....BLOW.
Exhibit a:
Smokin Aces trailer (http://www.smokinacesmovie.net/teaser/)
Does anybody else feel like this whole trendy "supercool", 3 billion mile per hour, flashy, slowed down/sped up, music video style of making crime/action/gangster movies is getting a little tired? I enjoy movies like Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels as much as the next guy, but this is getting out of hand. It's hard to tell from that clip, but I'm pretty sure I saw Jeremy Piven assault a man by throwing a playing card at his neck. And perhaps even more unbelievable, Ben Affleck plays what appears to be a very "threatening character". This looks like a second-rate Snatch. I hate Andy Garcia. Common is like one of the safest tree-hugging rappers out there. Ryan Reynolds? Jason Bateman? I mean, I like him, bust seriously, who casted this? The only actor that seems to make any sense is Ray Liotta. Alicia Keys is in this! Who's falling for this trash? Then again, this movie's being brought to you by HUGH GRANT INC. I don't know what I expected.

And not entirely unrelated to this topic...
Tony Scott, please stop making movies already. Your greatest achievment to date is still Top Gun. Your big brother's is Blade Runner. I think it's a safe bet you won't be outdoing him anytime soon. Domino was beyond stupid. Just stop. And I still haven't forgiven you for True Romance.

I love crime movies, but I got tired of the new-style ones shortly after Pulp Fiction.
I couldn't stand Lock Stock, etc.

Alien was a great movie.
how can you talk smack about true romance? its a great movie from beginning to end.
The Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper scene by itself makes it one for the books.
As far as this goes....ill see it. on cable. If you don't set your expectations too high for it, im sure it would be entertaining.

Ridley did Alien, though. Ridley's all right by me. His brother needs to be brutally assaulted for most of his movies, though.

Sorry, my point was Alien > Blade Runner. My personal opinion has something to do with the fact that Blade Runner was so different from the book though.
Tony Scott has always been a tool.
Throwing cards is serious (http://www.davidslife.com/funstuff/cards/styles.htm) BIDNESS. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o16DcNuXHcs)

Have you watched it recently? I used to think I liked this movie too. I think Gary Oldman's performance was good. A bit overdone now that I think about it. The often cited Walken/Hopper scene is fine, but it's not like it carried the entire movie. And not only is Christian Slater a clown in real life, but he plays a really big one in this movie. He's completely unlikeable. And the score sounds like music that got left off of the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack. Hate this movie.

^i never got the hipster fascination with True Romance. i've never been able to watch more than a few minutes of it at a time...i just can't get into it.

I hate Quentin Tarantino.

I don't mind Tarantino. I think he's made some good movies. It's more that I could do without a lot of the little things he chooses to incorporate into his movies/screenplays.

I liked 'From Dusk Till Dawn' simply because Fred Williamson had on prosthetic vampire make-up. I'm pretty sure I'm the only person on the planet who thought both Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction were pretty ordinary.

never was fan of reservoir dogs and ive seen pulp fiction one time in the theatre. it was good but i'm not dying to see it again and again. so you are not alone.
as far as true romance goes. i still love it. so many great one liners.
the scene when gandolfini kicks her ass has got to be one of the most brutal women beatings ive seen in a movie. brutal.
dick ritchie's character was great too. he was like that friend that a lot of people have that is stupid and is still in your circle of friends because you have known him for so long and once in a while he says something really funny and it reminds you of why he is still hanging around.
I know its no "walking tall", but its a goooood movie.
i dunno...i guess "I like simple pleasures like, butter in my ass and lollipops in my mouth."

Walking Tall was awesome, man. Don't front.
I don't know, like I said, I thought I liked this movie a lot. But I watched it recently and it was kinda painful.

I got quickly tired of all those action movies about slick criminals wearing hawaiian shirts and sideburns talking about The Brady Bunch before beating someone to a pulp to KC and the Sunshine Band. It was like audiences were saying "Goodfellas would have been perfect if only the characters weren't so classy and likeable. And could you work in some more references to pop culture?"
At least they're not all trying to be like that anymore, right?
I don't understand why sleazy violence is so "cool" like didn't it seem that for about 5 years the coolest guy ever was supposed to be a hitman?

Well, you're just going to have to find a way to deal with it, my friend. Your movie sucks. Face it. Better yet, watch it and pick it apart. Try to look for all the flaws in it.
I can help you:
When Clarence is in the bathroom having a conversation with his imaginary friend, Val Kilmer, why doesn't hear the 20 or so people all yelling at the top of their lungs in the next room and continues thinking he's the man.
Why does Clarence drive like a blind drunk person? He backs out into traffic full speed every single time he leaves the motel. Whatever mood he's in. Why? Who does this? It's idiotic.
Plot devices like Clarence's drivers license. Nevermind the fact that it doesn't really slip by the audience, that he was stupid enought to leave it at the pimp palace, but that he at no point realizes it himself.

just like what kind of a pimp would leave a suitcase full of blowcaine out in the open for all of his bitches to get into.
but i feel that you need to overlook small things (although the convo with elvis in the bathroom with the all guns blazing outside isn't really a small thing) like that in movies or else it takes the fun out of them. otherwise you eventually become one of those finicky 'too cool for film school' or 'too cool to not go to film school' types of people.

Yeah, but I'm hardly that type. I mean, I enjoy way too many bad movies to be one of those people. Or maybe I'm just turning into a movie snob. I actually doubt that since the last few movies I've bought/watched have been certified stinkers that I genuinely enjoyed.
By the way, Into The Blue...awesome movie.

yeah..aparently for the Rambo sequel movie bosses are making them team him up with a hip, young, multi-gender strike force. i liked the story they were knocking about with him joining right-wing anti-coverment militias in montana (that idolise him) only to take them down from the inside. looks like theyre gonna do some gayboy Rambo II/III plot rethread now. cunts.I wanted to see a First Blood style shit with him blowing up petrol stations and shit.
i just realised this post has nothing really to do with this thread, but fuck it. its here now.

Rambo II and III lacked the grit of the original. The second 2 were all glossy and happy-go-lucky.
The original was much more raw, more believable. Well, when I was a kid it seemed really believable.
all i wanted was something to eat...but they kept pushin'

Common
And if knowledge is the key, goddammit Im the locksmith
Started a missionary way on my life, the mic I rust like bostage
I switch styles like a channel with controls that are remote
Engage in a page, and with words I elope
Walking down the aisles with styles I freak the viles
Anti-nazi when I rocks like a z-28
At any rate, brothers gain interest because I loaned them microphones
They couldnt house the shit so they had to rent to own
Its like that, coming from the go rapper
I wanna bone jada pinkett and that hoe patra
So keep on, and you dont, now come on
Ah keep on, and you dont
You don't like Common?
mickill

No, I like Common. But he plays a mob enforcer in this. He's about as menacing as Justin Timberlake. Hope his acting skills are convincing.

I think the big budget movie is relic. Simplify, maaaan!
On the really really, it's high time Hollywood stops insulting us.
I saw 40 Year Old Virgin over the weekend. For comedies, there's a good re-start. (y) (y)
