Police Report Confirms Gibson's Tirade
Jul 31, 4:46 PM EST

The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES -- An official police report on Mel Gibson's arrest on drunken driving charges substantiates claims that he made anti-Semitic remarks and threatened a deputy, a law enforcement official said Monday.

Meanwhile, Gibson's publicist confirmed to the Associated Press that the actor is participating in an ongoing program to deal with his alcoholism.

On Monday, Sheriff's Department officials sent prosecutors their case, which also says a tequila bottle was found in Gibson's car when he was pulled over on the Pacific Coast Highway.

Gibson had released a lengthy statement Saturday apologizing for saying "despicable" things to sheriff's deputies when he was arrested, but he did not elaborate. The entertainment Web site TMZ.com had reported that the sheriff's department was considering eliminating the anti-Semitic remarks from its official report.

The report forwarded to prosecutors cites Gibson as making disparaging comments about Jews, according to the law enforcement official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

The district attorney's office confirmed prosecutors had received the case and it was under review. A tentative arraignment date was set for Sept. 28.

A sheriff's spokesman Monday defended the department's handling of the case.

"In that case file will be (Gibson's) statement, will be our report, will be everything pertinent to his blood-alcohol level. We have done our job," sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore told reporters Monday at department headquarters. "We hope we've done it with not only professionalism and intelligence, but held to the highest standard of legal and moral imperative."

The Sheriff's Department, he said, was "convinced because of our investigation and because of his own self-illuminating statement that he will be convicted of driving under the influence."

In his statement, Gibson said he has struggled with alcoholism and taken steps "to ensure my return to health."

The actor was "participating in an ongoing program to deal with this," Gibson's publicist, Alan Nierob told The Associated Press on Monday. "The guy is trying to stay alive."

I think it's serious that he said some of the things people criticized him for when drunk. The fact that he had those sentiments in a drunken stupor does give people some reason to believe he might just bury them away when sober.

I mean, I don't care - but I think it gives more creedence to the anti-semitic claims people made than they ever had before.

First Jackie Chan, and now Mel? Obviously getting drunk and yelling abuse is the new vogue. If only they all took a leaf out of Paul Jones's book.

The media is anti-alcoholic. :)

I cringe when a celebrity gets called out publicly for their struggles or errors or weaknesses or whatevers. I guess some people think that that's the cost of fame--giving up anonymity, forcing their actions into the spotlight like that--but I don't know that it's such an even trade.

"“I’m not just asking for forgiveness,” Gibson said. “I would like to take it one step further, and meet with leaders in the Jewish community, with whom I can have a one-on-one discussion to discern the appropriate path for healing.”"

what a fag.

he obviously really hates jews deep down, so I can't really see how he could ever make up for it. because people usually tell the truth when they're drunk...unless they're trying to get laid.

because people usually tell the truth when they're drunk...
that is so not true.

but at looking mel's dad and his likely upbringing....anti-sematism seems kinda likely...

you don't think people tell the truth when they're drunk?

people CAN tell the truth when they're drunk...but it's a very poor assumption that being drunk is some kind of truth serum...
this goes hand in hand with the discussion i was having with Nuzz about how we act on the internet vs. how we act in real life.

it's about inhibitions and the like.

when you're drunk...you have next to NO impulse control. you think it, then you do it or say it.
no inhibitions, no impulse control.
lack of rationale or logic, or restraint.

it is a MISTAKE to think that the lack of inhibitions, impulse control, rationale and logic somehow show our "true" selves or make us "tell the truth".
our inhibitions, etc are a HUGE part of our personality. what we don't do is just as telling as what we do.

and our ability to be rational and logical is huge part of what makes us...US.

when alcohol takes that away....we are NOT ourselves.
similar with the internet.

think about it....
how often have you heard of guy going home with a fuckin PIG at the bar....then waking up and wondering what the fuck he was thinking.
it's not like, deep down, he really LIKES ugly ass chicks or something.

yeah, but if you think certain things, you think them. the inhibitions just allow you to keep them to yourself. doesn't mean they don't exist in your brain already. the alcohol didn't put them there.

that's because of blurred vision, not your true self being into gross chicks.

but your impulse control and rationale/logic may tame or curb some thoughts...and rightly so.
and that's part of what makes you YOU. what you DON'T do.

haven't you ever said things you don't really mean?
or do something you knew was wrong and regret it?

can't you have "blurred vision" when it comes to other decisions or statements or actions?

nope. I may have said some things that I probably shouldn't have, but I meant them. and I'm not sure if I've done anything "wrong" when I was drunk, unless you mean stuff like throwing a rubber knife into a ceiling fan to see who it would hit. I probably would've regretted it if someone had gotten hurt though.

oh, well, I do regret climbing onto a roof whilst drunk...but I would've done it if I wasn't drunk, and I probably wouldn't have fallen and broken my foot.

you don't think people tell the truth when they're drunk?God, if drunkenness brings about truth then we've got to get more alcohol in the courts.

I think it varies. The same sort of thing is true for drugs, yes? With weed or whatever you call it now, one friend gets awfully sad, another gets badly nauseated, and one gets giddy like I've never seen before. The giddy one is the one I wait for because that guy sober is one of the most austere sorts of people you'd ever want to meet.

Overheard at the gym this morning and I tried hard not to judge them as they were judging him:

"He ought to be kicked out of Hollywood."
"Celebrities should just stay away from liquor. It does them no good."

Both comments are priceless. The first because how would one go about doing that--as if there's some ruling party. Second, because that attitude is so simplistic and naive and as if liquor does anyone any good.
