Since Steely Dan, i.e. the duo of Donald Fagen & Walter Becker, is a band I thought this would fit better in this forum than General Beasties

Talk about a iron hand in a velvet glove - Owen might want to consult a lawyer about this FAST.

Here's the album (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004GOXS/sr=1-1/qid=1153689977/ref=sr_1_1/104-1139057-9663969?ie=UTF8&s=music) with the track "Cousin Dupree" that the letter is talking about. I used to own it in dvd-audio form - IIRC the song is partly about a guy that's got the hots for one of his cousins (ewwwww  ). This best of (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000002P4R/ref=m_art_li_1/104-1139057-9663969?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=5174) album should help people recognise who Steely Dan is.

BTW: I can't cut and paste anything because the letter (intentionally?) is a .jpg scan of the actual letter.

Are you going to post the letter then? Otherwise this is the worst thread ever.

Thanks brode-meister, that was a pretty cool letter. I can just imagine Luke Wilson's gormless face flapping open and closed as he struggles to understand the barrage of insults being thrown at him. Good stuff. (y)

Wow. That has to be a spoof, but it's on their website. I'm so confused.

I didn't know they were talking muchless touring.

I can't believe that they would write a letter -- even a tongue in cheek one -- where they describe themselves as the band that won a grammy for ricki don't lose that number. How sad are they?

Maybe the whole website is a spoof?

P.S. I listened to My Old School yesterday.

sorry about forgetting to post the link to the letter - it looked like it was about to storm (again!), I needed to do my daily run so I was typing really fast. :o

I guess it could be a spoof because if you're familiar with Fagen & Becker you know they have a quirky sense of humor (part of the reason I like a lot of their music), and because of that veiled threat(?) concerning the Russian bodyguard(?).

But informal things like this are also used to avoid messy, expensive & time consuming court battles.............

the embarassing part is from what I gather, there is almost no similarity whatsoever between the song and the movie aside from "Dupree". They must be really reaching for publicity.

It's so sad. They've had such a low profile for so long, I can't believe they would want the publicity, but then I can't believe they're touring either. I've always had conflicted feelings about them though. They put out a couple of good records as well as some of the worst radio hits of my childhood.

And now they actually have me feeling a little sorry for Owen Wilson. :o

Did they really think it was funny? I'd appreciate any explanation anyone can offer.
Funky HiFi -- I don't think it's funny. Maybe if I KNEW FOR SURE that they hate ricki don't lose that number as much as I do.

Its about a step and a half away from gloating about how they still have fans and still get laid, albeit their tours consist of casinos and state fairs.

Any musician who would need to point out song titles and the reasons they are successful rather than letting their catalogue speak for itself are probably on the path of the casino tour descent.
