View Full Version : Have the Beasties lost the midas touch?

Don't get the wrong impression, I think these guys are up there with the Beatles and Elvis, their all time greats, they inspired me to DJ records. But the schtick has become a little exhausted and rehashed. The boys are reminding me of Muhammad Ali in the last years of his career, a great who doesn't have the speed or power he once had, a former champion who doesn't have the same magic anymore. I hope these guys keep keepn' on like the Stones, TT5B's was still better then any hip hop album besides Kanye's. I want to see these guys rally and pull a George Foreman, regaining the heavyweight belt again! Because they can't, they won't and they don't stop!

You think TT5B's was critically better then College Dropout?

Yes, Kanye hasn't offered me anything new and different.

Kanye had better production and was more poetic IMO, but at least the Beasties are less braggadocious then West's conceited ass...

For me, it's a matter of pushing the creative envelope and making people think like Tupac. It seems like we, as an American society at least, so easily forgot the potential of music, let alone hip-hop music.
Now if Kanye made one of those whiney-ass, played-out, increased pitch sample beats for Beastie Boys, maybe we would see that Foreman comeback. ;)
At Meinekee, you won't pay a lot for a muffler. I guarantee it.

Kanye charges too much for his beats, the boys need to dust off their old drum machines. Is Carrot Top on the juice? wtf

But the schtick has become a little exhausted and rehashed.[/B]Are you referring to their interview style--their bantering--or their performances on stage?
Each time I see them, I think about how it still seems fresh and spirited to them, how they still seem to enjoy one another's company. I get the sense that they'd hang out together even if they weren't who they are.

All of the above...the check it out vid was a rehashing of sabatoge, they didn't reinvent the musical wheel on these last two albums, the more recent television performances have been uninspiring...they don't seem like the same guys that cut Pauls Boutique, Check Your Head and Ill Communication...

I think TT5B lacked that extra layer of polish that can be found on most of the other stuff they released. It was admittedly a rush job to get it out before the elections. They basically made beats on their computers and rhymed over them. The next album will probably be more robust.
Don't get me wrong though, TT5B is great and I actually listen to it quite regularly. PB, CYH, IC, and HN are all better though. LTI is on par.

they never had it, or at least fronted like they did. the reviews for most of their albums are pretty good, if you look around ( a lot), but not amazing. i think this midas touch is just a media generated opinion that filtered through to some mad impressionable fans, and it's what we have now. them being cultural icons, to musical gurus, doesn't come from normal fans, it starts with the media. my favourite thing about them is they just themselves, with or without the supposed 'midas touch'.

the musical portions of the scoop, some of finger lickin good, and negotiation limerick file are mario c's work. what would his return do for the beats? i feel you tho, i think his return would be interesting.
ultimately if you didn't like five boroughs, you could only blame the Beastie boys.

The rhymes in To The Five Boroughs were ten kinds of nasty. The Beats were just kinda choppy and not that great.

so you gotta think precisely how much differance mario c could make.

They did rhyme the rhyme well, but TT5B could have been called some old BS part II...hopefully these funky jews and that zanny DJ from Frisco can make some magic on the next project...oh word...

man, why are you thinking about the beastie boys "losing their touch" instead of the whole picture and just everything they've done? let them do what they want and leave it alone
and in my opinion, as well as a lot of others, they've still got it
bboys keep it on and on.... (y)

I don't get the whole media thing. I don't give a fuck what the media says, I listen to what I like. The Beastie Boys are my favourite band, the only competition they have is The Clash and Rage Against the Machine and I don't listen to them nearly as much. I hate some stuff that critics and the public love. Like U2.

I've made comments to this effect elsewhere, so I want to make myself clear. I'm not saying that they set out to be taste makers or arbiters of cool, they definately just did what they liked, but the outcome has been an impact on music (think rapcore), hip hop (instumentals) and fashion (it happens everytime they're in the limelight) and law (Adock has said "sampling" is a term that came about from their first lawsuit) -- albeit unintended. Many times they were not the first to do what they did, but they did bring it to mainstream attention. Having said that, it's not an excuse to build up expectations that when a new album is dropped, if it doesn't accomplish some world-changing event that they are a failure. They can never be a failure since they are measured by their own desire to do what they want and it appears they've always done so.

I wouldn't mind seeing the Neptunes and the Boys gettn' high in the studio together. (But Pharrell doesn't do drugs) Does anyone recall Pharrell and Mike D chilln' together on the website about four-five years ago? It's back when Pharrell had no name and was sportn' fu manchus and trucker hats...lol

If they just recruited a bunch of producers there could be an album out within a year. The thing is they like making music. Not just MCing, making music.

you mean that unkle joint?
i think they can do what they want and continue to do so. if i wanted to hear anything, it would be merging the many styles of production they've mastered, analog, reel-to-reel, 808's, sp1200s, laptops. space age boom bap.

This is priceless. Like 40 is when you've got to start doing farina and talking hip replacement and high-dosing geritol. You don't even get an AARP card until you're what...50? :)
If Yauch sometimes appears to be [relatively] subdued on stage, I think it's unrelated to his age.

I would do that as well--watch a side of people and a level of freneticism that you don't often see elsewhere.

Even the most ferocious lions mellow with age. It's like the difference between driving and walking; you see different things at different paces. Always remember Bueller's advice: "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it." Sound trite, but it's true. I heard that so much when I was younger and never got it, but it's coming clear now.
