The future shop and best buy websites both state that it is one disc, but also say that there is an exclusive - it just doesn't say what the exclusive is. The future shop flyer for this week specifically mentions the bonus disc. I pre-ordered from the FS website (at $14.99 CAD it's the cheapest, and that includes american sites I've checked). I might buy at the store on the 25th just in case, and just return the extra, or offer it here if anyone is in need.

Hate to be a party-pooper but Best Buy has done this sort of thing before i.e. exclusive content or bonus stuff that no other retailer has (example: they were allowed to 100% exclusively sell a huge Elton John dvd set - IIRC some other large chain stores protested this by pulling all their Elton John titles from their shelves for a week). These exclusive deals between huge corporations, in this case Capitol/EMI & Best Buy, are what helps to put small chain & mom-n-pop independent music stores out of business.*

And unless they've changed this policy recently, BB also sells lots of CDs for under what they paid for them simply to get people into their stores so maybe they'll wander around and buy a toaster or some software for their computer. And if just one of those people buys a $4000 HDTV, its more than worth it to lose a few dollars on some CDs. BTW: despite the high-pressure sales tactics, BB employees are not on commission.

For more fun info about BB, go here: www.bestbuysux.org. The employee testimonials are the most informative. FYI: the site's owner has all that First Amendment info because BB sued him a few years back.

* the same stores that stock more than just the crap music-of-the-week CDs and usually have knowledgeable employees that weren't just transferred from the appliance department (nothing personal to any BB music software employees reading this)

Blah, blah, blah. Okay, Kropotkin, nothing personal, but I've just about had it with the Adbusters/"Us and Them" view of the world. The big chains aren't putting anyone out of business. WE (unless you'd like to continue to sneer at American consumer culture) WE put them out of business because we choose to go to the big box and spend our money. That's where the responsibility lies. And WE don't mind becuase our 401ks are invested in the boxes. WE aren't a superior class. WE includes all of us: the consumers, the marketers and the lady that greets you at the door.

Most employees at BB are on it; they know their shit. Yes, the store works on margin to sell big ticket items. Smart business move. Fact is, if it weren't for these big box retailers, the majority of people (read: the masses which includes me) wouldn't have the chance to own digital cameras, laptops, etc. There goes the democritization of information. The well-to-do have less and less advantage in this sense.

Does it suck to work at BB? For some probably, yeah. But then again, it sucks to work anywhere you're not the boss and, hell for that matter, it sucks to work. "Supersize Me", "Wal*Mart: The High Cost of Low Price" and the rest of this Naomi Kline/"No Logo" bullshit is tired, one-sided, puritanical and elitist to the core. Give me suburbanite sex, Big Macs with the special sauce and the formaldehyde atmosphere of Sam's Club.

Yessirree, let's keep pushing capitalism hard as we can, no matter what kind of damage its does to other parts of a person's life - we must keep those shareholders & CEOs happy at all costs, eh? They are such a tiny minority of people in this country but IMO they have been allowed to wield way too much power over the rest of America's citizens.

As far as the "we" thing, yes you're technically correct but unfortunately most of those same people don't know what is really happening out there while they're shopping since most of the time the mass media news outlets don't tell them shit, except who won American Idol the night before or how cool the latest (and most probably useless) digital gadget is. And watching Fox News for accurate information is a hopeless cause.

"Ignorant people are easier to manipulate" is probably many corporations' favorite mantra these days. :(

For more info on this, watch The Corporation. (http://thecorporation.com/)

And the laptops would still be affordable without the giant bigbox stores - ever heard of the concept of "economy of scale"? It's the manufacturers who are the ones who set the initial prices, not the retailers. And those computers would be easier to afford if they weren't crammed with all kinds of major overkill features like 3gHz Pentiums and 200gb hard drive that practically no one at home ever uses - for crissake who needs that to read a news site or send an email? I easily did that back in '97 with a 400mHz Celeron, a 3gig drive & 56K dial-up.

