View Full Version : The Metalheads thread

Jep, this is the metalhead thread, but I ask of everyone to recommend me some of the better metal bands out there. I don't mean the most obvious, like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, and of the like, but some of the newer bands out there. I'd prefer newer metal bands in vein of the 1980s hair bands, but if not, I'm open to different styles, just not the screamy type bands.

Some of the metal that I like currently are Mad Max (my current favorite) and Green Carnation. So metal similar to them, if possible.

And yeah, go ahead and discuss metal in general. What have you.

I don't know if you'll like em, but damn I'm feelin'

Lamb Of God
Hatebreed
&
Unearth

out of the latest crop of metal. You may wanna check em out.

Slayer's new album is kick ass as well.... pff I never thought I'd hear myself say that, well I guess technically I didn't, I typed it so HA.

I didn't care for Lamb of God. If I remember, when I was at a music store previewing out albums on those music samplers, I listened to some Lamb of God songs, and I didn't like the growling/screaming. I believe it was them that did that. Or maybe that was Manowar. (which have hilarious album covers)

Hatebreed & Unearth, I'll get back to you on these. Thanks for the choices.

Alright, so...

Hatebreed - A lot of screaming/growling. I didn't like them so much.
Unearth - See above.

On the other hand...

Ayreon - FUCKING AWESOME. They're an experimental/folk/metal band from Netherlands, and they have a lot of band members - like the size of an orchestra. Everyone needs to check them.

Elvenking - They were pretty decent at first listen - from Italy.

Edguy is an excellent German metal band. Do check them out. ...This thread is starting to be the exact opposite as what I intended it to be. ;P

Black Label Society? I have never heard of them. But I will look into it tomorrow. And same with Slayers. I never listened to them.

slayer and BLS are.... pretty much 1st priorities when it comes to metal. if you haven't heard anything from either of them, drop everything and buy Reign in Blood (thats a slayer record). as far as BLS go, anything.. i don't dive deep into their stuff because it's not my metal style.. i don't change channel when they're on though. zakk wylde is a beast on the gee-tar.

Dillinger Escape Plan, abit hardcore metal/punkish for you. Mathcore, but they're very good.

Sepultura, Pantera, Slayer...are essential.

What about alt. Metal? Tool, System Of A Down (toxicity era), Faith No More (angel dust has some metal on).

Black Sabbath :D

Mastodon, Dillinger Escape plan, ISIS, Neurosis even if the last three might not be really considered as metal...

I'd recommend Megadeth. My favorite is Rust in Peace but all of their other ones are great too.

Prong

Corrosion of Conformity
I think South of Heaven is better than RIB-Tzar
Soulfly
Fu Manchu
Suicidal Tendencies

That's true, and that can said for a lot of the progressive style of metal, and all those fantasy themed metal bands. I don't mind that alternative style - it's actually refreshing than the same conventional style of metal. As long as it sounds good.

RETURN OF THE WARLORD

Now the time has come when all is said and done
Were back together on the road its time to fly
No more time to wait you know it feels so great
Wearin leather on a horse of steel I ride
I aint waitin to get old Im runnin hot Im never cold
Kiss my ass if you dont like me I dont care
I got my wheels got my friends were on the road again
Were all crazy gonna ride until we die

Time to burn you losers better learn
No one controls our goddamn life
Well do just what we feel riding horses made of steel
Were here to burn up the night

Losers try to put us down its just another day
I got no money or big house just got life
I dont like to save its more fun to spend
If you like metal youre my friend
And that bike out in the yard well thats my wife
Dont try to understand me my family never will
Had to punch my teacher out now hes chilled
I might stay in school or die in prision
Either way its my decision one more beer and heavy metal
And Im just fine

Time to burn you losers better learn
No one controls our goddamn life
Well do just what we feel riding horses made of steel
Were here to burn up the night

We are the undefeated were not living in the past
Were here tonight to kick some goddamn ass
Feel the power of the wheel lets drink to riding steel
Livin hard and ridin fast

Time to burn you losers better learn
No one controls our goddamn life
Well do just what we feel riding horses made of steel
Were here to burn up the night

Now that my friends, are some badass true metal lyrics.

