I've always wondered about it from time to time.

We all know what MCA means and the name Mike D is self explanatory but what about Adrock?

Is Ad supposed to stand for Adam or something?

Somebody drop some knowledge on me :D

I think that at the beginning was a short version to say "Adam Rocks!"....but it did not dounded very nice, so he cut it in "AdRock"....and he added "King" to encrease the importance of his character :)
Well...this is my theory... I dunnow exactly the meaning of AdRock and I never asked it to myeself 'cause it sounds damn good!

It's a wordplay, Ad hoc is latin for freestylin' (or something very similar, meaning you have to quickly react to an unforeseeable situation).

Actually, I'll always thought it was a wordplay reference to the Bad-Rock Bed and Breakfast. (http://www.badrock.com/)

I believe the answer is that King Adrock is a play on the Run-DMC song, "King OF Rock". In fact, Adrock borrows the opening line of "King Of Rock" on "Putting Shame In Your Game", but twists it a bit.

"I'm the king of boggle
There is none higher!
I get 11 points off the word quagmire!"

Rumor has it that Adam a fan of Wham and George Micheal back in the day. He was such a huge fan that he was almost nicknamed the "King Adwhammy".

Now I'm picture Adrock dancing like George Michael in the "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go" music video. Disturbing.

Adam is a mathamatical genius and Adrock has a better flow than subtractionrock so they stuck with it.

ad is for adam. rock was a very common hip hop name in the early eighties...scott la rock, rock steady crew, etc...

Sir SkratchaLot

Okay, here's the deal with Adrock,

Back in the 70s and early 80s MCs and hip hoppers in general used all types of common names and combined them with their initials or nicknames.

For instatnce, a lot of people used "ski" at then end of their names, like "Lovebug Starski" "Kool Ski" or "Normski" or "Rip Ski". You also had Kool Herc, Kool Moe D, The King Cool Cee, etc., or Easy Mike, Easy AD, Eazy E, etc.

Well, adding "Rock" to the beginning or end of your name is like that. There was "Flip Rock", "CharlieRoc", "TT Rock" "Rock Master Scott" "DJ Dr. Rock", "Sha Rock", and "Adrock", among others.

There were also a lot of people who put "King" in fron of their name, or "Kid" in front of their name, or "Grandmaster", Cutmaster", Grandmixer", Grandwizard", etc.

So "Ad" just stands for Adam and King and Rock were used by tons of other people in combination with different nicknames and intitials.

So that's where the "King Adrock" comes from.

Goofy is a mutt too. but what i don't get is that Pluto sleeps in the dog house, while Goofy has a house! they're both dogs!

I guess Pluto is Mickey's dog, so Mickey is the son of a bitch that won't let his dog own his own house or sleep inside with him

Whoever said "I believe the answer is that King Ad Rock is a play on the Run-DMC song, "King OF Rock"." is correct. (y)

Adam just substituted "AD" (for Adam) in the place of the "OF" making his full mc name "The King Ad Rock"

I had a whole scrapbook of old interviews when they first came out in 1986-ish (i was in the 6th grade, lol), and in an interview Adam answered that specific question. (Also in the interview, they all talk about how they wouldnt be here if Run DMC hadnt taken them under their wing.) You'll notice that all over Liscensed to Ill Adam refers to himself as "The King AdRock".

Also, if you listen to Run DMC's song, The King of Rock, you'll notice that it sounds like some of Adam's rhymes. (or vice versa)

so, there ya go.

That's simply cuz Darryl and Joe ghost-wrote a lot of their rhymes on LTI.
