View Full Version : does irritable bowel syndrome go away on its own?
i think i might have that, but i don't really wanna see a doctor, he'll just find something wrong with me.
if that is what i have, this kinda sucks quite honestly, i was doing quite alright without it

no, it doesn't. it will just get worse and worse.
i'm in the club too.
seeing a doctor is the best thing you can do you for your life....
they're are TONS of treatments out there...
i shied away from doctors for year and years and years before finally going a few months ago.
sometimes just a diet change can help....or simply anxiety meds.
the treatments are simple and effective....
i've always been kind of nervous about my digestive...goings on, like i'd never eat mexican food before going somewhere where i'd be far away from a familiar bathroom, things like that, but on saturday something happened and it's just been horrible. every time i eat, i'm sent running to the bathroom every 15-20 minutes for about the next 2 hours. i don't wanna get too graphic about what goes on, but if i DO have IBS then i guess i don't need to tell you. i even threw up once. just once, and just a little, it was bizarre, and so unexpected.
i had a fever on saturday and sunday, it's gone now but the other symptoms persist. i haven't narrowed the reactions down to any particular foods yet, it seems to happen no matter what i eat. sometimes it's really awful, too, it feels like someone's reaching into my gut and squeezing my intestines. not every time, but often enough to suck pretty bad.
i dunno, it's only been 3 days, i'm still not convinced that i have it yet. i read the wiki entry on it, and it sounds pretty accurate, but i'm no doctor, and i'd hate to be a hypochondriac about it. i'm gonna give it a few more days and see if whatever i have goes away on its own, and if it doesn't i'll see a doctor because holy shit this sucks, i don't see myself making it through law school like this. there wouldn't be enough time in the day to do my reading on account of the new bathroom habits.
i'll keep you guys posted on a movement by movement basis.

if a fever or general sickness came with this...then it may be something all together differant...there are alot of digestive conditions out there....look up crohn's (or talk to cosmo/boomin)....
but i'd wait and see if the fever goes away first...perhaps it's just a flu thing.
but i gotta be honest....the fact that you have a fever AND those symptoms make me think you could have something alot more serious then IBS...a blockage or something to that effect.
you really need to see a doctor.
the other history you gave, though....about having to plan what you eat and make plans around if a bathroom will be close by, definately sounds like IBS or a digestive issue in the least. anytime your start planning your social life (even in mild ways) around you digestive issues means you probably have an actual condition.
how long has that been going on?
IBS doesn't just come out of nowhere really....the symptoms tend to build up over time....like YEARS...

Yeah, my mom has ulcerative colitis. She had adult onset, which is rare, most of the time it appears in people a little younger than you.
I'm not sure about the fever, but it sounds to me like a doctor should be in your near future either way.
Bob Is A Filthy Poop Butt!!!
i've been nervous about my digestion ever since the SAT incident, that would be i guess 4-5 years ago now. but that's not necessarily an IBS thing, that could have been an instance of extremely bad timing. it was a single event that's made me nervous ever since, because it really sucked, a lot.
the fever's gone now, i'm back to normal in all respects other than digestion. i woke up feeling absolutely fine today, until i ate something, that is. no nausea or headaches or anything like that though.
i looked up crohn's on wikipedia too, i guess it sounds kinda similar to what i have too, but i'm reluctant to think that it's that. that sounds like it's a fair bit more serious than what i've got right now. there was one thing that the article said that made me nervous though, it was something to the effect of "crohn's patients report that they feel their best when they don't eat anything", which is exactly where i'm at right now. i feel completely fine as long as there's nothing in my stomach. aside from feeling hungry, that is. guess i should go dig out my health insurance card.

get tested for wheat allergies. trust me.
and try giving up dairy for a few days. see if it improves.
ok, after reading everything you've said...get your ass to a goddamn GI doctor. asap.

yeah, at this point it could be lots of things.
which is why you should see a doctor, man.
Edit: On a related topic, why is it that men won't go to the doctor?
it actually did go away on its own, oddly enough. i thought for sure i had something. now i feel completely 100% normal, i'm back on dairy and bread and everything. maybe it was something i ate? but from what i read about IBS, it sure as hell felt like it.
i dunno, if it comes back, i'll see a doctor. maybe it was just a weird bug.
and i know this is kinda selfish, but i think i'll be making a donation to that crohn's walk now. it's kinda like in a christmas carol, where scrooge can't be bothered to get off his ass about it until he sees it firsthand. i can only imagine what a crohn's sufferer must go through. that shit sucked, no pun intended.

hahaha. hey, i'll take what i can get.
seriously though, you might want to get checked out. it very well could have been just some food poisoning or something...usually when it's a chronic condition, though, it'll go on for an extended period of time.

doctors charge co-pays and shit. I would have to have a hole in my stomach before I would go see an internist or some specialized doctor. $50? psssht!