All hail Manowar!!!

Here are my impressions on a bunch of progressive metal bands -

Age of Nemesis - I listened to the song 'Buried Somewhere', and while I was liking the music, the vocals sounded more like rapping than singing, and I didn't like that. It didn't work well, anyway.

Ascension Theory - I listened to the song 'Passion of My Heart', and I enjoyed the lyrics. It has an average metal style, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. 'Lockstep' was a lot of the same, but it had a catchy chorus.

Cea Serin - The intro of 'Meridian's Tear' started out great, with a guitar playing an interesting combination of chords. The vocals are alright - they go from mellow to screaming. I found another song to play in a similar fashion, so that may tell me that they have little variation.

Divinity Destroyed - OK, 'Sweet Heresy' started out beautifully with a simple guitar solo, and then my ears were bleeding from the growling, but then it went back to melodic singing. Since the growling is minimal, it's a pretty good song, and as such, ditto for the band.

Mindflow - I listened to 'Innerfaith'. I didn't care for the vocals.

Pagan's Mind - Here we go - the much talked about Norsk band. I listened to 'Supremecy Our Kind', and the introduction is simply awesome sounding. From the guitar to these unique high pitched noises. The vocals are just as good. They sound dramatic. These guys live up to their name.

I'll go on (just because I'm that impressed with them) - I also listened to 'Osiris' Eyes', there are bizarre vocals on this one, but a lot of the same quality I heard on the first song.

Shadow Gallery - I listened to 'Introduction', and I get a familiar 1980s metal style. There are catchy lyrics, and nice, melodic vocals. I dig these dudes.

Star One - This is a side project from the same people of the metal band, Avyreon, and from what I heard, (which was little, since I couldn't find any full songs to listen to - it was nothing special, to me. Then again, I didn't give them enough of a chance, but oh well. Maybe someother time.

Sun Caged - This is a Dutch progressive metal band. I listened to the song, 'Unborn'. There were some interesting melodies in the background, and the vocals were pretty good. They didn't stand out much, though.

Symphony X - Here we go - another popular metal band from Jersey. I listened to the song 'Here are my impressions on a slew of progressive metal bands -

My impressions - Part II:

Dysrhythmia - I listened to the song 'Sleep Decayer'. From the very first second, all you could hear is chaotic sounds. You can hear lots of drums as well. I wasn't sure if I should add this band, in the first place, as they are somewhat undefined, genre-wise. You could say they're rock, and any further would be a complex break down.

Their main feature seems to be complex drum sequences, since they're present on other songs as well. Overall, I liked this band. They're interesting, and unique. And from Brooklyn, New York.

Behold The Arctopus - They are a progressive metal band from Brooklyn, New York, again. I listened to the song 'Sensory Amusia', and again, I came across constant unorthodox guitar play. It was a unique song, to say the least. Also, I don't know if this title is an album title of theirs, but I was amused by the phrase, Nano-Nucleonic Cyborg Summoning.

Another song of theirs that I listened to was 'Alcoholocaust', and it was a lot of the same as the other song. All you heard was general insanity, and impressive guitar work going on. The general flow of speed of the song was quite fast.

Vision Divine - This is an Italian progressive metal band. I listened to 'God is Dead'. It wasn't bad, but not the best. I wasn't crazy about the vocals, but at least they aren't screaming their vocal chords to death. Some decent stuff here.

Adagio - This is a French (progressive?) metal band. I listened to the song 'Dominate'. It started out with an epic introduction. It somewhat reminded me of a 1980s/early 1990s Zelda tune - particularly the dungeon music, but not with simple 8-bit sounds. I liked them, though. Cool band.

Circus Maximus - This is a Norsk progressive metal band. I listened to 'The Prophecy'. It certainly caught me off guard, initially, as it was a soothing introduction, with a calm guitar solo, followed by melodic vocals, and it continued like that throughout the song. I liked this very much.

