View Full Version : The Best Beats

This thread is devoted to the best beats in hip-hop history. I've just finished listening to Nas' "It Ain't Hard To Tell" which has one of the best beats I've ever heard. What a great use of Michael Jackson's "Human Nature".

Personally, the best beat I've ever heard is from Quarashi's "Mr. Jinx". The lyrics are pretty much gibberish, but that beat is fucking amazing! That's been my absolute favorite beat since the first time I heard it on Much Music back in October 2002.

"Rebel Without A Pause" has my favorite Public Enemy beat. You can't go wrong with that sound of a tea kettle going off along with the James Brown "Funky Drummer" sample. That's just ill.

Other beats I like:
"Sure Shot"-Beastie Boys
"Paul Revere"-Beastie Boys
"Get It Together"-Beastie Boys featuring Q-Tip
"Changes"-2Pac
"Drop It Like It's Hot"-Snoop Dogg featuring Pharrel
"Electric Relaxation"-A Tribe Called Quest
"Microphone Fiend"-Eric B. And Rakim
"Don't Sweat The Technique"-Eric B. And Rakim
"Passin' Me By"-The Pharcyde
"Sky Is The Limit"-The Notorious B.I.G.

There's plenty more. Those are just off the top of my head.

I've heard other people say that about Dead Bent too. I think the OpDoomsDay version blows the original single cut out of the water.

Also, I don't know what the beat is from, but the track Green Lantern mixes with Rhyme the Rhyme Well on NY state of mind is fly.

Pretty much every DJ Premier track is one of my favourite beats, but here's a selection of non-Preems as well as Preems:

Jay-Z - December 4th
ATCQ - Check the Rhime
Dr. Dre - What's The Difference
2Pac - All Eyez On Me
Notorious BIG - Gimme The Loot
Xzibit - X

Primo Beats:
Nas - Nas Is Like
Jay-Z - So Ghetto
GangStarr - Full Clip
Notorious BIG - Kick In The Door
ODB - Pop Shots
Rakim - When I Be On The Mic
Snoop Dogg - The One And Only

mickill
08-16-2006, 09:54 AM
Made You Look - Nas
Still D.R.E. - Dre
Above The Clouds - Gang Starr
Hip Hop - Dead Prez
99 Problems - Jay-Z
The Message - Grand Master Flash
Top Billin' - Audio Two
Keep It Thoro - Prodigy
Paul Revere - Beasties
Shook Ones Pt II - Mobb Deep
PSK - Schoolly D
Incarcerated Scarfaces - Raekwon
Run - Ghostface
Microphone Fiend - Eric B & Rakim

Even though songs like Night Of The Living Bassheads and NY State Of Mind are among my favorites, I think a lot of their appeal is in the vocals. These beats sort of play the starring role.

On a side note, I pretty much hate the It Ain't Hard To Tell beat.

No, I think they were just in the studio at the time. I think Run or somebody suggested reversing the beat too. Plus they wrote the lyrics. I guess it was their song. I don't really know, man.

or

Lex Diamonds
08-16-2006, 11:42 AM
I also like Scott Scorch's beat for Cube's Why We Thugs.

And I like Got Urself A Gun, but that's not neccesarily cuz of the beat, partly the nice use of the sample and the fact it reminds me of The Sopranos opening credits. (y)

"Rebel Without A Pause" has my favorite Public Enemy beat. You can't go wrong with that sound of a tea kettle going off along with the James Brown "Funky Drummer" sample. That's just ill.

Can't forget

The Benjamins - The artist formerly known as Puffy

And these Just Blaze staples:

That is a monster. (y)

Jay-Z - So Ghetto (DJ Premier)
Eminem - Bitch Please II (Dr. Dre)
Eazy-E - Real Muthaphukkin G's (I don't know)
Ice Cube - Why We Thugs (Scott Storch)
Nas - Nas Is Like (DJ Premier)
Notorious BIG - Kick In The Door (Primo again)
Big L - Put It On (don't know who it is but for me it's the perfect semi-old skool beat)
Wu Tang Clan - Shame On A Nigga (the RZA, the razor)

Kingdom Come is probably my favourite beat at the moment. I got tired of the lyrics from over-listening to it when it leaked but the other night I listened to Superfreak and then that straight afterwards; wow. It's ridiculous how minutely Just Blaze chopped up that song and used every single tiny sound in it to compose a completely different type of music.
