One of those mornings where I think the hand of God might've been on me in a small, nice way:

I've rarely slept through a clock's alarm in my life, but did this morning, by an extra 90 minutes. Yikes! Still enough time to do the exercise bike, shower, and get to the stop in time for the second bus.

Turned out the first bus hadn't run, anyway -- the driver didn't show up, so it wouldn't have mattered, anyway. Nice "coincidence," but it would also mean that the second bus would be twice as full, and possibly no space on the bike rack (or inside the bus) for my bike, thereby bumping me to the next bus, making me REALLY late.

The second bus pulled up, and nobody else had ridden a bike, which I haven't seen since I've moved here. So I wound up only getting here 30 minutes late, still making me the first one at work, so all's well that ends well!

I would have been thrilled by the extra 90 minutes sleep, forget everything else :)

Unfortunately, I managed to get up on time today which meant I caught the early train. I didn't get to sit where I like but ended up next to a man in bicycle shorts who was making grunting noises all the way to work which meant it was either tolerate or deafen myself with my ipod. I tolerated

I arrived 30 minutes late as well.

I was stuck in an underground tunnel for 20 minutes, getting panic attacks. Our train broke down and we had to have another train come pull us to the next station. We all get off at the next station, they get rid of that train, bring us a new one FULL of people. So we jam 2 trains into one, I'm up against the wall with some sweaty guy pressed up against me. It's like this for another 20 minutes. And some business dude in a suit was dragging a HUGE wheeled suitcase behind him, must have been 40 pounds. Ran right over my feet. Naturally I squealed out "Ow!" but he didn't hear it...or at least, didn't acknowledge it.

That was lovely. (n)

fill me in...you ride an exercise bike in the morning, then a bicycle to the bus, which takes you to work?

couldnt you have just gone to work on your bike and save time and get the same amount of exercise?

p.s. my girlfriend and i woke up to a bathroom floor covered with water, the lady above us left her sink on and it overflowed into our unti- we were both late today

...a guy wore bicycle pants... to take the train?

I'm not crazy about seeing dudes in bicycle pants even when they're riding a bike, but at least they have an excuse. (!)

He had one of those folding bikes so you're allowed to carry those on the train unless you're travelling into London during rush hour (which I wasn't)

I did feel slightly uncomfortable. It was far too early for being able to see random male parts under yellow lycra. And with the grunting, it was all too much. It has to be at least 9am and a cup of coffee before I can deal with that :D He reminded me of sex-noise man at my gym.

Nah -- it's a whole different aminal.

In the morning, my bus stop (to the VTA bus -- follow me on this one) is about five blocks away. That bus takes me about 12 miles to the BART station, where I pick up the AC bus for free, which then takes me about 3.5 miles to work.

Besides, if you're riding in city traffic, it's so much start/stop unpredictability, it's more pragmaticism than serious aerobic activity. To me, anyway.

I ride the 3.5 miles after work to save me the AC fare in that direction, but it's only 10-15 minutes in fits and starts, so it really doesn't count. Plus, biking on an empty stomach first thing in the morning is way more efficient to burn bodyfat.

That is true.

The 20 minuytes of work I had the other day stretched into a blissful 40 minutes, and I still have one bag of extension cords and such to sort through.

Whoo hoo! (y)

by the way, do you remember when you and mythago would always be here posting right when I got out of the shower in my morning routine? I think there'd be a daily thread and we'd all chit chat.

You posting something about mornings made me think of it.

Yup.

Bad public transportation (I'm looking at YOU, Sacramento and YOU, East Bay, California) really sucks. Two jobs I had would've taken 90-120 minutes, one way. This area's pretty good -- even running on two different transit lines with a 15-20 minuye layover, I get to work in under an hour and get home in 40-45 minutes. Not a bad price to pay to have the job I was offered but live in a city with a way higher quality of life.

Plus, I pay $122.50 a month for transportation, period (unless I get a flat tire). That's so much cheaper than having a car.

Up to a point. On a morning empty stomach, the body snags bodyfat first for fuel, up until about 30-40 minutes of aerobic exercise (ddepending on whether you're at your target heart rate); then it starts eating up muscle.

Pros cons to exercising on an empty stomach or first thing in the morning, and big debates about how fat is burned then or in general. If exercising in the morning, first thing, was a proven way to burn fat first, then guaranteed that a lot more people would be doing it. People are always looking for a shortcut.

I'd say this: just find a time when you 1) can exercise consistently and 2) will want to do it and go from there.

Interesting how many people not just here yo-yo diet and yo-yo exercise and yo-yo weight gain and then go on to advise people about what is science in this regard. Must drive the trainers at my gym crazy to hear it day in/out.
