Boys Will Be Boys

Interviewing the Beastie Boys when they are feeling silly is a bit like trying to staple Jell-O to the wall: the harder you try to nail them down, the more slippery and impossible they become. While in Toronto promoting their new live DVD, Awesome…I Fuckin' Shot That!, which includes concert footage shot by 50 audience members on Hi-8 cameras plus heaps of extras footage, the A.D.D.-riddled threesome were in prime wacky form, proving that even if they are in their 40s, they can still act like 16-year-old smart-ass Beastie Boys.

Along with concert footage shot during the Beasties' gig at Madison Square Gardens in New York, Awesome…I Fuckin' Shot That! includes a bevy of extra content, including clips of fans from around the world dressed in various Beastie-inspired attire — "Sabbotage"-style '70s cops, "Intergalactic" jumpsuits, "Ch-Check it Out" cheesy wigs. Adam Yauch (MCA) says the band captured the footage during their last "travelling carnival," a.k.a. world tour.

"I'd say the last thing we did wasn't actually a tour – it was more of a travelling pageant," Yauch explains with a smirk. "So, we encouraged people to dress up for the pageant, not to just wear your every-day dungarees or coveralls or whatever it is that the children are wearing."

"When we do perform live concerts – gigs as the kids, the children, call them — the youth do like to dress up and it makes me proud, to be honest with you, because it is an extravaganza," Adam Horovitz (a.k.a. Ad-Rock) adds. "It's nice to see that people take it seriously and dress accordingly."

The trio of nutty, white, Jewish rappers say they love it when fans attend their shows clad in "tiaras, capes, walking sticks, lizard suits, Sasquatch outfits and chain mail," but when it comes to pinpointing their own favourite costumes, it's a little trickier. These hip-hoppers have, after all, dolled themselves up in many ludicrous outfits during their 20-plus-year career — which has included everything from tours with Madonna, Run DMC and LL Cool J to working with Spike Jonze to pioneering the Tibetan Freedom Concert, which raises awareness about the exile of the Dalai Lama and human-rights issues. While they don't want to talk about all their amazing accomplishments (trust us, we tried), the boys are more than happy to wax absurdly about jumpsuits and chicken costumes.

"We have dressed like chicken from a chain food store," Horovitz teases. "I was a three-piece meal. It was difficult."

"I know they may be disrespectful, but jumpsuits can be fun in their proper place, if everybody's wearing them and it's a team thing," Yauch adds.

It was certainly a "team thing" to get Awesome…I Fuckin' Shot That! completed. The Beasties even enlisted the help of Arrested Development's David Cross to portray the eccentric (and fictional) director of the DVD, Nathaniel Hornblower, for a 30-minute biography extra.

"David Cross is a great, great actor, and he's also well known and respected in the comedy field," Beastie Boy No. 3, Mike Diamond, explains in such an unsarcastic tone that he feels the need to follow it up with a ridiculous fib. "And one thing people don't know about David Cross is that he's a great, great ping-pong player — so great that when I challenged him and I beat him, part of the deal was that he had to be in the DVD."

As for the future, the Beastie Boys say they have "a big oven" with "a lot of stuff cookin', pots, pans — cookin' all this stuff up." While they won't reveal any of the details about what that might mean musically, the jokesters do disclose some bizarre and obviously fictional development plans.

"There's still some great artists that we’d like to tour with: Céline Dion, Barry Manilow, Shaggy. The list goes on and on," Diamond explains.

In his fantasy world, Diamond says he'd love to do a Vegas show with Dion.

"First off, it would be an extravaganza because it's in Vegas," he deadpans. "There would be a lot of water involved, like, her going down a waterslide and us going down a waterslide — her up on a trapeze. You know, us doing flips off a pontoon boat."

As for the other guys, they have more adventurous imaginary endeavors in mind.

"I'm actually designing a ladies' watch right now," Yauch adds before erupting into a giggle fit and having to excuse himself from the interview for a moment.

"It's kind of a comedy watch, so it breaks him up every time he starts thinking about it," Horovitz explains.

Comedy watches? Céline Dion on waterslides? Chicken costumes? It's only 11 a.m., but by now, it seems the only probable source of the Beastie Boys' ridiculous-even-for-them-demeanor is perhaps some herbal or alcohol-related indulgence.

"There's nothing in here," Horovitz replies when I ask him if he's drinking vodka, not coffee, out of his mug. "I'm just pretending."

"This is actually a new energy drink," Yauch adds, lifting his cup. "I don't know if I told you about the new energy drink that I'm working on right now. It contains liquid nicotine, grain alcohol, Ibuprofin … It does have a hibiscus oil, not the regular hibiscus juices."

Some Beastie Boys never grow up.
