View Full Version : External Hard Drives...

So, bear with me, (is it bare...or bear?), computer-savvy folk.

I have a mac mini, and it only has 40 Gigs of space (tiny as fuck, I know, but cheap). So if I get an external hard drive with say 100 Gigs, does that just mean that now I have 140 Gigs of storage to deal with? I realize this sounds like an idiotic question, but I want to make sure i get it right.

I'm going to be helping do some logging/transcript for a documentary, but a 1 hour file of their stuff is like 12 gigs on it's own, so I need more space.

Thankssss.

yep. that's how it works on my PC anyway. i can't imagine why it'd be too different on a mac

you can get more bang for your $ if you buy an internal one with more memory and buy a case for it to put it together. i thought it would be a huge task, but it was easy and worth it (y)

Yeah, but I think I should get the external one because then they can just put the video files on it and I can bring it home with me...thank you for the info though

i meant turning an internal hard drive into an external by buying a case (http://www.dealtime.com/xPP-Drive_Cases)and putting it together.

If anyone gives a rat's butt, I ended up getting this (http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10478). It's made specifically to fit with the mac mini. It was awesome, I just plugged it in and bam, I now have 160 more Gigs of space! It cost me about 150 at the apple store. Sweet (y)

Firewire, eh? You won't be able to plug that into just any computer. Mac's are good though, they all have it.

oh nos! I thought all computers had firewire. I don't know anything I spose...I'm bringing it down to this place so we can transfer some files onto it but I think they have pc laptops, oi, I hope it works!

Almost all modern digital camcorders have included this connection since 1995. Many computers intended for home or professional audio/video use have built-in FireWire ports including all Macintosh, Dell and Sony computers currently produced.

I have one on my PC (most don't), but that's because I bought it as an extra feature. Good luck.

I have a mac laptop with two external harddrives. It's the way to go. I use one to store my music library and the other as backup for everything.

My harddrives were made by that same company and cost about the same but they had firewire and USB ports. I don't know if you care. I don't understand computers. But even the new ipods don't use firewire anymore.

It's more like 136~138GB than a true 140.

DandyFop

? It's 160...and you're right it was more around 145 or so. Whatever still better
