View Full Version : So, I Go Cross-Eye When I'm Really Tired (Or: Longest Time You've Gone Without Sleep)

I learned this last week. I hadn't slept for 26 hours, and I was REALLY tired. I was trying to stay awake for some reason I forget, and then, all of a sudden, I went cross-eyed. I was freaked out at first, so I shook my head and it went away, but then it came back a few seconds later. And it came back like 3 or 4 more times before I finally went to sleep. I slept for 12 hours, and when I woke up, no more cross eye.
What's weird is that I've stood up longer than 26 hours before. I once stood up for 48 hours, and by hour 48, I thought I was going to go crazy. But I never went cross-eyed. Not once.
What's the longest time you've gone without sleep? And have you ever gone cross-eyed because of it? Is this some kind of freaky thing only a few people have, because the only other person I've heard go cross-eyed when they're really tired is Dave Chappelle.

In college I was awake for about 72 straight hours during homecoming week.

I went 5 days without sleep during a field training exercise. It was rough and everytime it would be my rotation for sleep, we'd get attacked with gas so, I'd have to strap on my mask and gear. If it weren't gas attacks, it was opfor invading our bivouac so we'd have to defend it.
After the 4th day, I walked up to a tree and tried putting a quarter in it because I thought it was a soda machine. About 4 hours into the 5th day, I just collapsed and slept.

That's frickin great! I love those types of stories.
I have several friends who pee in laundry baskets in the middle of the night because they think they are in the bathroom.

Oh yeah, I've pissed on my laundry bag that we keep on the end of our bunk beds while I was in AIT. It wasn't due to lack of sleep though, I was just piss drunk. Beyond belief.
I woke up in the morning, went to put my dirties in my laundry bag and noticed it was soaking wet. I asked my roomate and he said, "dude, I tried to stop you". He said that I proped my hand on the bunk bed and just whipped it out and started pissing.

it's preperation for situations that may arrise in which sleeping isn't such an option.
In the real situation, there's hardly ever times when you'd go without sleep though. It's almost mandatory that every soldier should get at least 5 hours of sleep before performing any duties.
There's alot of recieved training that's actually never used. For instance, the 60-70 lb rucksack on a 40 mile march. That shit never happens in the real.

I need very little sleep in general but when a health problem that I have kicks in, I can easily get by for weeks and months on end with maybe 3ish hours of sleep each day. I'm not at all tired when that happens because my body is getting the sleep it thinks it needs so it's a net win.
When it first started happening and before I knew what it was, I would try very hard to get back to sleep and I'd try for hours and it would be frustrating to try and to just be restless. Now I recognize it when it starts and I go with it--usually, I'll get out of bed and take a walk for a couple of hours, do some work/reading/studying, or I'll clean. Sometimes I come here.

I think I'd just fall over and pass out after about 48 hours. For some reason I just cannot go without sleep. I'll be asleep with my eyes open and not even realize it until I wake up. I'd have to be on all kinds of drugs to not sleep for 3 days forget 5 days, I'd probably have a heart attack.
I would be culled from the military on day 1.
I think the longest I've ever gone without sleep is 36 hours or so. My eyes didn't cross but I was pretty bitchy.

God I wish I could do that. Since I was a kid I've slept like 9-10 hours a night. I'd get so much more done if I didn't need to sleep so much. Seriously, I'd probably be fluent in two languages and play the guitar like a motherfucking riot.
