responsibility sucks anyway.
cosmo105
07-18-2006, 02:11 AM
it's not much responsibility. it's just the fact that i was doing a great job where i was, what i was HIRED for, and i know they're making a big mistake. this guy seems nice enough, but he's not right for the position. when someone comes in asking for a specific product, you don't tell them, "you don't want that, you want this and that and you need to change your life because then you won't need that anymore." true as that may be, that's not the way to serve someone.
i've also heard some whisperings between him and the owner about them both being christian...that had better not be part of it. i kind of doubt it, but still.
fucker's probably willing to work for less than i was. ugh.
if i'm going to be stuck doing something like this, i might as well go apply somewhere i'll be more appreciated and have more freedom.
they're seriously going to regret losing me.

I'm going to be a cashier soon. I will like it, when I know what I'm doing. They're just customers, right? Evil, snappy customers.

sad but true, and the bottom line is whatevers the most cost effective is in their best interest as a bidness. Everyones expendable.
I look forward to getting laid off, but its taking forever at my job

07-18-2006, 02:18 AM
the thing is, i don't think they realize just how often they turn to me. i can work pretty much anyone's job in that store, and i'm the only person outside of the owners that can open and close the place and put together the deposit (only ONE other person can do that). so basically i think they're going to be fucked when i leave. that's why i stayed so long when i was on the register...because i knew they needed me. now...i don't give half a shit about being loyal to those bastards.

seriously, i don't know...i don't really think that weighs into it, but it irritated me to find out that the new guy was all "have a blessed day" and shit, and i think my immediate superiors even left him a note saying don't bring your religion into it or something. i don't fucking know. i'm still kind of in shock. i mean, fuck, i get so much good feedback from customers. i KNOW i was doing a great job there. ugh.
do they know you're so vital? just threaten to walk. if they need you badly enough maybe they'll offer you something nice to stay.
jesus and I love you cosmo.

AMERICANS WITH NO ABILITIES ACT - CONGRESSIONAL ACT 2006
WASHINGTON , DC (AP) - Congress is considering sweeping legislation, which provides new benefits for many Americans. The Americans With No Abilities Act (AWNAA) is being hailed as a major legislation by advocates of the millions of Americans who lack any real skills or ambition.
"Roughly 50 percent of Americans do not possess the competence and drive necessary to carve out a meaningful role for themselves in society," said Barbara Boxer. "We can no longer stand by and allow People of Inability to be ridiculed and passed over. With this legislation, employers will no longer be able to grant special favors to a small group of workers, simply because they do a better job, or have some idea of what they are doing."
The President pointed to the success of the US Postal Service, which has a long-standing policy of providing opportunity without regard to performance. Approximately 74 percent of postal employees lack job skills, making this agency the single largest US employer of Persons of Inability.
Private sector industries with good records of nondiscrimination against the Inept include retail sales (72%), the airline industry (68%), and home improvement "warehouse" stores (65%) The DMV also has a great record of hiring Persons of Inability. (63%)
Under the Americans With No Abilities Act, more than 25 million "middle man" positions will be created, with important-sounding titles but little real responsibility, thus providing an illusory sense of purpose and performance.
Mandatory non-performance-based raises and promotions will be given, to guarantee upward mobility for even the most unremarkable employees. The legislation provides substantial tax breaks to corporations which maintain a significant level of Persons of Inability in middle positions, and gives a tax credit to small and medium businesses that agree to hire one clueless worker for every two talented hires.
Finally, the AWNA ACT contains tough new measures to make it more difficult to discriminate against the Nonabled, banning discriminatory interview questions such as "Do you have any goals for the future?" or "Do you have any skills or experience which relate to this job?"
"As a Nonabled person, I can't be expected to keep up with people who have something going for them," said Mary Lou Gertz, who lost her position as a lug-nut twister at the GM plant in Flint, MI due to her lack of notable job skills. "This new law should really help people like me." With the passage of this bill, Gertz and millions of other untalented citizens can finally see a light at the end of the tunnel.
Said Senator Ted Kennedy, "It is our duty as lawmakers to provide each and every American citizen, regardless of his or her adequacy, with some sort of space to take up in this great nation and also find a place for all illegal aliens no matter how useless they may be."

That's too bad, but I wonder if they put you on the register because you maybe interact with people well. You know a lot about the stuff your store sells--maybe they want you at the registers to be a face for their products as well as someone to answer questions.
(When I'm in a store, I tend to avoid the people who wander the floors looking for people who are there to educate and help. Those people usually do neither and I usually feel hounded by them. So usually when I have a question, I just ask at the register.)

i honestly don't know why they got someone else to do my job. i think either it's because he's a) available to work in the mornings and evenings, b) willing to work for less, or c) seems to have more experience than i do. i suppose i could understand wanting someone like that, but i've been there for just less than a year, and the department runs smoothly. a lot of customers come in specificially to talk to me, and they've said to the management a few times how lucky they are to have me.
at this point i really don't know what their reaction will be if i tell them i've got options. (i had some interviews with the manager of the place i'm thinking of now a few months ago, and i could tell they really wanted me there. i have a feeling that'll be a better environment anyway, i mean, if i'm going to be a cashier i might as well do it somewhere that i'm not so depended on if that makes sense, and somewhere i can dye my hair how i friggin want it .) i figure i'm going to do interviews at two places that i know could use me and see what their offers are, and go back saying "i won't stay at the register for anything less than a raise."
the reason i first went on the register was because, my second night their, one of the cashiers had to leave suddenly. for good. and they asked me if i could take that position while they searched for a new one. i agreed because i wanted to impress them, and i knew they needed me. that lasted for months, and months, and months...finally about 4 or 5 months ago they hired a new girl and i was able to go to where i was supposed to be: the supplement aisle. and i've been very happy there. occasionally i'll pick up some hours on the register here and there when i'm needed, but for the most part i get to do what i like best. not anymore. i'm really kind of shocked that they just did this out of the blue.
i'll stick around for a while until i can figure out what will be best...it's not so much that i don't like the registers (which i dont, i'll do it when they need me but that's not what i was hired for), but i know the whole time that guy's in MY aisle telling MY customers (and i really do care about these people) shit that i could do better...and i'm watching him from the damned register...i'll be a seething cauldron of rage.
:(
Working the register sucks. People try to take advantage of you. Then the pressure of coming up even at the end of the night. I'd rather stock shelves.

