I already posted about it in the political forum, but I'm just finding this (http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=2259822&CMP=OTC-RSSFeeds0312) pretty disturbing still. Even if I wasn't much of a dog person I'd be pretty upset about it.

I don't think we know the whole story, but I'm much more enraged by the people dying in Africa due to famine or lack of access to healthcare. Just saying.

Oh my god, people are killing some domesticated pets in order to prevent a deadly disease spreading across the largest population on the planet! How DARE they?!!!

"Dogs being walked were taken from their owners and beaten on the spot"

They would have to beat me to death too.

Some pets?

So some people die of rabies and that justifies killing 50,000 dogs.

They have this really cool invention now, its called a vaccine.
Those fuckers should look into it.

Nothing against anyone from China, but that country is fucking ass backwards for being so large and "developed"

Some of the shit they do on a regular basis baffles the mind and it seems no government wants to take a stand against them.

There have been vaccines for rabbies for years, so they should more likely beat to death the people responsible for not making it readily available to the people. Also rabbies can come from rats and other animals aside from dogs. On top of which, most domesticated dogs don't have rabbies, and there's always pretty clear signs they do.

I'd love to wrangle up those pigs and do the same thing to them in the street.

That is pretty sad but they dont want to take a risk i assume; it like when they killed thousand of poultry because they where scared with the bird flu.
MAybe too much anticipation for nothing...

I am a dog person and love them but somethings are far worst then this, like human lives destroy at the moment for an unjustified war.

That is so illogical! I can't believe they are beating the dogs, that's ridiculous. If they must put a dog down there are other ways to do it. Even if rabies was out of control, this method seems inefficient and expensive and time consuming and just retarded. Poor animals! For all they know, the dogs they're killing could have already had their rabies shots. I wonder if there's going to be a big "adopt a chinese dog" trend among celebrities.

Nice that you commented on how they killed poultry in fear of avian flu. I guess people don't care as much about their poultry, in an emotionally attached way.

I bet some people love their chickens and ya know, love them really good!

Chinese have no emotional attach to dog...they freaking eat them in soup so that might explain this quasi eradication. You would'nt see that in canada that is for sure!

Say there were some rampant pothead moron disease endemic to your little region. Say your mom was out walking you on your moron harness and suddenly a group of men are like, 'Sorry, but we gotta beat this pothead moron to death with these here long pieces of wood.' Don't you think that it would be a tad insensitive towards your mom? I mean, beating a dog to death in the middle of the street. Seriously. I know that you're used to seeing this kinda thing in your hood and you'd personally just opt to shoot the animal with your little desert eagle finger and recite some DMX lyrics while smoking like 10 big fat blunts to get yourself in the mood, but most normal people probably still think that this approach is a bit "excessive".

this upsets me greatly too. it's not right. this was their solution towards avian flu too. the chinese dont know how to deal with disease. :(

Well, it's not necessary to generalize all chinese people. But we are talking about a nation that practices infanticide to control it's population. I suppose the thought of newborns being taken from their mothers and tossed in a bucket to die does bother me signifcantly more.

My wife's grandma's dog was involved in this. She's a 95 year old lady and her husband passed away 10 years ago and that dog was her only companion since then.

I just can't understand why they want to do this when there's so many other alternatives.

You can go ahead and change that to some Chinese. Not all of don't have emotional attachments to dogs and not all of them eat dog.

I could be certain that alot of these officials that killed the dogs have a dog of their own and are going through alot of sufferage as well. It's them against the government though and there's really no say in it for them.

Wow. This is absolutely horrific. I can't even think of what to say in response...they went into the villages at night and made noises so the dogs would bark, then went in and beat them to death? That's a nightmare.

I can't imagine having my pets dragged from my home and beaten to death in front of me. I'm with whoever said they'd probably have to beat me down too.

Thankfully bunnies are not prone to rabies.

Chicken tastes like cat.

Beef tastes like...........oh nevermind.

China is the cradle of all civlization. The only thing that has really changed is corporate greed and an unstoppable electronic (http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&q=China&sa=N&tab=wn) media.

They need that military, China is able to produce oil at the rate of 3.504 million bbl/day, unfortunately China consumes 6.391 million bbl/day. One of those things corporations overlook in their greed. China has always been spooky to me, but with the rapid exploitation of China's workforce (792 million Chinese strong) it just seems even scarier.

The whole dog thing sickens me, but seems inevitable when health and welfare are underscored in a society.

Dogs being walked were taken from their owners and beaten on the spot
...
Owners were offered 63 cents per animal to kill their dogs before the teams were sent in

wow, just, wow :(

there are/were a lot of alternative ways to take care of this. I may not be able to describe fully and make a plan of action myself, but really, what the fuck.

This is by far the most disturbing thing I've read in a long time. The picture of them beating that poor dog in the street is just haunting.

Absolutely unreal. :(

edit: It just so happens that a friend and I were talking about this the other day. Not about the rabies but about the fact that in Asian countries, dogs and cats are not considered pets for the most part. Americans look at a dog or a cat as a friend and part of the family but not in the Asian countries. They are more seperated. I don't know why that is.

What the hell are you talking about you weirdo? Killing dogs is completely inconsequential to humans. Sure a few pussies will cry about it afterwards, but they will get over it, and less people will die of rabies.

Grow some balls.

How is this a big deal to us besides being something that sits in the back of our heads and makes us feel shocked when we think about it? How is this effecting our living?

This is their problem. They do have an overpopulation problem of dogs over there and judging byt the looks of them, it's easy to say that at least 50-60% of them have rabies. This includes the ones that have a home because they don't undergo regular checkups nor do they need to be registered. I wouldn't say all of them don't have checkups but I'd say a vast majority don't simply because it's costly and the owners can't afford to take them to the vets.

It seems like we want to make a bigger deal out of this than they do when it's something that they have to face everyday. Walking thier kids around these rabid looking dogs and not knowing if they have diseases. I don't like the idea either but, I'm not going to look at them differently because it's their country and it's not my place to tell them how to handle their problems especially since this isn't new. They've had dog problems for quite some time and maybe this is the only time it's gotten media attention.

I understood, from a logical perspective, what he was saying, and I understand what you're saying. But it's still difficult to fathom it, to think about that level of abject brutality and overt suffering. :(

I know some people who relate much, much more easily to animals than they do to people. I was talking about the Sudanese situation with one of them, explaining it in detail and what the relief efforts are/will be like. I was met with this characteristically blasé reaction/attitude--characteristic in that human tragedies bring about reactions from him that are nearly nil or nearly prescribed, rote reactions. But I absolutely know that when he finds out about the China-dog situation, there will be a monumental blow-up.
