View Full Version : i love doing nothing

i don't care for feeling productive because i don't like having things that i need to do. for me, my dream would be to have enough money to never have to get a job or have any obligation to do anything and just have the ability to sit around the house and do completely nothing all day (or at least, have nothing that needs to be done). people look at people like that and call them bums, and say "oh they aren't really happy, people need to be busy" but no, that's not true. sometimes i'll have maybe a week or a couple days or whatever where it's like that, i have nothing that needs to be done, and i have nothing to keep me busy, and i love it. those are my favorite days. the only bad thing about them is that it gives you time to think about how much it's gonna suck when you start having things to do again.

people say that you're just wasting your life if you do that, but i don't think so. it sounds cheesy, but i say that a life you've enjoyed wasting isn't a wasted life. how can you waste your life, anyway? whoever said that there were rules about how you're supposed to spend your life? i figure as long as you're enjoying yourself and you're not bothering anyone else, you're doing ok.

the only reason i work and try to advance my position in life, really, is because you need to, based on the rules that we've invented for ourselves. i'd love to do nothing all day, but i wouldn't make any money and i wouldn't have a place to live (my mom wouldn't put up with my bumming for long), i wouldn't have food to eat or soap to wash myself with, and in the end, i wouldn't be enjoying it at all. so i keep busy.

doing nothing is where it's at, i think. i don't like being busy.

It's kind of funny, then, that you're going to be a lawyer. :D

Although i think your analytical skillz will do you good.

Wow.

I think if I had unlimited resources, I'd go out of my mind if I sat around doing nothing or if I didn't further myself in some way. Not to mention that it would feel like a wholly selfish life to do nothing to help other people, particularly when I'd have the means (if time and money were never issues) to do so.

To each his own I guess, but I have a feeling, Bob, that you'd wind up feeling kind of hugely and completely bored and empty and ultimately, depressed.

the only reason i work and try to advance my position in life, really, is because you need to, based on the rules that we've invented for ourselves. We [Bob v. enree] see the concept of "advancing my position in life" differently. To me, advancement is not at all a fiscal thing.

I had a day like that today anyway, and it was kind of dull because i don't really know what to do with myself. What i like is when you've got some priorities but don't really have to rush to complete them. Like with my uni exams in june, i'd goto the library for the whole day but maybe only do about 2-3 solid hours of work, and the rest of the time just waste time with friends, or on a pc, or whatever. I think i like it because i feel like i'm getting things that i need to spend time on done, but i don't necessarily have a tight timetable to fit it all into. So it's pretty carefree in that sense.

Actually when you begin to work you really appreciate days off, because it's like being back to square one when you were unemployed. The only difference is money. Lots of money and equally lots of junk you suddenly desperatley need to own.

I couldn't do 'nothing' for an extended period of time. Every once in a while it's nice. But as an everyday way of being - no, I couldn't bear it. When I was still pregnant, because the baby was two weeks late, I did have a good stretch of time when I literally had nothing to do but sit and wait to go into labour. Now obviously in one sense that was an anxious time purely due to the anticipation of her arrival, but also, it was just terribly boring for me. I had no work to do, the house was clean and tidy, no errands to run, nothing left to shop for, just nothing much really that needed to be done at all. God, it was boring. I read a lot, and I do love reading, but it would have been nice to have had something to do. At one point I went and bought a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle, for that reason. (Only got it about a third finished in time; now I'll never have time for it again I think...)

It's sad but I agree. I liked waking up at 12 noon, playing video games and relaxing. I don't have an overwhelming need to be productive. Granted, I love being productive and it makes me feel really good about myself - BUT - I don't feel guilty when I sit around and do nothing, either. Unless there's something that I NEED to do that I'm ignoring. But when I was just waiting for my security clearance, it was taking walks, eating, sleeping, TV, talking online, going out at night. It was a fun time.

And also back in '02, I didn't have a job that summer so I spent all day everyday playing Zelda: Ocarina of Time, eating 7-layer dip, and going swimming in my pool. Oh, those were the days.

Whatever, now I have money so my options are limitless on the weekends.

I'm always doing something. Even when it seems like I'm doing nothing. I'm usually at least thinking about what I should be doing. Unless I'm asleep.

I can't stand doing nothing, to a fault. I'm horrible on vacations. I can't even just sunbathe anymore -- I either have to do it while I sleep or I need to be reading or drawing or something.

My favorite days are when I'm so lazy I don't even have the energy to jerk off. Good times.

i'm a sloth when i get in a groove.
i can do nothing like nobody's business

of course i do things, but that really means listen to/play music, rollerblade, write, read and/or smoke pot.

to each their own.

yeah, that's what i meant too. like i won't literally do nothing, i won't stare at a wall, i'll just do little entertaining useless things all day.

Don't bash staring at walls till you've tried it.
