May be the shittiest thing i've done to date.

The top manager where i work is a proper arsehole. A supervisor came in the other day, one i liked as well, with her letters of resignation and letters to the area/regional managers because she was being bullied by this bastard. Secondly, he's been coming in each morning and watching the security camera footage from the day before, which is illegal or so i'm told. He's used that to pull people up for pretty daft things, like chewing gum and daft stuff like that, but then he files disciplinarys on them which is just a waste of time. And thirdly, last month i was done out of about 20 hours of overtime because they didn't have the budget to pay me for it. That's fine, i was told it'd be added on the following month, but it hasn't, and now i'm being told there is no evidence i even worked then as the rota page has disappeared! I have a record of all my o/t, and there's no way i'm mistaken.

So aye. Considering this tube is breakin the law, any advice? I've considered joining a trade union, although i've been told by other people i work with that this will ultimatley make things worse as the same manager will cut my overtime and give me all the shitty jobs to do. It's happened before.

Boycott Mothercare, y'all. (Yes i know, mothercare, how gay)

Have you ever listened to "I've Commited Murder" by Gangstarr, feat. Mos Def and Macy Gray? You should do.

I just got a job at Waitrose. I don't care if they rape me in the arse every day with sandpaper tied to their dick, I just want some cashflow.

I don't know what the laws are where you live.

But it does sound like you've got a poor manager. Unless you're being compensated in ways that are satisfying to you, I'd look elsewhere for employment.

Well it's just a student job so i'm prepared to put up, but i know that there are a good few people really trying to get rid of this guy. The O/T thing annoyed me, because i know for a fact he's just trying to exert some authority over me because i'm so young. It happened in my last job, and then i just assumed the manager was having some sort of mid-life crisis because he was 30 something, working in a supermarket and going bald.

Still, i can take comfort in the fact that he'll be getting a ball booting tomorrow for failing to meeting the account card targets. Harhar!

...a student job, as in: a campus job that's part of your financial aid package? If that's the case, you've definitely got recourse. Check with student counciling if you don't already know of a campus advocacy group.

The only aid i get is my university fees are paid by the government, but that's the case for all scottish born students. The job is something i went out and looked for myself, but now that you say it i might be able to get some 3rd party advice from the SRC (Student Representitive Council) at university, although they can't take any action on my behalf.

Cheers for the suggestion.

WWBBD?...What would the Beastie Boys do?

If you really don't care about this job very much, I'd advocate a little thing called

SABOTAGE!

Clog up the toilets.
Break a bunch of stuff.
Send the fucker gay porn in the mail to the jobsite.
Look up kiddie porn on his computer, and foward it to his superior.

You get the idea.

Hehe, the thought had crossed my mind but i want to leave this job with a good reference in the future, unlike my last job.

Although i can envisage hijacking one of their dumpsters sometime soon and dumping it in the River Clyde.

Hopefully you don't need the reference from him, sounds like the type of guy who wouldn't give Mother Theresa a good reference.

Chances are a good reference from a retail store isn't going to be that valuable towards a real job anyway.

Good Luck

Yeah, not towards a real job obviously, but it means i can maybe get something better next summer. Money is money anyway! Thanks.

Retail is like that dude. My bosses refuse to pay saturday/sunday rates that we are entitled to by law. I worked 2 full years of saturday nights and should have gotten an extra 5 dollars an hour. Doesnt sound like much? Well 5 dollars an hour, 6 hours per shift, 52 weeks in a year for 2 years. Thats like $3000. Thats alot to a struggling student.

1. Teh, if you really worked the hours you say you did then raise all hell and don't fucking backdown until they pay you what you are owed. That is nothing but bullshit. Show them the record you've kept. This happened to me once at a job I used to work (security). What I started doing was making photocopies of the weekly shift log after each shift was over. I would check it off in pencil on the log sheet, then copy it, then erase the pencil and put the original back in the log book and take my copy home with me. One of the first things I learned in security was CYA (cover your ass).

2. Yeah, as for the unions over there.......I don't know anything about them so I can't really give you any advice as far as what to do about this dickhead. You said that you getting fucked over has happened before so it will probably happen again. Tread carefully.

It's about this guy exerting what little bit control he has over his life, and yours. You have very little control. Accept it and get back to work!

I HATE retail. I did it awhile back and I understand it's a business and all, but they were so strict about every last little thing that I couldn't see getting paid 9 bucks working at this shitty job and going out of my way to be perfect for them. It felt....wrong.

i like working retail part time. its fun because you get to interact with so many different people...plus you usually get a rad discount.

that being said i would never work retail full time. if retail is not just a "fun" job its way too much work.

retail is awful. that's because people suck. being self-employed is where its at. yes, i still have to deal with people, but at least i call my own shots.
