my dad wants to get our dog put down, and i'm not going to let him basically. she's not terminally ill. she's old and has trouble getting around. i've had her since i was nine. and he thinks she's suffering a intolerable amount of stress from my mother not being there, but i haven't fucking been there for the past year. he called me up today crying telling me he was going to take her tomorrow, and i just said "no"
i'm just really pissed and really fucking upset about this, cos she isn't ill. how could he do this to a member of the family? unless she is terminally ill and in a lot of pain, she is not getting put down.

maybe he's overwhelmed with lots of things going on and doesnt want to be troubled more than necessary. understandable, but i'd punch my dad in the face if he suggested that and be very firm about my opinion. have you offered to relieve him of all responsibilities relating to the dog?

seriously if i could have a dog in this house i would, but we'd get kicked out. i don't know what to do. but i don't know, i'm not going to fucking let him do that, just because she's sad, you know?

if she's having trouble getting around, he may well be doing it for her own good. if you haven't been there for the past year, maybe he knows better than you do. what does the vet suggest? i doubt they'd just put an animal down for the hell of it.

i haven't heard word from the vet. this is his decision, which i think is bullshit. she could have more years in her. the reason she's the way she is is because of him overfeeding her. i'm just really angry about the whole thing.

she should be put down only when she is just laying around, doesnt want to eat anymore and doesnt show any interest in life anymore
Now I can finally go to China without all those dogs jumping on me.

The vet NEVER suggests that you put a dog down. They would rather put the dog through all kinds of meds and surgeries and make their money. We put all our dogs down earlier than the vet suggested.
It's hard to know when to do it. It's a difficult time for your dad, so it's good that you're voicing your opinion and making sure that he's not doing it without thinking it through. But it's really going to be his and your mom's choice.
How would your mom feel if she gets home and the dog is gone? That would really trouble me if I were her, unless I was already convinced that it was time. Maybe you can convince your dad to put it off until things are more settled.
