and when I restarted it said I should re-install windows. Luckily most of my shit (songs, movies, games) are stored on a separate harddrive :)

I hope to get a new pc soon, before this one crashes xD

same happened to me. my laptop went kaput. which was a good thing, probably, as i was still on dial up and raking up £100 phone bills. not good.

the power in thingie got all bent and uh, thingied and the male part of it sort of, uh, broke off inside the female part inside the uh.. laptop (due to flatmate storming past me and ripping it out violently when it was inserted). i could only charge it if i put a tiny piece of aluminium on the end making a, er.. live connection and holding it just so. lots of sparks, heat and electric shockage followed. my battery adapter started beeping, man. that sorta isht wasn't even included in the manual. not a good idea.

so i replaced it. more cost effective that getting the whole previous one fixed, seeing as i probably melted the motherboard. an acer aspire 5672. see gift thread in sure shots. sexy as hell. 120G hardrive, 2G RAM, wireless, sexy sexy sexy stuff. now i just have to wait for the goddamned talktalk broadband to come!

if you have 2 drives, you just copy from one to the other

TurdBerglar

put it on another hard drive? copy it to dvds?

or set up a raid 1 but that's not the easiest thing

i have three in my pc. two are in raid. meaning there are set up to act as one hard drive. so they both have the same information on them. that offers backing up abilities if one of the drives dies and it offer higher data transfer rates.

Yes. That's what I do with my external harddrive. I store an extra copy of everything on there.

I have a mac laptop and I don't understand anything about computers except how to backup my laptop's memory every month or so. I learned that at the Apple Store when I had an itunes disaster with my old laptop (caused by human error). I didn't think there was any other option.

when my old computer crashed, i just took my old hard drive and made it my slave drive. but instead of using it to backup, it holds up to 60 gigs worth of movies, usually at full capacity