No don't let it turn you into cauldrons of anything. Otherwise, you'll have to ask him to help you find some sort of supplement to help you with high blood pressure or IBS or something.
Maybe wait and see--some crazy good thing might come from it. I've found that the things I've fought the hardest in my life (fought and lost) were things that, time showed, were amazingly good for me. Unbelievably and sometimes eerily so.
I'm truly not rationalizing. I've just seen it happen so, so many times personally that I've learned not to fight a lot of it. I rely on a gut feeling that I get and it took awhile to develop that but I have and it's just so much easier if I let life happen in that way. I'm sorry if this sounds 60s hippie free love hempy but for me at least, there's a whole lot of truth to it.

07-18-2006, 12:18 PM
hah. i gotcha, enree. ;)
i figure i'll at least give it a chance. but i'm going to explore my options. i'm just kind of gutted that they did this to me. pretty insulting i feel really bad for the chick they fired from the registers...she really, really needs the money. she was crying when she came out of the office. :(
the guy was totally kissing my ass last night too. when he was asking me how i eat/live and i told him about being vegan and eating blah blah he went "wow, we're like two peas in a pod!" and i thought "don't you dare say that again you bastard."

Is there any way that they think it's better to work the register? Is there any way they don't understand that you don't want to work the register? I've never worked in a small place, but when I worked at a store it was more status (and more money) to work the register.
It seems that if they knew you would be so disappointed, they would have handled it better. Or maybe they're just self-centered and figured that you're the only one who won't steal from them so they don't care if you're happy.
Also, is there any way that they figure you are so cool and you're in school so you're not going to hang around for the long haul whereas this new clown will because he's not as cool and hasn't got a future? That happened to me when I was in college. I was upset till I realized that they were putting the gal they promoted over me on some kind of career track and I didn't plan on still working retail when I was 25.
cosmo105
07-18-2006, 10:13 PM
i totally get what you're saying, doc. but i wasn't planning on changing jobs...i really hate this process. and i was happy there! bleh. granted, i'm not planning on making a career there, but i was planning on being there for years. hell, i've been there almost a year already. and i was originally supposed to be in the supp. department. they know i'm much happier there. i don't know what the fuck hapenned.
i talked to the manager at tj's today...he remembered me from about 6 months back when i interviewed there and then turned down the job because i was so loyal to these fuckers (), and when i talked to him today he said that because his college kids are out of school his schedule's full right now. but come a month from now, he wants me to call (and he took my name and number in case anything comes up), and he's "very, very interested in having me there" and knows that i would do well in that position. it looks like i have that lined up, pretty much. so i'm going to stick it out for that month...besides, to be honest, the guy's horrible. tonight he stuck with one person for a full hour (almost an hour and a half), and i helped about...i'm guessing 8 people. probably more.
and i've heard from other employees that he does that too. this morning, yet again, a customer came in and said he/she wanted something, and he proceeded to tell that cutomer, "no, you don't want that, you want to eat differently and change your lifestyle and buy this and this and that..."
sure, that would solve the problem. but we're not life coaches here. we're a STORE. and we do customer service. he makes them feel stupid and like they're doing everything wrong...guy even had the nerve to tell me some shit i already knew. and he calls me JESS. if i wanted him to call me jess, i would have introduced myself as jess. 3 SYLLABLES. JESS-I-CA.

oh god, don't do your old job for free. that's exactly what they want you to do.

Sorry to hear this management sometimes makes screwy decisions, especially in retail.
But:
i think either it's because he's a) available to work in the mornings and evenings, b) willing to work for less, or c) seems to have more experience than i do.
...those could be pretty compelling reasons for a manager, really. Especially the flexibility issues, which some managers also read as "I can control this person" or "this person's a team player!"

ok, it makes sense now. apparently yesterday they had a meeting with some of the other employees and told them that they really didn't want to do this, but they were afraid they'd have to let some of them go and cut back on their hours (in fact, they let go 2 other people, and i really felt lucky i still even had a job). and the owner and her daughters were talking to them about the state of the store - they're having trouble paying their bills, and business has been really, really tough. and the owner started crying :( and said that they're considering closing up. that floored me. she opened the place with her husband in 1959, man. this place was her dream. her baby. and i know how much it means to her and her family. it's their livelihood. so i totally understand now.
i mean, the new guy's still a total cocksucker. wrong guy for the job. but i understand. i feel so bad for them. i'm just sort of glad i have something lined up in case this ship sinks.
nice. the classic...we might be closing down excuse. with the tears even.

no, seriously. i know it's not a scare tactic. this place is their lives. and i know that business has been really bad. wal-mart started selling organic, and a new whole foods is going to be built down the street within about a year, so they're totally fucked.
