this hasn't been discussed much, so let's start--it can be any composer in the world. mine is yoko kanno, she is japanese, and has composed many anime soundtracks, some video game soundtracks, and some TV/drama soundtracks.
the appealing aspect of her style is using a variety of genres on soundtracks, as well as inviting all walks of life to sing and otherwise perform instruments on her tracks. for instance, she likes to use steve conte, ilaria graziano, maaya sakamoto, and emily curtis.
i like a lot of japanese composers, and rarely do i find a non-japanese composer that i enjoy. runner-ups are yuki kajiura, yasunori mitsuda, keiichi suzuki/hirokazu tanaka, (i think of them as one composer, as they are best known for the music in the mother series) daisuke ishiwatari, and hideki naganuma.
who is your favorite, and some of your runner-ups if you'd like ?

That would be Koji Kondo. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koji_Kondo) He composed most, if not all, Super Mario Bros. games.

I never heard of that guy, but he sounds passionate.
More votes for Duke Ellington and Dvorak, and extra votes for Bellini and Coltrane.

He's pretty underrated. The ninth symphony gets all the props, but the fourth, seventh, and eighth are terrific, too.
The cello concerto, his trios, and the American quintet are tops, too.(y)

I've heard some Reich I really liked. (y)
For days now, I've had the gnawing feeling because I forgot to list Edvard Grieg. I figured: too bad, too late, but it won't stop hounding me. So:
Edvard Grieg. :D
The man wrote tons of songs that get too little attention. The whole Autumn folio, "I Love Thee, Dear." My God. If I could get accompanyment and sing "I Love Thee, Dear" to the woman of my dreams, her knees would go weak.
