The Beasties have put out 3 pure hip albums, 2 predominately hip hop albums, and 1 album that's roughly 1/3 hip hop.

They're MC's.

But some people still don't see them as hip hop. Hilarious.

They make decent punk rock music, and while they did originate as punk rockers, that quickly went away as they switched their gears to hip-hop music. Such versatility is uncommon - that is, especially...from punk rock to hip-hop.

I would like to hear what they have to say about switching from punk rock to hip-hop, and if the transfer gave them trouble to adjust to, or if it was a walk in the park thinking of rhymes.

Some of those people that dismiss them as a hip-hop group completely, are out of touch with the hip-hop genre.

I know it's really stupid but for some reason it annoys me sometimes when I go in a music store and they have the Beastie Boys filed in the Rock/Pop section. I guess it's my weird pet peeve :p

the punk rock kids were some of the first to jump onto hip-hop.

This is the best thread so far, a full-on attack against those that think it's cool to get away with liking the beastie boys and not giving a damn about other hip hop. If you even care one nut about how the beasties dress and talk and their interests then you know they are forefathers not of the college grunge scene but of the hip hop scene in ny. Only the biggest music wave from america to hit the world since jazz. And yes: If you like the beasties, racism is a no-go. So next time you cup your wallet-bulge when a black man walks by, remember: You made the mistake and judge a man by his race
You go through life with egg on your face!!!

True. I'd like to read more about that, if possible. A close look at the relation between punk rockers & hip-hoppers. If there were a documentary, that'd be nice.

Your not the only one...

I can't count how many ignorant people I've talked with who swear up and down the Beasties are anything but hip hop artists. Some stores, as you said, even have them in the "rock" section. It's crazy.

I've thought a bit about this, it could be due to several reasons. Obviously, their race. Other white rappers get airplay on rock stations and get places black rappers don't, this is obviously a factor.

Also, their rhyming style. They're like time travelers, straight out of 1985, in terms of their flow, lyrics, and rhyme style. I personally love it, but many so called "rap fans" of today have forgotten what hip hop originally was, and might not even recognize it.

Either way, the Beasties are predominantly a hip hop group. Period.

Two reasons:

Fight For Your Right

Sabotage

The first is indeed a hip-hop song but at the time it was rare for hard rock samples to come up like that so it appealed to rock fans. Sabotage is a rock song through and through. In an interview I saw (or heard, might have been radio) the interviewer said something about Sabotage being a rap-rock song and they interupted and said that they inteded it to be a rock song and that's how they think of it.

Anyways, two of their biggest hits and they attracted rock fans.

I don't care very much what they "are" even if I'm totally convinced that they are in Hip Hop...), the important thing is that they keep on makin great music and that they help me with my mood...expecially to make me laugh when I'm sad...
Anyway i had this discussion a lot of times with many friends that were not persuaded about Beastie Boys "Hip Hop worth"...anyway i think that if they were just 3 dumbs (that had nothing to share with Hip Hop music) they were not still playing music after more than 20 years with the same energy and with gorwin'up crowds of fans...

It's so weird when people see a post that makes a statement- say, you know, for instance, 'Beastie Boys are primarily hip hop, not rock'- and someone responds as if the original post was a question asking what links the Beasties have to rock. What the hell? Did anything in the first post imply that the author was ignorant of all that background?

There's a reason they were to win awards (grammy's was it?) in both hip hop and alternative categorys. The Beasties are innovators, that's what you get for doing you're own thing - as it were.

What pisses me off more than anything is when people say that Vanilla Ice was the first white rapper, and that it wasn't until Eminem came out that white rappers got credibility. That's just a stupid comment to make! Nevermind that they're ignoring the Beastie Boys, saying something like that shows they're ignorant about history!

It reminds me of when VH1 did one of their numerous countdown shows. The narrator said something like, "The only white person who should be allowed to rap is Eminem. THAT'S IT." Keep in mind, this show was on VH1, the same channel that had "Ch-Check It Out" and "Triple Trouble" in regular rotation, and the same channel that had the Beastie Boys perform (Twice!) at HIP HOP Honors in 2004. That makes that comment even 10x more stupid! What the hell is wrong with the people at VH1?

Oh c'mon.... Vanilla Ice.... I think he did not move asses like Beastie Boys do... 8boobs neither...like "sevens and elevens" do...) so please...
About VH1...luckly I cannot see that channel on satellite tv...I could have had a bad reaction against TV!!! Eminem did good albums and good music but I'm sorry, he's got not the same "thickness" of the Beastie Boys... they have grown up passing by different kinds of music and building 'emself....damn.... They are all crazy at VH1!!!

Yeah, punk rock and hip-hop music have so much in common it's not even funny, both were largely ignored when they first came out, both were a big DIY type of genre when they started and most of all neither genre is really as good as it used to be. :(

Punk and hip hop share similar roots and attitude. The documentary "Punk: Attitude" goes over the realations of hip hop and punk a little, and the Beasties talk about it one in a while in interviews. Classifying the Beastie's genre is irrelevant though. They're just a great band who deft genres, and one of the most important of our time.

The style of punk music might be "dead", or on a hiatus, but the attitude is definitely still around.

And as for funk, "Funk didn't die, it just went to the bathroom."