And WE don't mind becuase our 401ks are invested in the boxes.Mine isn't.....because I would never work there. Nobody forced someone to work at BB. So guilt trips like that don't work on me.

And no, I won't be buying AIFST from Best Buy.

Well...it looks like this topic became very political.

You're referring to That's It That's All being on SGH. The Beasties have often put out special editions and limited releases. Although we've gotten no official word here, it appears that Best Buy will have some sort of bonus edition. My local BB would not take a preorder from me. First come, first served.

As far as the BBQ TV pilot...JamesB, the camera operator who did the shoutouts on the Pageant, changed his username to BBQ Champ around the time the Beasties were in Japan or Australia. Apparently there was some sort of BBQ competition that was held....I imagine the TV pilot is a goof. Kinda like the HN infomerical.

My point about WE is that WE are the shareholders and the CEOs or their neighbors, friends, bastard children, whatever. Does capitalism steamroll over everything else to increase profits? Yes and I don't like it, but so does the current response from the left. What exactly is it that we're going to do? Every system has it's, pardon the pun, price to pay for doing business in that way. Socialism, communism, anarchism -- you name their advantages and I'll name their weaknesses. I'm not married to capitalism, but then I can't and I haven't spoken with or read anyone with any real solutions. Or if they propose some grand idea, they don't have a map of how to get from where we are to there. We live in a different time; this is not Andy Griffith and Don Knotts isn't pumping my gas at the service station that sells the Goodhumor ice cream bars. There are fewer mom and pop shops, but prosperity is spreading.

Would I rather informative news (in addition to what's up with Brad and Angela)? Yes, but again, the businesses behind the media is serving up what the people want, not brainwashing them into it. They're a business they can't afford to produce news, sit-coms and the like that viewers are going to turn off. Some of US may not like it, but it's democracy in action. "Arrested Development" gets cancelled not because some evil CEO thinks that Americans should be further dumbed-down but because there aren't enough viewers.

As far as Fox News is concerned, if I'd been a Republican listening to CNN and, more radically, NPR/PBS' biased focus for years, I'd start my own "news" channel too. Critics say, "Yeah, but at the very least Fox could be up front that it's editorial not news." Yeah, so could NPR. And I say this as an NPR/PBS supporter. BTW, I saw "The Corporation", but by the time I did I cancelled my Adbusters subscription because it's all critique and no answers .

I agree about the hyper-processing power, but it's Quake gamers to blame here. Yes, I have heard of economies of scale, but it's the distribution chain the big boxes have worked out that have also significantly contributed to lower prices.

I say all this coming more from your point of view. I've spent the last five years after leaving advertising reading, watching, arguing against "them", but I'm starting to see some gray and I'm tired of being the elitist who thinks the masses are ignorant. (I came from middle-class suburbia. We are ignorant, but so is everyone else in one way or another.) Amidst all the hype from the left on the big screen and the droning about consumer culture and ignorant masses, there are some direct advantages that the "Fresh Air" audience misses (ignorance?) because they simply don't have to live that life. And also having spent way too long listening to preachers growing up, it's a secular version of puritanism. But this exchange is fun.:)

Real quick: Acamus, I'm a left leaning moderate myself (for example I have a fade with a 1.5 blade....but also have 3" sideburns) and definitely have problems with much of the junk the ultra-liberals are pushing at us.* I honestly don't have a problem with capitalism itself, but I definitely have problems with how so many in that particular career field have become so greedy and so selfish compared to even just a decade ago & use capitalism to justify ANYTHING just to make more money; and if someone complains about this, they're labeled "un-American". This kind of thinking is also what is helping to squeeze the artistry and originality out of much of the music the Big Four labels (http://arancidamoeba.com/mrr/) put out (the same labels that swallowed up the literally dozens of indpendents that used to exist).

