And I'm going Sunday night. The Heartbreakers are the best rock 'n roll band playing the states this year, IMHO.

Oh Well (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mc4zovPY7-A&search=tom%20petty)

This is not going to be his last tour as rumor has it,

"There's rumor that I'm not going to tour anymore," he says. "I don't think that's true, but I'd like to take a long break. I have recording projects I want to do, and that's going to last longer than the shows. I love playing, but it eats up so much of your life.

"I'm really conscious of wasting time. It's funny when you realize there are time limits. I'm impatient now with anything that gets in the way of what I want to do. I want to get everything down. Why would I want to do anything else? Rock 'n' roll is such a good job."

from the horses mouth in the USAToday (http://www.usatoday.com/life/music/news/2006-07-24-petty-main_x.htm), yesterday.

Has anybody seen him live before? Does anybody care?

Went to the Tom Petty show I purchased tickets for last nite. I think Tom was pretty loaded, drunked up and bonged out. Which is cool, he was primed and in a loosey goosey mood and the band was flatout fucking magnificent.

Stevie Nicks joined in on "Stopped Dragging My Heart Around" and sang "I Need to Know", Tom & Stevie did a beautiful duet on the old song "Insider" plus she did back-up vocals on a half a dozen other songs. Having Stevie there was amazing in itself. Eddie Vedder came out and sang "The Waiting" and joined in on the encore of "American Girl". Eddie was red hot.

Of the many highlights of last nights show (the crowd of 20,000 was up on it's feet the whole show) I would have to say the slowed way down acoustic version "sing-along" of "Free Fallin' reached a spiritual plane.

Does anybody care?

....how do the new songs sound?

Tom Petty is pretty much Mr. Reliable. So talented that you can actually forget how incredibly ugly he is. :D

I remember when Damn the Torpedoes came out, listening to it at my oldest brother's friend's place while they rolled joints. I was totally blown away and asked Brian, "How do you hear about this stuff?" 'Cause I was, what? 12? My crowd wasn't exactly hip on that stuff.

They were in town yesterday, and I had initially planned to go as I heard the whole "last tour" rumour. But now it looks like it's not....so I'll catch them next time around. Amazing band though...

They already lost Howie... we probably shouldn't wait. :(

I heard it was a good show. I should have gone. I thought about it but didn't end up doing anything about it.

Woulda liked to see him perform with Stevie and Eddie.

I totally care.

my parents went to that Auburn gig, and they said Stevie Nicks was good, but Eddie Vedder sucked ass as he didnt remember the words.

Well she was an american girl
Raised on promises
She couldnt help thinkin that there
Was a little more to life

Eddie messed up that phrase at the beginning of the song, then said outloud, "I really fucked that up", Tom laughed as did everyone else and the show went on flawlessly.

Mom & Dad must not like Eddie Vedder very much, because he more than made up for it with an over the top performance. Believe me, it will go down as one of the legendary 2006 shows in the NW.

Sometimes everything works. Even the losers get lucky.

I did see alot of old folks there that looked married and stuff.

Not that anyone cares.

I'm kinda surprised Petty would trot out Eddie Vedder. It's kind of like Sprinsteen having Jon Bon Jovi onstage.

Sure -- maybe in New Jersey, just for the gentlemanliness of it.

Fuck you. Seeing Stevie Nicks and TP together would have made my life complete. And you got three good songs instead of some other nonsense.

I've seen TP plenty. In June, I saw him when Pearl Jam opened for him. Eddie joined in on The Waiting but the mic wasn't working. I've never seen him sing with Stevie. Fuck you, you lucky bastard.

A to Z -- Eddie has been really vocal about being a TP and the Heartbreakers fan. Most of Eddie's contemporaries pretend to be too cool about acts like them. When Eddie did American Girl with the Heartbreakers and Mike Campbell did the solo, Eddie slid across the stage on his knees and did the "we're not worthy" arm movement. One of my favorite things about Eddie is that he is honest about the acts that he liked as a teenager.

And I never saw the original thread or I would have cared plenty.

And during the ENTIRE CONCERT in June, my friend kept asking for Tom to sing Stop Draggin My Heart Around and I told her he would never do that song. I don't know if I can tell her about this.
