i think it was chuck D who said that he doesnt like the use of the word nigger in songs because it's a word that was originally used to refer to black people by racists, to put them down.

i'm still undecided, but it sounds like he has a point to me.

exactly. theres a history behind it, and i just though some people may find it silly to keep using that word, and in some way keep digging up the past. if they can use it and it doesnt bother black people then that's fair enough.

To me its all about how the word is used. If your arguing or getting in a fight with someone and you use the word to get them pissed then yea i can understand that. (along with many other words)

But in a rap song its different. Most of the songs that ive heard with that word included didnt use the word to talk badly about someone else..its usually like.."my nigga's...or something along those lines.

For myself, I dont like to use the word in any situation because i wouldnt want the other person to feel badly or/and get pissed at me. I'm an awesome guy though:cool:

Being an African american myself, I try not to use the word often, but its still a word that I use at times. As far as why we use it and feel offended when a white person says it, is because of how the word was used by racist; and the hurt and verbal pain it caused. The word has been added to our culture as just another one of those negative things we try to turn into a positive. For example, during slavery Africans were fed scraps, and left overs. But to flip that situation we tried to make the best of it and season and prepare the foods differently so that they would at least be okay enough to eat, even if it wasn't the healthiest food to begin with. By using the N word its somewhat the same thing. Trying to take some thing good from a bad situation or experience. I also feel that alot of my people feel offended when white people say the word is because we feel that if you know how the word was used in the past by many people of your culture, their should be something within you that would keep you from even thinking of saying the word. But this is just my opinion I can't speak for everyone.

I've been a teacher for 5 years. I taught in a rich, private school in Florida up until this year. Only a couple black kids and it never came up.

I just took a job in a "poor" school with a very diverse student population. If anyone uses that word in my presence, white, black or other, they're going to the dean.
