When I was first learning, it helped me to play church songs because the arrangements are usually fairly simple and I knew the pieces already. You can go to a church and ask them to borrow or buy one of their hymn books because those usually have VERY simple notation in the back. That I already knew the base melodies helped me to sort of feel the songs out and that made it easier to make the leap into more difficult arrangements.

But those church songs are only going to impress old church-going blue-haired red-hat-wearing ladies. The Charlie Brown theme music is what'll impress their granddaughters and you can find fairly simplified versions of even the most complex of those pieces in the music sections at Barnes and Noble or Borders.

you'll have to elaborate on the felix cat food one, but I gotta say, probably not exactly the type of lady i'm hoping to make swoon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EDCFI9hB0g&search=catfood)

Thanks enree, but to be honest church songs are pretty much the furthest away from what I want to learn that you can get ;)

Charlie Brown music I can't say I know so I'll check it out

ps I can now play the first 4 bars of piano man :D :p But I'm still open to fresh ideas

Venus De Milo by Prince.

*it's not easy to play.
*it's a slow instrumental with a melancholic feel to it.
*you learn to play this and they will do whatever you want.

Piano was my first instrument. I started on a Casio keyboard and I still play just a little but it's been years.

The first song I learned to play was Axel F but there's no lyrics. I'd suggest learning some older Stevie Wonder from the 70's but, it's not the easiest to start with.

"Fur Elise" (y)

Might as well go with a classic.

Fur Elise is easy and it's usually the first thing you learn if you take lessons so blah.

When I first learned it, I played the base as a chord v. an arpeggio :o and that changed things up and in the wrong way but made it easier for my dumb left hand.

I have an upright piano next to a west-facing bay window and my cat sits tall and still next to me on the bench or sometimes on the top lid and at certain times of the day, the silhouette of me, him, and the upright is so great.

Some good suggestions here, cheers (y)

Fur Elise is actually the first song I started learning. It's ok. I can't get it to make that little bleeping sound when the barrels come down yet though (vague futurama reference for the uber-dorks :D)
