View Full Version : Being "harassed" at work

I work for a temp agency at some warehouse. It's mostly older guys who are scumfucks and/or rude assholes.
For starters, the main boss is a sleaze bag. He constantly asks me if I was out "partying" or if I'm hungover or something. It's really getting annoying. The other day in front of a bunch of people, after seeing our audits and noticing we had begun producing more later in the day he said "oh so this must have been after you were coming off your hangover"....?????!! What the fuck, even if this guy is just kidding around it's fucking irritating, all I want to do is work, not have some douchebag "flirt" with me.
Not only does he do that, he's also downright mean to workers. Today after he asked some girl why she was a few minutes late she said she had car trouble he replied, "Yeah car trouble that sounds like sleeping late." Fuckface. After I'm done with this job in the next week or so I'm considering lodging a complaint.
Oh, p.s. I'm not sure if it's considered "sexual" harassment, either way it's definitely not cool.

Ha, the doctor I worked for would say some things that weren't really sexual harassment, but not really that...PC... either.
Like, I threw out my back really badly 2 months ago, and I told him "Yeah, I'm getting old!" and he replied "No, you're still attractive." And then last week he was telling me there's another doctor down the street who has the same name as him and is an OBGYN, and sometimes patients come into our office by mistake. He was then like "I wish I could see them, but I can't. I go to jail."
I just chalk it up to him being foreign.

I recently got a promotion and am now in charge of 15 men. They are all pretty cool, but sometimes the truckdrivers that I have to deal with suck. Like one old fart says to me EVERY TIME I have to sign in his delivery, "Hey, darlin, why don't you run and tell someone in charge that I'm here with my delivery." Fucker.

There's difference between chilly climate and hardcore sexual harassment. The former is often a prelude to the latter but to me and in the "sexual harassment" context, the word harassment is often thrown about too casually.
I'm not directing this comment at anyone who has posted above me. It's just something I think about occasionally when this topic comes up in face-to-face situations.

I say quit being such a wuss, either stick up for yourself and put those clowns in their place or shut up and take it. Those are pretty much your options. People aren't psychic and we all think differently. In their minds they may think they are being sweet to you or something. If you don't speak up then you can't really expect them to just know.

People aren't psychic and we all think differently. In their minds they may think they are being sweet to you or something. If you don't speak up then you can't really expect them to just know. It's tricky. Sometimes, you tell people the truth in the most tactful and considerate ways and they go off, and in a work setting that often introduces new problems.
This sort of thing is complex if you value your job and reputation, if you value getting interesting assignments. It's a bit of a game and you have to get skillful at it and know when and how to say something. You can force an issue--brute force it into stopping or happening--but you risk getting blackballed or being seen as a troublemaker and that can lead you down a crappy path. I do brute force when it's absolutely necessary--otherwise, I take a passive approach to the day-to-day problems because if I raised every issue, I'd be miserable and after awhile, no one would listen at all. There's only so much you can work with within the confines of some places so you've got to think about it some. At least that's the way it is where I work, and fortunately, our managers and employees are generally reasonable and civil.

Can you ask your temp agency for reassignment?
Also, reporting this stuff to the agency might be a good idea to help them with future referrals.

I haven't experienced any harrassment where I work, not from men. But there are some women who are just nasty, rude, catty, mean, and unprofessional. And they're supervisors!
I've gone to the department head, I've gone to Human Resources. Nothing has changed, and trying to complain only makes them angrier and more bitter and makes life worse.
There's always the possibility of people being personally annoyed and offended. If there's anyway you can ignore it and not let it affect your job or performance reviews, then try to remember it's a personality conflict. I mean, he's not actually claiming that you come to work hung over or that your job performance is poor, is he? He's just annoying. Does he ever make you feel unsafe or threatened, either personally or for your job status? That's the main question to ask yourself before making a big issue out of it. If he doesn't, then the best thing is to act the same around him, cold and professional, and make fun of him when you're at home.

...actually, this reminded me of ongoing problems I had with one boss, who would try to manipulate me by saying my performance was slipping. I would ask him to please put it in writing so we could address it in a concrete way. This never happened.

I think it's more him being a jack ass than it being sexual harassment. Though it's a type of harassment.
reporting is a good idea I think.
