oh my god, i'm going through this right now. the new guy at work (i've nicknamed him Prince Cocksucker III) calls me Jess. if i wanted to be Jess, i'd have introduced myself as Jess. no. my name's Jessica. I used to not let anyone call me that. now i don't mind so much, but only my family and friends and boyfriend. i don't really respond to that, so he'll say "jess?" four times before i realize he's talking to me. ugh. i don't know of a polite way to say, listen, that's not my name. so i don't respond to it. and we're not buddies, and i'm not going to be nice to the guy that took my job.

:o
I tend to call people that I am not close with whatever they introduce themselves as. So if you introduce yourself to me as David, I will call you a-z.
What I don't like is when people give you their own nickname. Like my name is Raakay, prounounced 'Rockay'. So people call me Rock. But sometimes some motherfuckers will be like 'Rocko' or 'Rocky'. It irks me a bit.

What irks the hell out of me are people who are too gotdamned lazy to pronounce my name correctly and I have to repeatedly tell them how to say it, time after time after motherfucking time. It bugs me to no end.
My name is Kalief, pronounced ka-leef. It's unusual but it's not that fucking complicated. I find myself having to repeat my name four, five and sometimes six times because people just don't fucking listen. Then they either attempt to say my name by coming up with something similar everytime they say it (Coleco, Kalamazoo, Maleef,{these are actual names I've been called}) or they will assign me their own nickname that they can easily remember.
Fuck that. Take the time and put forth the effort to learn someone's name you lazy gotdamed idiot.
That's part of the reason I started going by Kal about five years ago. But can you actually believe I've had people say, after introducing myself, "I'm sorry did you say your name was Cow?"
"Yeah, my name is Cow, you fucking moron. Moooooooo."

People routinely shorten my real first name to one syllable. And there are some people who shorten it to one syllable and then add an "ie" suffix.
Which if you know my real name makes that a sort of comical name and kind of funny that they do that and assume that kind of familiarity.
There's one guy at my gym who does that with the "ie" and I smile when he does because he says it in this mighty cute way and then he looks sideways at me to check my reaction and he does that also in a cute way, like he absolutely knows that he's being flirtatious and mischievous and that's okay.

this kinda thing bothers me to no end.
i'll go to the jail and introduce myself to them for the first time, and at least half the time, this is how it goes:
me: hi, i'm Beth X and I'm your attorney on your case.
them: i just got a letter and my attorney's name is Elizabeth X so you aren't my attorney.
me: my name is Elizabeth, however, I go by Beth and prefer to be called Beth instead of Elizabeth.
then i go through their case, and i'm leaving, and i tell them it was nice meeting them and they say "thanks Liz."

it irritates me when people get irritated by people using the shortened version of their name. no one likes using multi syllabic names. seems kind of arrogant to want to be called johnathan rather than john.
true nicknames, on the other hand, are different. true nicknames are usually given by people that care about you so a stranger using a true nickname i can see being irritating.

Some people call me Diama if they're close to me, and that's okay. It's something most people wouldn't think up on their own so it's more of an "insider" nickname.
However, my one friend started calling me "Dee" which REALLY pisses me off. I hate being called Dee by her, just because of how she says it. "Hey, Dee, get me this." My friends all mock her and say "Yo, Dee," because they know it pisses me off.
I'm okay when people call me Di, but yet again, only if they know me. Most people love to call me DianE, which is NOT my fucking name. I am DI-AN-A. A! NOT E! DIANE IS AN OLD LADY NAME. DIANA IS A HOT CHARITABLE PRINCESS NAME. GET IT RIGHT.
Um, so yeah. Nicknames if you know me.

yeah. i don't like that whole passing down family names.
it's fine if the grandparent that you were named after has long been dead--now, getting named after your mom or dad is stupid. that's a prideful parent, or egotistical.
I generally mind what people call me (well, as long as it's not an insult.) My name is Alex, but I get called Lex, Alexei, Lexio, Al...But it pisses me off when my boss calls me Alec. Alec is an old man's name, and it's not mine. And my name isn't Alexander, ever.
my full name is alexander, and heh yeah, i get called lex, lexei, and alexei by relatives. i'm curious, the people that call you all those versions of alex--what ethnicity are they?
My name is Kalief, pronounced ka-leef.
that's an interesting name. what ethnicity are you ? if you don't mind me asking.
also, i don't mind when people call me just alex. alexander is too long to say all the time, anyway. i don't blame them.

I always introduce myself by the unshortened version of my first name. Most eveyone I know that has my first name is called the shortened version.
I used to really get bothered when people shortened it. Then I realized that my friends and family are what matter, to me. I could care less if some stranger wants to get familiar by shortening my name. My people I know and care about call my by the unshortened version of my first name -- or some clever nickname.
If someone asks if I mind if they call me by the shortened version of my first name, I usually reply, "I don't but my mother will," and smile.

i get those too. and my grandma likes to call me alek, or aleksandrachka when things get extreme. and like you also mentioned; i don't mind when people call me just alex. i wouldn't mind if everyone did.
but, i always introduce myself as alexandra. except this one time to a guy on the net (i said alex). after x weeks of talking he all of sudden asks if i have a girlfriend, and i answer that i prefer guys, and he goes "wtf, you're gay?" lol, he thought i was a guy. so i've learned to *always* introduce myself as alexandra. :p
