View Full Version : Whitewater Rafting
Anyone ever? Im going this weekend and am pretty pumped. This will be my first time and I'll be venturing down "The Gully" in WV. I've heard mad stories about this place and apparently it's an upper class rapid, so this makes me a tad nervous.

I've done it, but never any big serious rapids. It's good fun. I like to be in front so I can make sure everybody gets soaked. (y)
Yeah, my friends know their shit. They bounce back and forth from WV in the summer(rafting) to Utah in the winter(snowboarding) every year.
thanks.

Getting soaked is inevitable, isn't it?

Oh, dear. This premise is like a river version of The Descent. :(

No -- not if you're on class one or two water.
Word. I don't know if I should have signed up for this. It's like losing your virginity to Jenna Jameson.:(

I've heard stories about people smashing into big ass rocks face first, getting sucked down to the bottom and drowning...bears jumping onto the rafts and eating people's heads....sounds kinda dangerous, man.

The bear are in the water, grubbing for fish. If the raft goes too close to their territory, they sometimes attack. People's feet in rafting slips look like fish.

You're cool with the bears, as long as you offer them a tuna melt.
I've gone canoeing and it's turned into whitewater rafting. Take nothing of value. If you have to carry your car keys, put them in a plastic baggie and tie them down.

A friend got tossed into the water and drowned his cell phone. That kinda sucked.
But, yeah -- bears love tuna melt. (y) You have to hang it off the sides of the boat or they jump right in, and their claws can puncture the raft. Not recommended.
I believe it turns into a class 4.:(
Yeah, there's bears AND poisonous snakes that inhabit the area.

Stand at the front of the raft and take pictures of the looks on everybody's faces when you get to the really rough parts, man.

Snakes on a Raft.
That could be a short movie.
Im thinkin I'll be too busy trying to hide the fact that I'm at fault for the turd floating around in the raft.

Yeah, I haven't been for years though. My cousin married a guy who owns a whitewater rafting place that also acts as a ski resort in the winter. It's up in the Adirondack Mountains in upper NY, so I now have no reason not go to rafting seeing as how it's free, I'd just have to pay for gas. They have a guest house that fits like 10, so that's pretty sweet. (y)

The Adirondacks kick ass. a friend from college got his Associates at Paul Smith's College. A bunch of us went up there on numerous occasions. That place is gorgeous.(y)

The one time I was up there was because of Paul Smith's, my brother applied to their environmental program, got in, and got a significant scholarship. University of Maryland was cheaper in the long run, though.
I love how that campus is hidden in the forest, it's beautiful. Were they there for the environmental program, or the hotel management program?
Environmental probably. He then came to my school for his Bachelors in Parks and Recreation Management.
