Anyone here into Zappa?
Because I need some advice on album(s).
I decided to check out his dicography one day and I found over 70 released albums! I already have Overnite Sensation, Hot Rats, Burnt Weeny Sandwich and that live cd Sheik Yerbouti.
I get my paycheck on tuesday and Im gonna spend most of it on music,
so if you have any suggestions i'd love to hear them!

All I know of Frank Zappa is his "Strictly Commercial" album which compiles his more accessible material.
I really enjoyed that, so I'm curious to try more. But goddamn, too many damn albums to choose from. Who knows where to start?

I have a friend who worships Zappa as the greatest musician of all time.
I have known people who liked him a lot. I don't get it.
I understand that he was helpful to a lot of young musicians over the years.

I liked him as a dude, but never heard any of his music. He had good ideas in his head thought. Smart man.

You probably should go for Apostrophe (') which was recorded nearly at the same time as Overnite Sensation or One Size Fits All.

I love the weird stuff from Weasels ripped my flesh, Dwarf Nebula etc.
But his storytelling ability was awesome. Best Zappa is his german song.

Zappa has some stuff that's pretty far out there... but I enjoy it. That album with Dinah Moe Humm (I can't think of the name right now...) is one of my favorites that I've heard, but I haven't heard all of his stuff either... O wamt tp say it's called Discreet or something like that. Scope it out.

Apostrophe and One size fits all, Ill be sure to check em out.
"Dinah-Moe Humm" is on Overnite Sensation.
Awesome song but it creeps me out a bit. Montana is awesome, but then again i like every song on that album.

I'm not really that familiar with any Calypso or Celtic Gospel music.
And I don't actually own Weasels Ripped My Flesh. But I do remember liking it.
There. I hope you're happy. I'm a fraud. Happy now?

Ooh, I have some original Harry Belafonte LPs. (Is that Calypso?) They were my dad's so it doesn't count. :(

He's the King of Calypso. That's the extent of my Calypso knowledge.
I have one of his x-mas albums. That's the extent of my Calypso collection.

I am very nuetral on Zappa until it comes to the very early stuff. Compared to much of the music considered "Classic" from that era, The Mothers of Invention just about blew every other band away.
But their recognition factor stayed below the bar, because even in the Age of Aquarius the Mothers of Invention were one step ahead.

I was able to follow Zappa at a young age. I feel that he had something in his music for every open mind. He was tactful.

On the really really, Zappa's music and message helped me broaden my horizons.
If you got a couple mins, I highly recommend this episode of CNN's Crossfire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F272-2A2FDo&search=zappa). (lb)

if you like zappa listen to captain beefheart. It's a little less accessible (a lot of it is incromprehensible noise) but it has good parts. Zappa and beefheart used to be good friends

I've always liked Captain Beefheart, but never gotten into Zappa. Here everybody only knows Bobby Brown (without realising what he's singing about in it...), but I remember a veeeery long time ago some punks were raving about Sheik Yerbouti. I've been most interested in Ship Arriving Too Late To Save A Drowning Witch because I know the story behind the cover, but I still haven't heard it.

I was listening to Zappa at a young age. And the first albums I was listening to by him by were Sheik Yerbouti, Apostrophe, and Overnite Sensation.
In retrospect, I'm glad that these were the albums that introduced me to Zappa's work. They're palatable and intricate projects. So, while there are many catchy songs on those albums, my mind was opened to a whole new way of appreciating diversification in music.
It was a whole new ball game when I discovered my dad's record collection. He had a lot more experimental works of Zappa, among many other artists.
All in all, I recommend Sheik Yerbouti to new listeners because it encompasses a wide perspective of Frank Zappa's talent. But you don't have to take my word for it. Deh-neh-neer! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHinzCLP4xA)

Well this is encouraging, my first exposure to a collection of beastie boys fans also reveals a stash of Zappa fans! Personally, i go for Lumpy Gravy, its an engrossing two tracks and certainly passes the time whilst completing major art works.

There used to be a great, SNL performance of The Meek Shall Inherit Nothing on Youboob. Of course it got yanked.

i was apalled when i first bought lumpy gravy. was expecting something more musical. i guess i've come around enough to appreciate it for what it is, though i still don't find myself listening to it very often.
I'm more of a fan of "Hot Rats".
Best Zappa is his german song.
