View Full Version : CSI, 24, and The Shield

So I've checked out a few episodes of CSI now from our local library. Some interesting mysteries, sometimes, but DAMN this show's weak. Cheesey, not-funny "edgy" joking dialogue is a problem, but the acting is so.... television, too. And the sudden close-ups to pieces of evidence -- jeebus, they think the audience is stupid.
I don't understand how shows like this and 24 get all the love while something and least somewhat more grounded, like The Shield, is relatively overlooked.
24. At leats 24 is enteertaining, but it's just a soap opera. I mean, characters who, in theory, should be some of the best and the brightest do the DUMBEST fucking shit just to provide plot points. And a drinking game should be made where you take a shot each time someone earnestly says "I need you to trust me" or "I'm just trying to do my job."
And, damn, those people betray and rally fast.
And a drinking game should be made where you take a shot each time someone earnestly says "I need you to trust me" or "I'm just trying to do my job."
also, everytime somebody says "mr. president" or just "president". the first episode of the last season was great.
"mr. president! the president's been shot!"
"the president?"
"that's right, mr. president"
"mr. president, the president of russia is on line three: he's calling about the president!"
ok, not quotes, but still, they say it a lot.
24's a preprogrammed ride, but it's a fun one. it's set up so that you're supposed to feel this way about that character at this time, and then change your mind, later...you change your opinions, but you do it because the writers want you to. you don't really make your own judgments. still though, it's fun to watch, even if it's not very involving.
i've never seen the shield, but based on the thread you made, i kind of want to. CSI i don't watch and don't care to

My dad hates CSI because he was a forensic chemist for 30 years and gets mad at the inaccuracies. Some people yell at football games, he yells at people supposedly being able to get full fingerprints.
24 I've never seen, but people around here talk about it religiously. So does Brett.
Never seen the Shield...isn't that on FX?
I'll abstain from voting. :p

I totally believe in theater as a medium, even if it's on television, so I understand that a TV show aesthetic, but you've got to be able to pull it off.
So, for instance: CSI tries to have snappy dialogue, and it comes off like a high school freshman's idea of witty. And, in these scenarios, some of that stuff just wouldn't be tolerated, anyway.
Yeah, you can be unrealistic and pull it off -- The West Wing did, for a few seasons -- but CSI doesn't manage it.
24 almost does, through sheer panache, but it's still straight out of the jaw-clenched earnest soap opera lineage that creates more than the occasional disbelieving guffaw.

On a side note, does anyone else notice that the CSI people ALWAYS do their crime investigations in the dark? You think one of them would have a working light that they'd turn on, just like in real life.

In this episode I just watched, the detective is walking around in a home to which he already has admittance -- it's no secret that he's there, and he's not trying to pounce on anyone unawares -- and he's just got his penlight showing on things, exploring. I was, like: "Turn on a light, you stupid fuck!"
In another episode, the same guy's light falls on a clue and he calls for another detective. She comes to him, and he says "Look!" and -- she trains her light on the exact same spot. No extra illumination or anything -- it's just to show the viewer that, by golly, she's looking, too!

Elisha Cuthbert is on 24. Enough said.
Well, technically I should add that I don't like or watch any of these shows really, but 24 has Elisha Cuthbert. Okay, now enough said.

Yeah, I actually didn't really even know her name on the show or anything. She's just Kiefer's daughter to me.

I voted 24 but I'm probably not going to watch this years. The writing went into the toilet last year in the last 8 hours to the point of a joke. They let the main terrorist escape 3 times after having him captured? That doesn't float to well with me.
I put up with alot of goofy "love scenes" to finally end up with really nothing interesting at the end, just a prolonged stretch of blah, blah, blah.
I feel better.
Most 2 hour movies are better.

Here's a picture of the real National Counterterrorism Center in McLean, Va. (http://graphics10.nytimes.com/images/2006/08/15/us/15bush.l.jpg) just taken today. For the 24 freaks out there. It probably would make a great singles bar, 'cept for ugly standing there.
Looks like a few hot babes are hanging around.

I used to yell at "Days of Our Lives" when Marlena was possessed and I was scared because I was, like, 5 and was very, very scared of the voice.

I'm gonna have to go with the Shield. It's had me hooked for a while now and eventually, I'm going to own the whole series.
I've tried to watch 24 but I just couldn't get into it. I don't know why but, something about it just lost my interest.
CSI- Las Vegas is great. I saw 2 seasons of that. I watched all of Miami and thought they could've done better. I saw the first season of NY and I think it's the best so far. Lt. Dan as the lead is great, an insomniac detective.
A-z, for sure, another series you've gotta take a peek at is The Wire. I almost like it better any other series.

the reason why I didn't like Miami was because they emphasised too much on the "oh look, it's a hot little blonde cop" and she'd be all like, "back off bucko, I'm here for business" or some shit. And also the other guy in which all the ladies would just drool over him when he'd go the a scene to investigate. There was too many episodes like that. I know it's just a show and it's not realistic but it just seemed way too hollywoodised.
On New York, there was none of that. From I've seen so far.

I just finished season two of The Shield last night. Holy crap. The money train, and that last shot of all that cash and the guys just kind of standing around realizing they're rich/they're fucked. (y)

24 is, at least, entertaining in its supreme hush-voiced cheesiness. I can't deny that. But there are just so many groaners.
I know it's TV candy, and that's all some people want, and I'm all for suspension of disbelief, but when some of that super-obvious bullshit happens, it just yanks me right out of the fun.

She's SO. FUCKING. ANNOYING.
She has a bit part in Little Miss Sunshine. I tell ya, 120 seconds of onscreen time goes a long way for her. At least she worked in that context. (y)
she was funny on mr. show, but i dunno, i don't like her too much in a serious role

For certain, you should start from the beginning or you would be clueless as to the characters and such. Also, a main factor of the series starts in the beginning and works it's way throughout the second series. I haven't seen any of the third series but, after how the second series ended, I'm positive that the saga from the first series carries on.
What's cool about The Wire is that a whole season would be of just one huge case and it builds up throughout every episode.

Season one, discs one and two are on their way.
Blockbuster jumped my queue (The Shield, season 4) for this, so if it's not good, I'm going to take it out on your mailbox. :)
