View Full Version : I don't think I've ever cared this little about a new Outkast album

I remember buying the first 4 albums the day they came out. I actually cared to. I wanted these albums. And with the notable exception of Stankonia, I was never disappointed. I took my time buying Speakerboxxx/Love Below, because I knew I wouldn't be feeling it. And I was right. I've listened to it maybe a total of three times. But I don't think I'm even going to bother with Idlewild at all. I don't like any of the songs I've heard and people lied when they said Andre was rapping again. Why do albums together if you're just gonna split it in half between yourselves, anyway?

They've got more songs with other people than they do with eachother:

01. Idlewild Intro
02. Mighty "O" - OutKast
03. Peaches - Big Boi f/Sleepy Brown
04. Idlewild Blue Don’t Chu Worry ‘Bout Me - Andre 3000
05. Infatuation - Big Boi f/Khujo
06. N2U - Big Boi f/Sleepy Brown
07. Morris Brown - Big Boi f/Scar & Sleepy Brown
08. Chronomentrophobia - Andre 3000
09. The Train - Big Boi f/Scar & Sleepy Brown
10. Life Is Like A Musical - Andre 3000
11. No Bootleg DVD’s (Interlude)
12. Hollywood Divorce - OutKast f/Lil’ Wayne & Snoop Dogg
13. Zora - Andre 3000
14. Call The Law - Big Boi f/Janelle Monae
15. Bamboo/Cross (Interlude)
16. Bugg Face - Big Boi
17. Makes No Sense At All - Andre 3000
18. In Your Dreams - Big Boi f/Sleepy Brown
19. Percival & Rooster (Idlewild Blues) - OutKast
20. Matron Angel - Andre 3000 f/Whild Peach
21. Greatest Show On Earth - Andre 3000 f/Macy Gray
22. You’re Beautiful (Interlude)
23. When I look Into Your Eyes - Andre 3000
24. Dyin’ To Live - Andre 3000
25. A Bad Note - OutKast

I saw a video for Big Boi's first single and it blew.

I was a little embarassed for him.

This current single that's playing isn't very remarkable, but I'll probably get the album still.

Maybe it's just a red herring and the album overall is great? Who knows?

The hook is good though.

And this is mainly because Andre 3000 doesn't want to do Outkast anymore, let alone any rap.

why the fuck are they doing an album when their hearts aren't in it?

was it the fans? the record company? the money?
it's not for a lack of talent
disa-fucking-pointing

I think only Andre's hearts not in it from all the recent stuff I have been hearing....

Are they still gonna put out the movie with it?

adam_f
08-03-2006, 02:24 PM
I saw a TV spot for the movie. I didn't know Terrence Howard was in it. And I think I saw Ving Rhames, but I'm not entirely sure.

I remember when Southernplayalistic came out, I was maybe 7 and my brother let me listen to it. I had no idea what "having a smoke out in the dungeon with Mary Jane" meant, but I really liked it. He bought me ATLiens and Aquemini too, with Stankonia being the first I actually bought. I was excited everytime he gave me a new one until the last album which I thought pretty much blew. I like Speakerboxxx somewhat and Love Below has grown on me, but it's not the same. I miss songs like "Wheelz of Steel" where they go back and forth like Run and DMC and songs like "Crumblin' Erb" which I just didn't understand at the time.

I'll buy the new one only because it'll be cheap at Target the day it comes out. That's really it. I still haven't heard "The Mighty-O"

"The Mighty O" was great, very cool to hear Andre rapping again. I don't think he rhymes anymore on the album, but I'll take them like this, split up, rather than no Outkast at all.

I saw the video's for both Dre and Big's new singles, I liked both videos and songs, though they didn't blow me away. They'll have to grow on me.

Hey, it could be worse. They could go back to that "gangsta" shit on their first album...

I got Speakerboxxx/The Love Below a few weeks ago for my record player and I'm not sure what's so great about them. The album wasn't bad or anything it was just........ meh. Why do people love them so much? Is it because the older albums are good? I've never really heard much off of them.

The first album just didn't do it for me. Pot, hoes, guns, etc. It didn't set itself apart from any other rap album released. Outkast became outkast with Aquemini, in my opinion. They woke up.

