Was anybody else unaware of the magnificence of this song until guitar hero resurected it? Like I got the game maybe 2 months ago and its quickly become one of my favourite kareoke songs.

Boston is one of those bands that I HATED TO DEATH at the time because they were always on the radio and played at every junior high school dance, and I'm just now getting to where I can hear them and turn up the volume instead of changing the channel.
I've been working on a junior high school playlist of such bands and songs for some time now. More Than A Feeling is on there.
Oh, and thanks, because now I singing Amanda in my head. :(

Good lord -- can you actually hit those notes?
I don't know if you're male or female, so maybe that's a factor, too.

I love singing that song too.
Did anyone see Scrubs when they had an air guitar band that "played" it?

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" stole the guitar riff off "More Than A Feeling." I had no clue of this until fairly recently and I re-listened to "More Than A Feeling" and was all like: "Holy crap, they DID!"

YES!!!
And yes I can get all the notes, I am actually a professionally trained tenor and I have a pretty good range, I dont even have to go into full falsetto to get the notes in more than a feeling...and yes I am a guy, alot of people seem not to know that though. Maybe I should change my avatar and name.

The 20 million or so people worldwide that've purchased the album it was originally featured on probably knew about it.

I believe that Cobain himself said that, if anything, it would have been influenced by The Kingsmen's version of Louie Louie, since he wasn't a big AOR fan.
I think he was borrowing from Debaser by The Pixies, anyway.

Oh Dear God, but I hated this song the first time it came out and I hated it a lot and often because of the continual airplay and now thanks to Bob FM, it appears to have been exhumed so my hatred is bubbling up again.

i fought with it for years, i'm not big on AOR, but about ten years ago i realised it was pointless trying to resist

I was 12 or so when that came out, and one of my older brothers liked it a lot and we pretty much wore out the 8-track. I remebered thinking about half the album was magic, but I've never owned a copy I played: I had a picture disc which I never opened.

Listen to the opening guitar riff from "Teen Spirit" and then put on "More Than A Feeling" (specifically the guitar riff right around the chorus). Bubbling underneath is this same riff in both songs.
I know "Debaser" is name-checked as well, but Boston I can hear more.

I was looking at it like since he liked the Pixies so much and had admitted to being influenced by them, he more than likely subliminally, or even intentionally, built the riff around Debaser, not the first song off one of the biggest selling albums of all time, recorded by a group he didn't actually ever reference as an influence to him at any point.

Well, I think both of those songs (intentional or not) played a role into "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Afterall, Cobain once said it sounds like the Bay City Rollers being molested by Black Flag or Black Sabbath.
So, in other words, underground and mainstream elements were prevalent throughout Nirvana's body of work (and a big reason why out of any '80s underground band, Nirvana would be the logical choice for the first band to achieve mainstream recognition).

This whole statement confused the shit out of me.

Well, for a long time there was an "underground" scene throughout the '80s that was largely unnoticed by the mainstream, right? But in the '90s, there was the whole "alternative" explosion. And which band from the underground had the best shot of getting noticed on a massive level? Nirvana, obviously. Why them? They mixed Black Flag (underground) with the Bay City Rollers (mainstream).
So if "Smells Like Teen Spirit" has a riff very similar to "More Than A Feeling," this is a testament to why they caught on like they did.

The Clash? U2? R.E.M.?
I understand what you're saying -- grunge was accessible because it was based in british heavy metal and whatnot. But depending on when you start your timeline, you will always find a band that broke out of an underground movement of some kind or a local scene and changed the kind of music on the US charts. Even the Bee Gees did it. I'm serious. Disco was a gay thing in NYC till it broke out. One minute we were wearing jeans with handmade patches and listening to music full of political statements and the next minute we were all buying spandex pants and those thin metal belts and candies shoes and stealing the latest moves on Dance Fever.

And I loaded up my "junior high school" play list today and listened to Amanda because of this thread. I'm holding you responsible Rancid Beasties.
All of these songs sound good now. They're perfectly crafted and catchy as hell. And Tom whatshisname was apparently some kind of genius who invented something to do with guitars? The problem for us old folks is that if you lived in the US in the late 1970s, and you lived in a city other than say NYC, then the only modern music you were exposed to was Boston, REO Speedwagon, KISS, etc. If you were going to hear about other bands, you had to read unusual magazines. And imagine trying to select new music based on nothing but that.

when I wore a moustache and tailgated at Indy 500 one year we listened to plenty of it. And Journey too, Journey's great. It's nice being drunk on cheap beer when the sun rises and listening to "More than a Feeling", especially with a full, black moustache.
