Apparently, the Chinese government will give you 63 cents if you can save them the trouble and just beat your own dog to death (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/08/01/world/main1855386.shtml?source=RSS&attr=HOME_1855386) for them.

it's pretty fucked up....
but if thier health care system is lacking, and people are dying/suffering of rabies...
people ARE more important than dogs.
it seems so unbelievably despotic to us....in the US or Canada, but china doesn't have the social system and health care system, the media alertness, etc....
thier hands are somewhat tied when dealing with a rabies epidemic.
maybe if they didn't spend so much god damn $ on the military, they could buffer thier health care system and deal with a rabies epidemic without slaughtering the potential carriers.
same could be said for the US in many respects.

I read people were beating dogs on leashes while the owners were walking them
If there are rabies the blood from the animal will now expose people to it
this is evil (n)

3 people getting rabbies is hardly an epidemic anyways.

whoa whoa...hold the rumor train:
"Health experts, meanwhile, said the brutal policy underscores deep weaknesses in China's health care system, which sees more than 2,000 human deaths from rabies each year."
3 people DIED from rabies in JUST THAT COUNTY.
over 200,000 people were bitten by dogs IN THAT COUNTY....
let's all read the article carefully...
"Increased rates of dog ownership have been tied to a major rise in the number of rabies cases in recent years, with 2,651 reported deaths from the disease in 2004, the last year for which data was available, according to the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
About 70 percent of rural households keep dogs, the center said, although rates of rabies vaccinations remain extremely low at only about 3 percent.
Access to appropriate rabies treatment is also highly limited, especially in the countryside, said Dr. Francette Dusan, a World Health Organization expert on diseases passed from animals to people. "

ok so lets start killing everything in the street that causes death.
next up, cats since they're dangerous to pregant women
then we'll work our way up to governments who start falsely based wars...

Regardless, don't you think that there's a more civilized way to go about resolving this kind of pestilence, Q?

of course.
China is still near despotic..practically fascist, IMO.
the leaders make these hardline decisions that would make African warlords shake thier heads...
a more civil and progressive approach would be to contemporize thier health care system to extend to people beyond the major cities (city).
they really have no organized health or disease prevention system in much of thier territories, nor any advanced media system to disperse knowledge...
sadly, counties like this one currently have no other alternative at their fingertips to control rabies epidemics than to eliminate any and all sources of transfer.
many pockets of China are still 3rd world...people don't know that.

Who cares, they're Chinese people, SAVE THE DOGGIES!
i agree
ill give out 64 cents for every chinese person you kill
i mean 64 cents are better than 63 cents, right?
seriously though, if i ever saw someone who would be cruel to an animal then i would jump on his/her back and strangle him/her to death
midget style
Finally I can go walking in China without all those damn dogs jumping on me trying to get my wealthy American food.

They're just dogs.
Yeah, and to the rest here, what better solution?
When you're lucky in your country to work 129-hr weeks at Wal-Mart and you still get legally screwed out of the Chinese minimum wage, making Halmark greeting cards for Americans to inspire their popping out babies based on financial ability to do so, and yet the Americans put their dogs to sleep as well, you're going to do the same Chinese-style, Chinese-style being according to your ability.
Chinese-style is not running your cars on your own methanated poop.
Chinese-style is being a perfect dick to Americans to ensure all the gas wanted.
Chinese-style is not hanging out at the water cooler most of the day.
Chinese-style is your job hanging out, without water or a cooler.
Chinese-style is downright painful. Chinese-style is not keeping the sabbath day holy, IMO.

I thought they ate dogs?
If this trend keeps up, there will be a famine and many human lives will be lost.
Maybe cats will be next on the menu?

Chinese eat a whole bunch of stuff we'd consider weird here. I wouldn't doubt if they already ate cat. It's cultural.
I myself prefer baby seal. Clubbed, naturally.
Fuck the dogs, what about Tibet (http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/SP237476.htm)!

as I posted earlier, my wife's grandma's dog was taken out and clubbed to death. My wife told me that when she was 7, her grandpa had 3 dogs and there was a very similar ordeal going on and all 3 of his dogs were taken outside and clubbed as well leaving her grandpa an emotional mess.
There's a huge overpopulation of dogs in China though. Definitely more dogs than people there and that's saying alot. The strays there make strays in the states look like they've just finished an 8 hour grooming session. I've walked through the streets of Shanghai and have noticed dogs everywhere. In the streets, dumpsters and everywhere else and they looked very mangy and rabid.
It's not like the owners take their dogs to the vet to get them registered and have visits there either. They don't have a pooper scooper policy as well so, there's dog droppings everywhere which has potential to spread disease.
I really don't like the way they go about handeling it and I wish there was more of a humane way they could do it but, after going there and actually witnessing the overpopulation of dogs, I do know there is a problem that needs to be solved.
On the other hand, I've got my own problems to worry about and even knowing that they're brutally slaughtering dogs over there, I'm still going to take care of my daughter and go to work and live my life as normal. I can't be weighed down by worrying about other people's problems. Let them handle it because it's really not my buisness.

Honestly or sarcastic? I'm not into politics but since I visit there frequently, it's my insight.
I mean, I do think it's wrong and brutal but it's their country and they have a different way of doing things so, I've gotta respect that.
Most of them are working at jobs that makes only a quarter of what the average American makes a year and they've got to feed their families off of it so, they themselves don't want to be weighted down by worrying about this.

Honestly. When you've had very close firsthand experience with the problem and actually experienced China's socioeconomic situation it carries much weight. I agree, wholeheartedly with your viewpoint even though the closest I've been to China is Egg Foo Young.
