Yeah, not sure if this belongs in the "Other Music" section but what the hell...

Robbie William new (C)rap song, Rudebox is getting airplay at the moment and after watching the video on Channel 4 last night I realised that he uses 3 lines, word for word, from Paul Revere (it is around 1 min 49 sec into the song if you download it).
It is the bit about riding to the border, sheriff after me etc...just wondering if permission has been granted for this act of plagerism or do the Beasties have a nice wad of greens due their way?

Personally if I were a Beastie I wouldn't have minded if "Rudebox" was any good, but...

I remember once on top of the pops he was getting the crowd going and he was singing bits from body moving. Tosser

Hey!
Don't diss Robbie, he's got the same birthday as me!

And isn't it an honour being quoted like that? Guess you didn't know he'd been listening to Beastie Boys in his youth...

I saw him live yesterday and he played this song in full adidas-outfit. Don't know why but it slightly reminded me of the Beasties

I highly doubt he ran out of lyrics.

Personally, I don't give a fuck about Robbie William, but I hope you realize that every other word out of the Beastie's mouth is taken from some other rapper/musician/tv show/etc/etc. Its hard to complain about 3 words when the Beasties are taking whole choruses.

there's a difference between referencing (which is at times clever or obscure referencing), and what you say isn't true. every other word?

besides it's 3 direct lines, not 3 words.

Although RW is a douche, I'm sure he's not trying to play it off as his own shit. He's probably just respecting the boys in his own way.

Bboys, Sublime, JayZ, all do this. Some of my favorite artists.

hey it's been not the first time the beasties got quoted. it would be bad if he'd deny that he quoted them. I guess he just want to show his respect, yep

Yeah, well exactly. I've never had a problem on hearing this, it's kinda cool. Not every pop star quotes a hip hop classics lyrics.

Dude, ever hear of an expression? Obviously "every other word" is not a reference. What I'm saying is that lots of Beastie lines are taken from other musicans. In fact, I can't think of anyone who does this more than the Beasties. They take whole lines, whole choruses, whole freaking songs (Slow and Low). So its ridiculous to try to call somebody out for using a couple Beastie lines.

The bottom line is, one, most Beastie Boys fans don't have the musical knowledge to realize the breadth of their referencing and sampling so they often credit them with creating shit that they're referencing (don't even let me get into pulling up the posts). And, two, lots of shitty musicians reference the Beasties so every time this happens somebody gets pissed and acts like its some crime to reference. If its fatboy slim or lincoln park or whatever else your average beastie fan listens too then its cool that they borrow, but if its somebody they don't like, like Robbie William (whoever that is) y'all act like its the end of the world.

Not to say that there's no difference between dropping references and biting, but the shit you guys are talking about is not biting. The people wearing VW symbols around their necks trying to rap like Adrock are biters. This dude is probably just some wack motherfucker who dropped a Beastie Boys reference.

So, did he say Köln is his fave city in Germany and the FC his fave soccer club?

Nah, but he said a zillion times that he loves the Germans and that we're all his friends and he will come to Germany till he dies and that he wanted Germany to win the World Cup (after England) and bla bla bla...

I'm not 100% sure about the US, but in Canada he has only had like 2 hits (Millenium and Rock DJ)... it's probably the same in the states, pop music between the two countries is largely one and the same.

Yeah, that's fine. As a comment to some people. I never had a problem with this news anyway though for fucks sake! I was just pointing out that, even in expression, 'every other word' is a bit much, and that you'd made an incorrect point regarding the '3 words'. The way i saw it was you'd misunderstood the post, cos no doubt there's plenty of artists who's use the same 3 wods as in Beasties songs, so I was just pointing out that it was an actual reference from Mr Williams.

I don't act like it's the end of the world at all. Sure, I'm not Robbie Williams (sucessful UK solo singer by the way, of ex-Take That UK boyband fame) biggest fan, but I said I thought it was kinda cool - and that's always the case whether I like the group/artist or not. So don't quote me and give me all that shit, when what you're saying (possibly) applies to other people.

I love the Beasties referencing, for a number of reasons. Maybe I misinterpreted, but you just seemed to put it across in a they're-always-ripping-people-off kinda way, which to me isn't the case.

All I'm saying is that its flawed logic to attack this dude for referencing the Beasties when the Beasties are constantly doing the same shit.

Attacking this guy for referencing either shows a lack of understanding of what the Beasties do, or a double standard (i.e. its okay for the Beasties to do it but when someone else does its not okay.) See, I never added a negative conotation to referencing or using other people's lines/music as long as its not biting. I never incinuated that there was anything wrong with referencing. That's an idea that came from you, and other people in this post. That's indicitive of a major problem with the general public's lack of understanding of hip hop and music in general. Just about everyone in music does it to some degree, but most people do not realize it so they shun it and act like its morally wrong or something.

So hating on this fool because he referenced some Beastie lyrics is either ignorant or hypocritical. If you want to hate on him hate on him for a good reason; because his music is wack as fuck, or because he's fake, or because he has poor character. But as soon as you start hating on him for referencing you might as well turn that hate directly to the Beasties because they do that shit more than he does (albiet much better).

I haven't 'attacked' him once, or shown referencing to be a negative thing at all. So again, don't quote me and present that idea when I haven't so much as hinted at it.

By all means make you're agument at people who have done so though, if you feel it's important. But by the way you're sounding people aren't going to get the message anyway, cos you generalise Beasties fans as people who don't think outside the Beastie Boy world, and are always going to be ignorant to the shit you're trying to put across.

yeah he sucks, i unfortunately hail from the uk and cannot watch tv or listen to radio without Robbie popping up. To all whom it may concern robbie is an attention seeking sell out mainstream artist who insists on mentioning his cock size at every interview. i know i will proberly get qoutes saying 'hey its just about the music!' but his videos make it hard for you to see past how much of a twat he is and appreciate his music!

In my opinion i think sampling is great and the beasties pull it off because they are alternatives- unlike robbie who is just a sell out pop artist who would attend the opening of an envelope if he thought he could sell a couple more copies of the stuipidly named rudebox
