...or just in australia?

13-odd bucks a kilo.

(in 2003) the headline price for bananas was around 80 pence per kilo. that's 2 australian dollars! someone's being ripped off!

bananas are retailers' largest selling and most lucrative item! they are "known value items", that is, shoppers know what they cost. cut prices on bananas and you put intense pressure on the competition. other retailers have to follow suit and slash their prices.

how much do you know about bananas? (http://www.guardian.co.uk/quiz/questions/0,,876134,00.html)

in 2003 are the key words there.

maybe it's just here - we had a shortage of them because of the storm that hit queensland.

in my supermarket there's signs saying that because of last year's storms and the storm season having been particularly evil, the banana crop of central america was severely affected for this season and that may account for "greener bananas, fewer stock, and higher prices."

but theyre still like 75cents/lb

nah, i only put 2003 because that was the context of that particular sentence. it's still basically the same price, though. for example waitrose sell bananas at 84p/kilo, and waitrose is posh! ms. peachy shops there!

i don't know about the whole storm thing - surely it doesn't cost that much to get bananas from elsewhere shipped to you? because of course britain isn't, uh, a banana-growing nation and we get all of them shipped over. and it's not too expensive. maybe you have a super secret banana tax!

new york only really grows apples. sometimes. so most of our crops come from elsewhere throughout the year, which is how i assume most places are. unless you go to farmers markets <3 but they aint got bananas either.
anyway, bananas for us mostly come from central america. i would assume most bananas for most places come from tropical areas. where else do bananas grow? i eat chiquita bananas. those are dominican.

How much they try to make them look environmentally safe with the little frog leaping they still use pesticides and the working environment is horrendous. I'm not sure if they still deny the workers not to be connected with workers unions or not... Fair Trade and organicly grown for me, thankyou. Here they are just about the same price...

In Texas - $.39/lb for regular 'ol bananas or $.49/lb for organic and every store has them.

That's about what it is here.

I was just thinking the other day that part of what makes bananas such a perfect food is how cheap they are. That's a shame to hear that they're so expensive in other places.

€1.70/kilo

That's about $1/lb

That's bullshit. All of Queenslands bananas were sold localy (ie OLD) and shipped overseas.

The rest of Australia imported their bananas. There are exceptions, but most supermarkets sell south east asian bananas. You can still buy them, they are not rare; most small businesses cannot afford to stock them though.

Retailers band together to raise prices. If one store can get away with selling expensive bananas because of so-called shortages, then the rest will follow.

Banana prices (and anything else for that matter) are like oil prices - you will pay whatever they can get away with charging.

Secret for organic fruits and vegetable: go to the self-check out and enter it as the regular stuff. They look the same so no one will give you shit, and it's $2 bucks cheaper per pound, on average. (y)

And we have no self check out for groceries where I shop. They even bag it for you.

We have self check out at Home Depot. I want to put the bigger things in my cart after I ring them up. I don't want to try and put them on the tiny pad next to the scanner because they don't fit. But that stupid machine keeps yelling at me "put your item in the bagging area . . . put your item in the bagging area . . . put your item in the baggin area." I hate being yelled at.

Actually, once you get to the age of 16, you chew up banana and put it in a water bottle and masturbate with it.

Or maybe that was just my one sick friend. (n)

That's amazing to me. Banana farms, geographically, can't be all that far from you guys, can they?

Maybe it's just that the Americas have a bigger shipping industry for produce and such? Or we scoop down for our coffee beans and figure, "What the hell -- let's get some 'nanners while we're here"?

well most of them are up north in queensland, and brisbane's in the very south east. so yeah most of them would still be a good 1000km's away from brisbane

I have absolutely no idea of what I pay for bananas. There's a category of groceries that I'll buy despite the price. Milk, apples, broccoli, tomatoes, beans, tea, bananas, yogurt, almonds. I have no clue how much these things cost in bulk or for me individually. I just load them into the basket and pay at the end.