Anathema - This is a progressive metal band from Liverpool, United Kingdom. I listened to the song 'A Natural Disaster'. It started out with a calm mood - simple intruments being played. Then female melodic vocals kick in. And I'm already sold, as I enjoy hearing nice female vocals, especially with metal.

Ark - This is a Norsk progressive metal band. I listened to 'I Bleed'. It's a pretty decent song. There is nothing that stands out, in particular. Fairly standard routine metal song here. I wasn't interested.

As a note, I stumbled across a Swedish glam-rock band called The Ark, and them, I liked a lot. The vocals were melodic, and especially catchy. I'll keep them in mind. And yet another note, I stumbled across another Ark-based band name - Spanish band, Ebony Ark. (odd name) They were decent, but I liked the glam-rockish Swedes more so.

Dead Soul Tribe - This is a progressive metal band from Florida. I listened to 'Powertrip'. The introduction starts out with a sample, which is a rarity in metal, or at least from what I've heard, which has been quite a bit so far. From there on, excellent guitar play can be heard, with distant-sounding vocals, that are slightly distorted - I like this touch. I enjoyed this band.

Threshold - This is a progressive metal band from Surrey, United Kingdom. I listened to the song 'Mission Profile'. It starts off really well, with multiple vocals singing in sync, in a melodic fashion, then the lead singer takes cue. I liked them.

**

I'll stop there, but I'm not finished yet. I have fourteen more progressive metal bands to check out for a taste test. My Part III impressions will be up tomorrow night. Out of this list, Circus Maximus, Dead Soul Tribe, and Threshold stood out from the rest. I recommend giving them a try.

Part III impressions:

Nightingale - This is a Swedish progressive metal band. They are from Örebro. I listened to the song, 'The Glory Days'. I liked this song. The vocals were melodic, and sounded good.

Liquid Tension Experiment - This is a progressive metal band. I listened to the song, 'Acid Raid'. Their general theme seems to be fast-paced music. This song is of no exception. I liked it, and in turn, I liked LTE.

Starbreaker - This is a progressive metal band from Glen Cove, New York. I listened to the song, "Cradle to the Grave". Straight off - this is melodic rock. I can't say anything stands out from this song, but it's a good song, regardless.

Angra - This is a Brazilian power metal band. I listened to the song, 'Escaping'. I heard no vocals on this, but it was just an instrumental. I thought the guitar play was awesome. Even without any vocals, they keep you entertained. This was a cool band. You don't see too many South American metal bands, that I'm aware of.

King Crimson - This is a progressive/experimental band from Reno, Nevada United States. I listened to the song, 'Three of a Perfect Pair'. There was no hard metal to be found here. This was a mellow song, with melodic singing. It was a catchy tune. These guys are known to be influental to others. I liked them.

Watchtower - This is a progressive metal band from Austin, Texas United States. I listened to the song, 'Tyrants In Distress'. This was rather boring. It was more like trash metal, which I'm not a fan of. I pass.

Atheist - This is a death/trash metal band from Florida, United States. I listened to 'Piece of Time'. I didn't like it at all. Again, I'm not a fan of death & thrash metal.

Cynic - This is a progressive death metal band from San Leandro, California United States. I listened to 'The Eagle Nature'. This was an interesting song for a simple reason - the occasional robotic-like voices that came up. I didn't care for the growling. Despite this being death metal, they added a unique element that seperated them from the typical death metal style. For this, they get my props. I say they are fair.

Dark Suns - This is a progressive metal band from Leipzig, Germany. I listened to the song, 'Patterns of Oblivion'. It was pretty mellow. The voices were the same tone. I couldn't say I was that interested. They were decent, I suppose.

That concludes my three part impression. Out of Part III, I liked King Crimson the most. They had a special vibe to them that made them different from the rest.

Edit: For some reason, I had repeats on Part I. Weird that.

I always thought that King Crimson was British and not metal. I guess I don't understand the parameters of new metal any more than I understand shoegazing. Maybe Fripp was the only British one? But wasn't the guitarist in The Police in King Crimson too? The little short guy -- he ws British. WTF do I know.

Smile at the face of God
And your reward will be eternity

Strike above the neck and at all extremities
