A $1-billion (U.S.) loss certainly isn't pretty, but Wal-Mart Stores Inc. jettisoned a business that was draining cash and distracting management when it agreed to sell its German stores to rival Metro AG, analysts said yesterday.

The announcement that Wal-Mart is selling its 85 German stores and incurring a $1-billion pretax loss marked the second time in as many months that the world's biggest retailer said it was packing up and leaving an underperforming market. In late May, Wal-Mart agreed to sell its South Korean stores.

I needed a power cord yesterday, and I was right next to Wal-Mart, but I decided to walk my lazy American ass another quarter mile to the Target. I felt productive.

I was kind of looking around on search engines trying to find out how many stores Wal-Mart currently has, it always ends up the same thing....I'm reading more about Wal-Marts business pattern and getting more pissed by the minute.

Anyway they have over 3,700 stores in America, and over 5,000 worldwide.

I haven't stepped foot inside a Wal-Mart for years. I absolutely refuse to. I live within 5 miles from a 24 hour Super Wal-Mart and they just built another one about 6 miles the other direction. They have been trying to build a Wal-Mart 6 miles in the other direction for the past year, but it's been running into political and community opposition.

Of course the one thats being held up is in the most highly affluent nieghborhood. The other two are in medium to low wage areas. It's a fucked up situation. An economic disease.

I never ever ever ever will give them a penny of my money. Wal-Mart can kiss my USA ass! Fuck 'em.

even with as many people who are completely against wal-mart, there has to be at least as many people who thrive off of it. at least in this country...

Most things you buy come from some kind of corporation, there's no point boycotting just one.

My guess is they're leaving Germany because the union is too strong. I was not surprised, but quite saddened, by the Walmart movie.

Supporting all business is not bad, but it's true that most corporations suck. Target's better than Walmart since at least the people who work there can afford healthcare and live above the poverty line.

Speaking of CD's, Wal-Mart sells only edited CD's, yet sells rated R movies. Fucking hypocrites.

Plus, the "edited" word on the CD sticker is microscopic, as if to trick the customer.

In all fairness I’ve been to Wal-Marts in both South Korea and in Germany. I’ll just say that they are Wal-Mart in name only. Once you go inside it’s pretty much the same as the local retail stores. I’ve been disappointed each time. Not sure what this has to do with anything but I felt it had to be said.

There is if you don't agree with that particular corporation's business and employment practices.

I wish there weren't any anywhere. I have a serious problem with a huge multi-national that refuses to let it's employees form a union and stand up for themselves. That is absolutely scary. I mean think about it.

This is what I hear when I hear the word 'Wal-Mart':

Hi. We are Wal-Mart and here's what we're gonna do. We're gonna come into your small town and completely destroy all competetion. You know that little mom and pop store that's been in the very same spot since 1948? The one you've been going to since you were old enough to walk? Yeah, that's the one. Well.....THEY'RE GOING DOWN!!! And since we're gonna be the biggest show in your little hick town you'll probably wind up working for us and that's just great as far as we're concerned. We are gonna work the hell out of you day and night, we aren't gonna pay you jack-shit, if you try to form any type of union or engage any sort of representation you will be fired immediately and after you've given us about twenty to twenty-five years of your life and are on the verge of wrapping it up, we're gonna find some bullshit reason to let you go so we won't have to pay you shit upon your glorious retirement.

That's the Wal-Mart way. Welcome to the Wal-Mart family.:)

MOTHERFUCK WAL-MART!!

Actually, it's true.

Wal-Mart, being the geniuses they are, pretty much edit the cd's for profanity only, not content. You can go pick up Licensed To Ill, unedited as there isn't a whole lot of profanity on that album, just content.

I bought my first Outkast CD there 5 years ago, without knowing about the edited shit. Never bought another cd there again...
