1) I don't feel like doing the research, and
2) I want to give some folks a chance to look really smart.
Okay: you lift weights and perhaps get muscle soreness because lactic acid is leaving the muscle (I think).
Lactose is a part of milk (I'm fairly sure).
Lactic... lactose. Is there a connection?

Yeah, lactose is an amino acid in your body made from animal proteins (found in milk) which is why it is unhealthy not to eat or drink dairy products, cuz you need the protein to break down the lactic acid "lactose debt" that you get in your muscles after prolonged exercise, when you run out of glucose and begin to use the less useful proteins in your body for energy.
That's sort of right. I haven't studied Biology for a couple years and I only got a B.

lactic acid is a fermentation product of lactose (milk sugar). it is present in sour milk, koumiss, leban, yoghurt and cottage cheese. the protein in milk in coagulated (curdled) by lactic acid. lactic acid is produced in the muscles during intense activity.
of course, i knew this from standard grade chemistry.

Interesting. And a much faster response than I'd expected. (y)

(lăk'tōs')
interestingly, in greek mythology some say that juno, when she tried to nurse hercules, spilt her breast milk from which arose the galactic path traveled by the olympian gods.

Yeah, I never took chemistry. :)

ha, no, i was being sarcastic. that was a total google job.
i knew they must be related though because of teh greek.
edit: isn't it! very interesting. see, words are fun.
a knowledge of greek/latin words is a total advantage for quiz machines/pub quizzes.. c'est super!

I figure anyone who bothered with chemistry knows all this shit.

not that right. the body doesnt NEED lactose to break down lactic acid. lactic acid is a by-product of cellular respiration. cellular respiration goes into overdrive when you exercise, thus lactic acid buildup in your muscles which makes them sore. now, the conventional knowledge of lactic acid was that it harmed the muscle. but new studies have found out that lactic acid is a beneficial part of building up muscle when working out. it encourages strength in future exercise. in any form, it's not healthy when you exercise and dont cool down. the cooling down process spreads the lactic acid which tends to build up in some muscles (unevenly).
as for needing lactose to break down lactic acid - hardly. else how would vegans deal?
