Whenever I turn on the TV, I flip to Nick-At-Nite or TV Land. That's all I watch--I've always been obsessed with the classic sitcoms. There are countless classics, so bare with me here. Vote for your favorite sitcom.

What do you mean by "classic?"

Sitcoms I think most worthy of consideration:

Blackadder
Reddwarf (Not the last two series, they were borderline unwatchable)
Married with Children

I messed this thread up. Nevermind. ;( And I meant, sitcoms dating back to the '70s-'90s.

My question, too, was define "classic" because when I was really young, classic was reruns of Lucy (blech) and then Bewitched (blech^2) and Jeannie (blech^3) and then it became Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley and there isn't enough blechness to describe those last two shows.

I don't like most sitcoms. I watched Seinfeld and Friends in the 90s and Curb in this decade and they'll be classics some day if the former two aren't already.

I gave AbFab a shot and didn't enjoy it although I see the occasional clip that's great. I like Flying Circus style of humor and The Office (the original version is better). Everything else: awful. Especially CBSesque like comedies like Raymond and King of Queens--there is absolutely nothing about those shows and shows like them that appeals to me.

I see what you both mean--one's experience of old shows is different from another. To clarify, I was asking what were some of your favorite sitcoms, growing up with, or currently watching now.

There was supposed to be a long poll to this, but I realized it was a bad idea to make it long, and before I knew it, it was too late, and the thread was already made. Eh, whatever.

Going back on topic, my most-watched sitcoms right now are Cheers, Murphy Brown, and Ted Danson's (he played Sam Malone in Cheers) recent sitcom, Becker, is pretty entertaining. He displays that typical charm that could be found in Cheers, except he's more vulgar and aggresive in this show.

I'm not prone to melancholy, but watching shows like ^^^ or any type of show from the past--I don't know--that is depressing.

For me, the exceptions to that are when I watch/ed reruns of various Star Trek series. With those shows, though they are reruns, that they take place in the relative future maybe negates/cancels out their rerunniness.

Miho Mingu
07-19-2006, 07:21 AM
Hmmm interesting. It's the complete opposite for me. Shows like Cheers, Murphy Brown, Full House, and Dick Van Dyke make me laugh and in good spirit, and I prefer those types of shows over most other shows on TV. Sometimes, there will be sitcoms that convey a deep message, which does make you think and even get you a little depressed, so on those occasions, I agree. Oh, one example would be All in the Family--full of depressing moments.

Anyway, as a sum, I firmly believe that today's sitcoms have deteriorated, and can hardly hold a candle to many of the shows that aired during the 1970s-early 90s.

YOu know, Will Smith really is the most popular guy on the planet I think. Or at least in Europe. Almost every country I've ever been to has had that show on, dubbed into the local language. It's kind of freaky. I've seen it in France, Italy, Spain, Holland, and the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Father Ted takes some beating.

The young ones, blackadder, One Foot in the grave.

The only american sitcoms ive seen worth shit are seinfield, frasier and cheers.

EDIT: Fresh prince too.

Miho Mingu
07-19-2006, 07:43 AM
Damn right. Frasier was a hit--well, it seemed more like a sleeper, but I guess no one gave it a chance, or knew about it, even. I always found it amusing to watch. Each episode was split into segments, and they'd title each major scene beforehand.

I don't know if I'd recognize any of the characters from it other than Will Smith.

About sitcoms from the past...I think I appreciate the humor in them and a lot of them really were groundbreaking, but something about snapping back in time like that--through TV--that is, I think, what I find to be depressing and I don't understand it. I just know it.

I can & do occasionally read fiction that's set in the past and I do watch some genres of old movies, but rerun TV, generally speaking, is sort of off-limits for me. Then again, so is most new TV too. I tend to Netflix documentaries and I watch 24 and The Sopranos as those shows air. And Stephen Colbert.

Not a sitcom. But brass eye is the most groundbreaking and brilliant comedy shows of all time. Some of the stuff i can't believe they showed on TV, but its brilliant that they did.

"this is a reanactment of a peadophile rape in victorian england, the little girl is played by an older model - as you can see her breasts are large and innacurate"

The first few years of Cheers used to seem like gold to me, but they're a little too sit-comy for me now.

I'd say The Simpsons and The Office (BBC) are as good as we've gotten. Arrested Development is up there. Soft spots for The Dick Van Dyke Show and I Love Lucy.

I can't get enough of the old shit. All I watch is M*A*S*H, All In The Family, Welcome Back Kotter, Good Times, you name it.

About six years ago they were running Chico and the Man on Nick at Nite. I would stay up to watch it even though I had to be at work around 7:30am. Only problem was that Chico and the Man came on at 4am!! I would be so fucking tired at work but I just couldn't stop watching it. It's not even really that good but I'm just addicted. I don't know why.

I like them. I kind of have a problem with Good Times, though, I still watch it. What I don't like about it is the fact that it pushed all the racial stereotypes and we're known for: broke, unemployed, loud, tacky clothes. That show is set in Cabrini Green. I've got friends that live in Cabrini Green. I've been robbed with a Tec-9 stuck in my face in Cabrini Green. I've been chased out of Cabrini Green with baseball bats. I've been thrown on the hood of I don't know how many cop cars in Cabrini Green. I've seen crackheads and heroin addicts shitting and pissing in the middle of the fucking stairwell in Cabrini Green. None of those are 'good times'.

I saw nothing good about the situation they were in on the show but it's still entertaining, never-the-less.

Oh, how could I forget--The Wonder Years. If there was ever a show that made you depressed, it would have to be this one. There were some episodes, where I couldn't help but feel sad for Kevin's parents, as I could relate them to my own, because they cared so much for their kids, that it hurt them when their kids wanted to be left alone. Both the mom and dad, I see my parents in them.

Winnie Cooper grew up to be a hottie!! I remember seeing her in some magazine interview about a year ago. She looks good. And she's got brains. She got a degree in Japanese mathematical engineering from MIT or some crazy ass shit like that. Girlie is mad smart.

I began watching BBC America about five or six years ago. I like it. Two British shows I can't get enough of are Eastenders and British Men Behaving Badly. Those two guys are absolutely fucking retarded.:D

^^^ I've seen her recently as well. She has always been a beautiful girl. I didn't know she went to MIT...that's good for her, as most child stars end up in the gutter, and today, create their own reality TV shows. (ie: Christopher Knight in My Fair Brady...such a dumb show)

Towel can mean being stupid--how and why was that ever concluded?

Growing Pains was one, yep. I liked watching that show when I was young. I never liked Family Matters that much. It was boring to watch most of the time.

B101 meantioned this earlier, but Small Wonder brought me back--I would watch that often when I was a kid. It was about a female android who was a little girl, that stayed with a family and performed as a maid for them. Her name was V.I.C.I. (pronounced as Vicky)
