...so I decided to give the TV series THE SHIELD a shot.
Wow. Nicely done. Very, very nicely done. I go back and forth on whether I like Vic Mackey, usually without realizing it. I'm only on disc three of the first season, but I like the way that the chickens keep threatening to come home to roost at any time, and then he gets all the balls in the air again. Not to mix metaphors or anything, but.
Anybody else watch it? Does the series stay this good?

Its one of my favorite shows on tv. I can't wait for each episode and the time between seasons is painful.
It stays that good all the time.

Very cool. (y)
When I first started watching it, I was figuring they were setting Vic up as the cop who skirts the law to Get Things Done. Then, as more revelations occured, I was like, "Holy shit -- this guy's corrupt!" but he really thinks he's on the right side.
Chiklis plays that arrogance really, really well. Really well. He finds all kinds of shades as an actor in what could've easily been a kind of cardboard character.

Yup. One of the few shows out there where you don't see the actor but see the character. I would actually be afraid to see him on the street.

thats a very good way of describing it, i think the camera angles help give it that air of realism it has

...the Barn is a great set, too. The place looks like shit, and the fact that it used to be a church is gold.

That's one I was looking at, too. Good stuff?
I kind of held off on both of these because I didn't want to see another fucking police/crime show. It seems so played out. But this stuff's good. (y)

It's been my crack for the last month. I bought season one and finished it and then rented season 2 and I've finished that. I'll keep on renting them but I will also buy the whole series.
Vic is such an awesome cop and I like where he stands such as despising kiddy porn and rapists and such. IRL, of course that kind of cop would be terrible but, it makes for a good show. Al Capone with a badge as I heard someone describe him on one of the series says it all.

I've just gotten into series 5 on Channel 5 in the UK. It kicks arse.
Who'd win in a fight between Vic Mackey and Regan from The Sweeney?

Rare that a show has a great ending and throws you for a loop. What a great finish to a great series.

Its hard taking on new shows, it always feels like I just don't have time, and yet every year I get obsessed by several new shows- The Shield has been threatening to be my newest addition for some time now, but with all this good buzz I guess its a done deal now(ish- gotta finish a few things first).
As for the Wire, just mentioning it in the same breath is a good sign. I think a lot of people stayed away from the wire for just the reason you gaze a-z (same ol cop and robber bs) but after seeing how mind bendingly awesome and game changing the wire was I am way more open to this genre (never was a huge fan). Good stuff

glenn close is good in damages too.
i suppose that is kind of shield related.
in a way.
(damages is about lawyers, not cops.)

Yup. The series is over.
i just finished watching this series; good stuff, definitely helped with the wire withdrawal. of course now i have to find something to fill TWO voids
i liked how vic was the protagonist of the show, and claudette was sort of his main antagonist, but you as the audience really couldn't get mad at her for trying to stop him because she was a good cop and he probably deserved to get stopped. yet you were still kind of rooting for him. i like shows with complicated characters like that
i also liked dutch because i like seeing sexually frustrated characters on TV. there are too many sexy people on TV, i like it when they strike out
anyway end spoilers: poor ronnie. i guess he was part of all the bad shit and deserved to get arrested but i was growing to like him, sucks that he got hung out to dry like that. and for no good reason! you can't feel too bad for vic - his uppance had to come and i can think of worse fates than a $62,000 year job with the federal government
i'm thinking deadwood next

I started watching this and got lost somewhere in season 3 or 4.
Might give it another go because I was really enjoying it (in a cringy sort of way).
Watched all of The Wire in a couple of weeks time though. Wow. Just wow.
