Although the name 'Intelligent Dance Music' sounds far to stuck up, I am quite interested by it. I never got much further than Autechre, Jamie Lidell and Adult. though, so I hoped you lot could help me out a little. What's good IDM? I want something that isn't too 'soft'. I like things that go bleep and have a good pounding bass.
And when is something concidered IDM anyway? When is something stupid dance music? Musicgeeks help me out!
I dunno, I've seen Aphex Twin and Squarepusher labeled as IDM...weird techno. Boards of Canada is the only band labeled as such that I've really gotten into.
I think it's a misnomer. Spacey music that you can listen to in a coffeeshop until you forget your first name.

Postal Service counts as IDM, right?

Just about anything that came out on these labels was called IDM. Rephlex (Aphex Twin's label he co-owns/run) took it a step further and called it Braindance (http://www.discogs.com/image/R-150-4073-001.jpg) just to take the piss.
I think the labels are idiotic but how else can you look it up online? Either way, I'm into the shit.

Yeah I knew about the warp label, but there's such a list of 'bands' I don't know where to start. Ooh, I just see that Battles are on warp too. I've seen them live and they're awesome, but I didn't think they qualified as IDM.
edit: Maximo Park are on warp too? wtf?! That's not dance music. They don't even go *bleep*!
Yeah I was too tired to make a list... but here I go!
Super Collider had Jamie Lidell in it. Er, you probably know 'em.
Kiki
The Knife
you probably already heard the AFX (APhex Twin) Analord series but it's word a mention.
Er, Caribou... formerly Manitoba.
Oh yeah Venetian Snares and stuff off of the planet-mu (http://www.planet-mu.com/) label. They have tons of samples.
Drexciya is electro themed 4/4 stuff but it's amazing.
I'm at a loss... that should be enough to chew on for a while.