There's more to setting yourself apart from others than just altering your lyrical content. And how much do you really want to set yourself apart, anyway? I guess they've set themselves pretty far apart from everyone now, haven't they? Hammer set himself apart from everybody too.

And why do nerd rap fans assume that if you're rapping about how wack hip hop is these days and talk about outer space, math, masturbating and being a vegetarian that it's so much more original? Johnny Cash sang about killing people, going to prison/hell and doing drugs right up until he died. Does that make his music mindless or ignorant too?

^well said.

I'll buy this new record but I'm not excited like I was for SB/LB- which I love by thew way. Both discs.

I hate how every interview I read with Big Boi he's obviously trying to compensate for Andre's lack of interest in anything.

anyways, I like both of em, but I could live with Big Boi solo discs from here on out.

Johnny Cash sang about killing people, going to prison/hell and doing drugs right up until he died. Does that make his music mindless or ignorant too?

True, but that's far from the ONLY thing Johnny Cash's songs were about. He had lots of love songs, religious/gospel songs and plenty of concept albums (about the plight of the Native Americans or cowboy stories and the like). He didn't just shoot a man in Reno just to watch him die.

And what's up with the lack of love for "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below" here on this board? I loved that album!

Thanks. I hadn't realized.

From an interview in 2003, a month before Cash died:

"Do what you do. You can't let people delegate to you what you should do when it's coming from way in here [taps heart]. I wouldn't let anybody influence me into thinking I was doing the wrong thing by singing about death, hell and drugs. 'Cause I've always done that. And I always will."

He shoulda mentioned that he also likes singing about the plight of Native Americans and cowboys.

With Aquemini (and to some extent, ATLiens) their beats changed too, not just the lyrical content. They stopped emulating the West Coast with production and became more socially conscious at the same time.

And call me silly, I'd much rather hear lyrics about "outer space, math, masturbating and being a vegetarian" than most of the shit out there today. Thanks.

mickill
08-04-2006, 12:16 PM
There's nothing distinctly West Coast about the production on that album at all. If anything, their production sound was influenced more by artists like UGK, 8Ball & MJG and Parental Advisory. These are Southern artists, by the way.

Is there a communication breakdown here? I'm not saying it's bad that Johnny Cash sang about death and drugs and all the like, but what I'm telling you is that he sang about lots of things and wasn't just limited to those types of songs.

From that quote, Johnny Cash didn't want to be pigeonholed to do only certain types of songs (i.e. he wanted to write songs from the heart), so with that, I say it's good that Outkast didn't limit themselves to "pot, guns and ho's."

I got it at Circuit City this morning for $10 also, and it came with a free Lupe Fiasco mixtape.....the album is amazing. It wasn't what I was expecting at all. Dre rhymes on 3 tracks (Chronomentrophobia, Mighty O, and Hollywood Divorce) and delivers great verses on each. Favorite tracks so far are The Train, Mighty O, Hollywood Divorce, and Idlewild Blues.

I can't rate it on a scale of 1-10, I'm never good at that. But it's definately worth your $10.

Sign they have fallen off: Danity Kane (Puff's TV group with one really cute girl) debuts at #1 and have the #8 pop song in the country. Outkast was #2 and currently have not one song in the top10. I also believe that people have been waiting 2 openly hate since Stankonia. The downside of becoming 2 big although this CD, while decent COMPARED 2 todays mainstream and underground majority CDs, it could be the worst Outkast CD;thus suffering the "Illmatic" effect (having your latest work compared 2 a classic

Big is touring by himself....again. I'm going to pass seeing them, and wait for the real Outkast to come to town (i.e. both of them).

Sales really don't mean shit....it would be nice to see them blow up again, as I like to see artists that actually make good music perform well commercially, but its not essential.

But you can also look at it as a blessing they're not blowing up like last time.....I think everyone can agree, even a hardcore fan like myself, that we had a little Outkast oversaturation with their last album.

I think if their next album (The Hard 10, 10 The Hard Way..which ever they decide to call it) does end up being their final, Dre would agree to tour. I don't think he'd deny the fans a last chance to see them perform together.

Excluding any shows they do after retirement...i.e. Tribe.
