Saw it last night....

if fuckin blew. TERRIBLE CAST...TERRIBLE.
Ferrel was dialed to maybe a 5 or 6 at best....pretty flat.

the script was juvenile....the dialogue was rarely funny.
the antagonist was not funny....

i could not wait for it to end. we actually considered walking out.

it's is literally the opposite of Anchorman, despite the same people writing/producing.

i've realized these Apatow movies are REALLY about the cast....you need to have a strong cast who feed off each other and adlib....to tweek the script.

fuck this piece of shit movie.

I thought the movie was good. Not the best but good. The whole tiny jesus grace scene and then having mos def and elvis costello was great. Gary Cole stole the movie as his dad though.

word...anchorman was really funny. but at least the trailers for anchorman made me laugh. this did nothing to me.
the only thing funny about it to me is that all the rednecks around here that are into nascar and shit were all like "WOOOOHOOOOO! Its gonna be gud one!!!!" but they even were disappointed.

The whole tiny jesus grace scene a mildly funny running gag.

and then having mos def and elvis costello was great.?
they were visual cameos...they didn't even say anthing.

Gary Cole stole the movie as his dad though.
he barely had one humrous line. he just walked through that role.

this movie is comprable to Kicking and Screaming and Bewitched.....
just cause Ferrel is in it, don't make it funny.

All I want is Paul Rudd. He makes things funny. Yes....

And it is my firm belief that DAvid Koerchner (Champ in Anchorman), should never ever have a fucking role in ANYTHING ever again. I don't even know if he's in this movie, but I'm guessing he is, as it's the same people and shit. I wish Apatow would drop his ass, he sucked the engery out of Anchorman like there's no tomorrow, and he's completely incapable of playing anything other than a total hick.

I think the whole "spout out random shit" schtick (i.e. "Knights of Columbus that hurt!!!!") of Ferrell's is getting old quick. Paul Rudd is slightly amusing at best. I like David Koechner. He does well at playing a redneck, but that doesn't mean he's a terrible actor or one dimensional. I think there's somewhat of a bias on Barb's part because Koechner lacks the features of a Paul Rudd.

David Koerchner is good when he has very minor roles. Like in Dirty Work and 40 year old virgin.

My dad is big on Nascar so we made it a family event on the weekend. I agree with Q...it was thoroughly disappointing.

This was validated by the fact that the biggest laughs to be had were during the end credit outtakes.

i love Rudd and Keorchner...and obviously steve carrol...

i'm just figuring out that when it comes an Apatow production of any kind...
the movie really lives or dies based on the depth of cast and thier chemistry, thier ability to adlib and rewrite, etc....

the cast is everything....because the plots are inherintly pretty simple, as are the scripts in general.

i hold Anchorman and 40 Year Old Virgin as example of 2 contemporary comedic masterpieces (though the Virgin actually did have a decent script behind it)....the chemistry of the cast was as essential as the cameras and the boom mics...

that makes sense yeah, i think these movies are largely improvised anyways. i listened to the commentary for the 40 year old virgin and judd apataow didn't seem to remember directing too much.

CARELL. STEVE CARELL. Yes it drives me nuts. I might add an R once in a while, but you murder it.

Paul Rudd is genius in Wet Hot. Andy is my favorite character at times - the scene where Beth tells him to pick up the plate is oscar-worthy. He's also good in the Baxter for the moment he's in it.

To randy - no, I don't dislike Koechner because he's not attractive. I dislike him because he plays a redneck. in. every. role. ever. Why the fuck was he the narrator for Run Ronnie Run? I just don't get how he's gotten so far.

yeah, judd Apatow and Adam Mckay....

both decent writers/producers/directors in the comic medium...
but they rely HEAVILY on thier cast for adlib preformances....re-writes...

if you actually try and watch Ricky Bobby....you'll see how they just never had many good ideas for this script...i think the orginals script was probalby 5 pages longs...with lots of "improvise here" penciled in....
but this cast they had, other than will ferrel....there just wasn't much to work with.
that big black dude from green mile? john reilly? they ain't the drop dead funny types...the kind that could just adlib and fead off of ferrel.
and the rest of the cast was fuckin useless....i mean....seriously terrible casting.
and who thought that having a gay french nascar driver would be a hilarious antagonist?
take one moment to think of all the obvious "gay french" jokes you can.
guess what...that's all they could think off too. and they tried to make a character out of it.

there were tons of scenes where the director literally just forced Ferrel and another actor face to face (with no script or dialogue), hoping they would do something funny. it was hard to watch. nothing happened....both actors would totally flounder.
and they just kept it in the movie.

This movie was tailored to the nascar fan (like myself). The directors even had to change the script because nascar thought "it was going to make them look stupid." So more than likely it could have been better.

One other point.....People still see Nascar as a redneck sport, but jesus christ its not 1950 anymore where they made moonshine and ran from the cops.

I myself wasnt a big fan at all until i went to see a race and there's like 200,000 fucking people. Complete insanity! You never think, "wow they are just going in circles."

Id compare it to (depends on what race you go to) a baseball game at Wrigley Field. You dont just go to Wrigley for the game, its the atmosphere (the people, the food, the tradition)

It's definately a sport some of you would like if you saw it in person.(either the racing or getting drunk and smoking weed in the infield with thousands of other fans)

Anyways, this is a movie tailored to nascar fans. It's not for everyone.
