For friends of mine who escaped Cuba during the revolution in the 60s, it doesn't much matter who takes over. When Castro goes, they'll be dancing-in-the-streets thrilled.

i know fully well what it's like in a country that's under a leader people hate. and the uproar that happens when that leader is thrown out of power (or dies). The fact that cuba is gonna change dramatically is just that, a fact. no disputing it, because there's millions of people just waiting for the right moment for the next revolution. there's still a really strong underground movement and the followers of che are still there. there's also the incredibly nosy american govt just waiting to make cuba its next puerto rico.

yeah, but of course the people who fled would say that. i hear that some cubans in cuba actually do like castro. maybe they just have no frame of reference or something, i don't know, i have no experience with this matter, i don't really know much about castro. i've heard he's more controversial than just plain evil though.

http://www.cafc.gov/

when he dies there will be 80 million $ "donated to cuba" and each year after, until democratization is in balance, there will be an additional 20 mill sent.
its the american way.

i have a few friends who have been to cuba via mexico or canada. they loved it, and they have said the people are happy even though they dont have much. there is no corporate advertising, and they arent highly educated, but they are happy.

yeah, but of course the people who fled would say that. i hear that some cubans in cuba actually do like castro. Right--I wasn't making a global claim. Just saying that those friends, in particular, will celebrate when he's out of office just because of their own circumstances. (Their father was in a position of authority and at the start of the revolution, his name was added to some hit-list, so it was leave Cuba or be killed. They had friends in high standing and those friends alerted them to the situation so they had to leave basically within hours and leave looking like it was nothing out of the ordinary. They left with their children and they left the rest of their families behind.)

Cuba is actually a reasonably popular holiday destination from the UK. Mr.p and I were trying to work out if there was a way we could go from here, or if that would land us in a load of trouble. Basically as US citizens, the only way we could go is if we spent no money. Somebody else would have to buy our tickets, pay for us while we were there, etc. It's doable but a bit complicated. But next year we can get British passports, and then we can travel on those with no restriction, so maybe in the future. We'll see.

I do think the "poor but happy" stereotype is a bit patronising, though. I am sure that people there do indeed make the best of what they've got and try to lead their lives as happily as anyone anywhere else in the world. But that doesn't take away from the fact that that life is still, for many, quite bleak.

So you know, they're already dancing in the streets in Miami due to him in surgery. So you know they'll be further dancing when he dies.

Now I know the right wing likes to paint him as some ugly monster who'll stomp on puppies and everything, and I know that's overboard. At the same time, the left wing goes out of their way to say how awesome Castro is. Truth is, he is neither.

No matter how much you may love how he thumbed his nose at the big bad USA, it doesn't change the fact that he's a dictator who has jailed dissidents for looking up BBC on the internet or he has jailed homosexuals, etc. etc.

Just remember that the next time you fetishize him.

I hate to say it, but it's cigars that interest me. I smoke about 2 cigars a month, (Used to smoke 'em daily...so back off) and I'm going to be right up front, Cubans are pretty fucking amazing cigars.

Open up that country and let's do some commerce already.

They have so many different things they're saying. The doctors say he got through the procedure and is doing great. Others say he's on the brink of death. I think the bigger picture is, he's 80 years old, his brother who took over is 75, so who's gonna take over for serious in the next decade?

People are driving around with HUGE Cuban flags on top of their cars and other cars are honking to show they're happy too.

The Cubans in Miami are just waiting for him to die already.

I think he was just talking about people in general, not really directed at anyone.

I'm speaking in a very general sense (whenever I hear leftists romanticize what Castro is about in their eyes, when they'd NEVER want to live under his rule). I only quoted you to tell you there is already dancing in the streets from anti-Castro Cubans, not saying you have a fetish for dudes with beards and cigars.

Sorry if it came off that way.

Sorry if it came off that way.No worries. I thought it was funny. I tend to use the word fetish to mean one thing and tend not to use its more general application. That's why that sounded that way to me.
