In sister to mickills thread (and for the geeks amongst us) - the most important cult band of the decade. To keep everyone happy!
60's - Velvet underground
70's - The Stooges/Ramones
80's - Violent Femmes/Minor Threat/Sonic Youth/Pixies
90's - slint/pavement/Spirtulized
What about nowwwww??
Mars volta? After initial big hits bands like the vines and futurheads could be interesting cult bands?
discusssss!

anyhoo...cosmo's indie rock credentials aside...
for the 2000s...i'll go with four tet. not really a rock band...but there is nothing inspiring about rock music at the moment.
just look at some of the bands this guys has played with over the last few years...faust, explosions in the sky, beans, battles, kid koala, prefuse73, caribou/manitoba, papa m, animal collective...his albums are pretty much all gold. it's like some kind musical equivalent of an impressionist painting, but with a heavy beat. it satisfies all parts of my brain, at the same time.

I think for 20 years it's just been the Flaming Lips or Rocket from the Crypt.
Before the decade is up somebody will appear and change the climate of music.
Girltalk (http://www.girl-talk.net/) is up there as far as cultish D.J'ing. samples (http://hype.non-standard.net/search/girl%20talk/1/)
60s: amm/vu/pink floyd/soft machine
70s: stooges/mc5/new york dolls/stranglers
80s: jesus & mary chain/stone roses/joy division/spacemen 3
90s: brian jonestown massacre/my bloody valentine/spiritualized/royal trux
00s: broken social scene/dead meadow

I find that I always dislike the bands/artists that are name checked by the next wave of indie musicians. In the US, everyone mentions Patti Smith for instance.
You might need separate US and European lists, because I refuse to believe that a band is super influential if I've never heard of it.

Again, maybe we'll need some distance to properly determine the "cult band" of this decade.
But one artist I think deserves a mention for this decade...
Sufjan Stevens
Dude is getting lots of coverage for his "50 states project" (recording albums dedicated to all 50 states, he's done a "Michigan" and "Illinois" album so far 48 more to go ;) ).

I almost put Sufjan up here too, your on it. Been listening to Sufjan on a daily basis for a month now.
Glad to see his name on this thread.

I can't stand Broken Social Scene. Or BJTM (despite seeing them twice this summer, I just don't get them)
You need to define cult for me if possible.

I remember seeing House of Love in Seattle 90-something there were less than a 100 people in attendance. They put on an amazing show, absolutely stellar. I guess everybody else in Seattle was posing at the grunge bars.
I am a dorkus micporkus, cause I have albums by each of your cult bands.

I'm just equating "cult" to "not mainstream", that's all.

I would have to add (the) Melvins late 80's early 90's, to sort of balance out the Manchester scene.
Cause afterall, Mudhoney

I suspect that we're talking mass suicide.
This board knocks me out sometimes. It's the only place where people have listened to the more obscure stuff in my collection, but every once in a while I learn something new that mystifies me. I had never heard of shoe gazing, even though I actively dislike many of the bands in the wikipedia article. I refuse to believe that Sigur Ros belongs in that crowd. How do we change the wikipedia article and have that removed?
Now I look up the Slints and learn there's something called "Math Rock." WTF? Steve Albini is such a tool when he's interviewed, so I've avoided a lot of the things he was involved with. My fault.
g-mile -- "cult" "rock" "band"
