Even though some of these bands' SST-era releases are now on a different label (Sonic Youth's old stuff is with Geffen; Dinosaur Jr with Merge Records; Meat Puppets with Rykodisc, etc.), SST has still gotta be one of the greatest indie record labels ever.
So yeah, vote for your favorites. Wait for the poll.

Anyways, all those bands are great but I went with Black Flag. There is such a visceral energy to them. I dare you to listen to "Damaged" without wanting to punch a mirror just like Henry Rollins did on the album's cover. ;)

I tried downloading some Black Flag today. They were too angry for me. I would have probably liked them during my more angsty-years in high school when I liked other angry music, but I'm too chill now to really listen to that.
Maybe once in a blue moon when I'm in a shit mood and need to punch a wall, but not for urryday listening.

It's actually a shame you didn't get into them during your high school days, because you liked some real shitty "angry" music back then (case in point... Godsmack). :p

Yup. Black Flag would have fit in nicely back then.

You don't put Black Flag and Godsmack together in one breath. NO!

I didn't. There was clearly a period after "yup." That's two breaths.

Hmmm... no love for Husker Du? Where's Documad with her belittling of this "local band"? ;)

I didn't belittle Husker Du. I was a fan in college. I don't understand why anyone in 2006 cares which of the guys in the band was gay, and I can't understand why anyone other than people who were there want to read about concerts at clubs in the early 1980s.
I was never a fan of true punk. I never thought Husker Du was punk or hardcore or whatever. I didn't start buying their albums until Zen Arcade. I had a lot of frustration with the indie press because every time they wrote about Husker Du, it was bemoaning whatever new thing they did and complaining that it wasn't son of land speed record. I happened to like some of the later stuff. I never thought land speed record was the second coming.
But mostly, to me, music circa 1980-85 wasn't about "important" records. It was about live shows. I was lucky to have a good venue and a thriving scene when I was young. I don't think that translates well to books and movies.
BTW -- I own a lot of SST records, but if you looked through my old vinyl, you would notice that they weren't played as often as my un-cool music. :p
EDIT: Oh. And I'm a complete hypocrit. I have read loads of books about bands that were before my own time. :D

Meh, Husker Du were a band that got better as they went along, so I'm surprised to hear devotion towards "Land Speed Record" over what they did after that. I thought "Land Speed Record" was pretty bad (very conventional by the numbers hardcore punk that lacked originality or distinctiveness), but with each record after that, they just got better and better and better, learning to fine-tune the hardcore with lots of melody and new concerns, etc.
