View Full Version : So, I hung out with our receptionist on Friday night...
My boyfriend, the receptionist, the receptionist's boyfriend and I met up on Friday night downtown to enjoy the festivities of Hot August Nights. We sat outside, ate a little, drank a lot and people watched... When my boyfriend and I arrived, the other two were already shitfaced drunk and supposedly on acid as well... At about 10:30, we paid our bill and started to walk around downtown, but there were cops immediately talking to the receptionist and her b/f. They got arrested... her for being a minor (she's 20) in possession and drunk in public and her b/f for being drunk in public (he's of age)... She spent the night in jail, blew a .081 at 11am the next morning (over 12 hours after she'd stopped drinking) to give you an idea of how drunk they were... She attended her court hearing yesterday and has to attend AA classes, blah blah...
So, she walks into my office just now and looks weird (face is all puffy), so I ask her what's wrong? She says she's still shitfaced from last night (3 nights after she's arrested) and is pissed off at her b/f... I ask if he dropped her off at work and she says, No, I dropped him off at his work and came here. She also was slurring a bit as she said this. Now that I've been out socially with her, it makes it a bit awkward to know that she's fucked up at work now... would you keep quiet about this or tell someone?

Talk to her first.
Keep quiet as long as she doesn't have to operate heavy machinery, I suppose. I don't think killing someone would add to her legal problems! I don't know how she's still shitfaced 3 days later. Maybe she really does have a problem?

When I read the first line, it was like My boyfriend:The receptionist. I thought, hmm a new Hugh Grant movie!
Anyway, I would talk to her and just say something about how somebody mentioned she seemed off, so she might want to be careful. How long has she been working there? It seems like she would have fucked up enough so far to have gotten fired if she's been there a while, working when she's messed up.
as long as she isn't messing up, i don't see any reason to narc on her. i'd just do what dandy said, make her think that people are beginning to notice and she'd better stop.
i'm passive aggressive like that, though

Bob, people have been noticing you're paranoid. I'm not saying you are, but... you know.

it's hard to talk sense to 20 year olds. I say kick her ass.
She's continued to party since getting released Sat. morning, so that's why she's fucked up... She's been here for about 9 months... has admitted to taking pills (vicodin, etc) on her lunch hour to get her through the rest of the day...

I beg to differ. If she's the receptionist, she's the first person anyone outside the company deals with when they come through the door. I'd say that makes it, oh, everyone who works there's business.

Now, unless i'm missing something here, it seems she drove to work while fucked up. For that alone you should break her stupid fucking drunken nose.
Working while fucked is one thing, but the minute you get behind the wheel of a car in that state, you deserve no respect from anyone.
In short, without having met her, I think she is a cunt.

C'mon, people. Wake up. There is no way in hell she can be hammered 3 days later. She's drunk all over again and she does have a problem and she does need help.
You should talk to her first. If it doesn't work then maybe try again but I really don't think it is your place to go tell on her. It's not your business. Her situation will handle itself.

haha, this made me laugh. yeah, i didn't notice the driving when drunk thing. that's not really very cool.
i'd have a word with her, rather than grass on her. if you went out with her and she was open about the fact that she was tripping, sounds like you know her well enough to say something.
i think one of the most surprising things for me when i was reading your story, was the fact that you can get arrested for being drunk in public at the age of 20 -- or was it the "in possession" bit that did it?

from personal experience i can say that working with a drunk is not fun. (remember that saga?)
but this girl is super young and im sure she's a party girl...so she'll probably grow up soon.

You might want to get some advice from an hr professional before you do anything. I don't know, but in this day and age it seems like you can get yourself in trouble in the workplace pretty easily.
And I disagree wholeheartedly with people saying its not your business. She made it your business when she told you about it. And peachy is right, as the receptionist she needs to project professionalism. And I don't care what anyone says, if you're fucked up on painkillers and alcohol while you're at work, someone will notice no matter how good you think you are at hiding it.

Sounds like she’s what’s known as a functioning alcoholic or addict. The fact that she may not be fucking up at work or anything doesn’t mean she doesn’t have a problem. You just need to decide if you are concerned enough to try and do something about it. I mean is this about trying to help someone with a problem or trying to save face at work? Either one is fine it just changes how I would approach the situation. Then again what 20 year old doesn’t like to booze it up and go to work drunk every now and then?
Today she has called in and said she's taking her b/f to the hospital...
