...anybody here read anything by Stegner?
I just started All the Little Live Things and I'm hooked. It's about an older couple -- gracious wife, crusty retired man -- who own a big spread of land south of San José (coincidentally -- I didn't know that until I started reading). In the first few dozen pages, a hippie moves onto their land, pissing off the old guy (first by building a platform for his tent, then starting to throw parties, then building a treehouse); then another young, free-spirited couple buys the house on the neighboring lot and -- well, that's where am I right now. But it's really, really well-written and observant, and some nice conflicts are getting set up.