BTW: Grape Nuts tastes better and is much easier to eat if you heat it up (with milk) in the microwave. :)

* particularly in the area of education (http://illinoisloop.org/selfesteem.html), my own career field (don't miss The Simpsons quotes at the bottom of that page); and a certain sports-related issue (http://www.thematforums.com/myforum/?show_topic=24547&forum_id=3). I like the haircut, sharp!

I agree with you on the labels. I wish there was more diversity too. Again I think it's just what the majority of people want. They want the kind of music that you and I pass on.

(Oh, I'm gonna go out on a limb on this one. My grape nuts are already bracing for the axe that's gonna chop 'em off and I don't necessarily mean by you, FunkyHIFI.) There are a few guys I know who used to run an awesome label that used to sign some fine artists, but their spoiled/upper-middle class/snowboarding/we-be-grillin'-cheese-and-flippin'-flapjack-selves found it to be "too much work", so they sold it. Now, as one of them said in an interview, they hang around Murray's Cheese Shop, Yoshi's muffin stand, the Scabble tourney, were still sleeping in when the towers fell (not saying they could do anything about it, but my ass was already at work for hours when we got the news), or just generally hanging out with friends. One of their moms buys and sells art valued in the tens of millions and, now retired, is into Renaissance works. (Oh dear, the good life.) I'm not going to name names 'cause, you know, I'm not like that. I guess it's more than most silver-spoons get done in a lifetime. My question is, ya'll ever feel guilty for bragging about doing nothing?

I wish Clear Channel and Rupert Murdoch didn't own the fuckin' moon. At least we got the internet (thanks Al) before all the media consolidation. I know most people get their info from TV/Radio (And that's not good for our democracy. End sufferage for vidiots! (kidding)), but for many of us, those outlets are obsolete. I don't own a TV and the only radio I have came with my car. I wish folks weren't so greedy too. Hey Ken Lay (oops, he died) didn't your mama teach you sharing is fun.

Hey, thanks for the Grape Nuts cooking tip. We're doin' all kinds of bad things talking politics and recepies in the general forum. Bad, bad, bad.

Hey, I'm a teacher too. We should exchange notes. I work at a progressive private school where I teach spoiled/upper-middle class/snowboarding/we-be-grillin'-cheese-and-flippin'-flapjack-kids. I used to teach public, but that was too much work for me.;)

Best Buy's online description (taken from All Music Guide):

The Beastie Boys let their fans do the shooting as they take the stage of Madison Square Garden for the final date of their "Challah at Your Boy" tour in a concert video that truly puts the viewer right in the middle of all the action.

Okay, I've heard the tour called a number of different incorrect names, but how the hell does AMG confuse one of their graphic T-shirts with the name of the concert? Weed?

As far as promotion goes, I've got to figure they're just bein' they punk-ass selves. In the ifilm interview Yauch emplores people not to watch the movie. In the press release for SGH he bills them as Capitol's "third best band". Conan's site doesn't list them performing but lists music acts for prior and future dates. Their interview on Terry Gross didn't play here in ATL because it was pledge week and the programming director at our local NPR station said that they played pre-recorded shows with content they felt was more appropriate for the NPR demographic instead of the live feed. Did the Fresh Air interview play anywhere else because isn't pledge drive week nationwide? On top of that there is no audio link on the AIFST Fresh Air page when there is for all her other interviews. Punks!:)

OK, so I just ran down to my local Best Buy (the one at the Waterfront, if any of you PGHers just absoutely had to know) and they definitely had more than 10 copies with the extra disk. The DVD doesn't have the reversible cover (n) and the disks themselves don't even have the f-bomb on it (n) (n) but the booklet sure does.

In a related note, 105.9's morning show interviewed the boys for about 10 minutes this morning, and it was at once funny and sad. Funny because it was the boys being the boys. Sad because the crappy DJs did not get it. They tried really hard to keep the interview on track, and made it pretty clear during and after the interview that they knew nothing of the Boys other than LTI. Eh, at least I got my copy. I wish I could rock the swear word, though.
