I started to post some in the family album, but I had so many that I wanted to share, so I thought I'd making a camping thread in which all yalls also post any camping photage you may have.

I went to southern utah last weekend with my boyfriend. It was awesome - he camps all the time, I hadn't been in like 10 years. He did everything so I just sat back.

Not-so-purty: The Jerusalem cricket, otherwise known as "creepy-killer-alien-bug" that decided to hang out near our campsite one night. Freak ass looking thing.

So, I was in the middle of my first mushroom experience, when I go over to pee nearby. I'm sitting there and I realize I'm too close to him, I feel funny, so I go farther away behind the car. I'm wearing a headlamp thing, and as I'm getting ready to relieve myself, I look over and on the tree next to me, is this:

Yeah. Awesome actually. Everyone's like "weren't you scared!" especially since spiders freak me out most of the time, but he was just chilling and eating that bug in his tree, not close to our tent, so whatever.

Next morning, this is my "woody allen goes camping" mug

Why drink a beer with breakfast at 8 a.m.? Because I can.

nice photos! nice place, nasty creatures. i couldn't do that. no way jose.

i pretty much straight up dislike camping.
i don't understand why anyone would do it for pleasure, on their own. it is fun if you camp with a big bunch of people - a festival, maybe (although nearly everyone i know - and this may just be a delightful practice here in the uk - who has camped at festivals has had some random shit, as in some stranger defecate in their tent), a large group of friends at some nice site for an event, a bbq, some beers. but on your own? no thanks! i'm a bed and shower kinda gal, myself.

in my long and illustruous camping history (my dad was in the army so we had delightful miltary-style camping all through my childhood on camp beds) i was always the person who slept on a slope so that all the blood would rush to my head, or in the corner where everything was flooded, or sleeping next to the couple who are making out, the guy of which i am totally in love with and hearing it is breaking my heart, or sharing my sleeping bag with assorted insects that always manage to get in no matter how 'secure' your tent is, even if they are teeny wee british thingies and nothing like the monstrous beasties you photographed, which i surely would have crushed with the tent peg. i am always the most hungover person, too. but that, i guess, is my fault.

i even talked about my total dislike of camping on NATIONAL TELEVISION. we were interviewed, my boyfriend and i, on bbc news as we won tickets to go to the queen's jubilee celebrations and went to a huge concert and buckingham palace. so it was live tv and i was already bricking myself as i have a mild nervous speech impediment and wanted to be prepared for all the answers when the presenter comes out with an unscripted question:

"so claire.. look at all these people in the mall (that's the mall (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mall_%28London%29), london, not a shopping centre! the road running from the palace to admiralty arch & trafalgar square) - who have been camping all night from all over the world just to sit on a road - what do you think about that?"

cut to me: squeezing ranald's hand until it goes white.. i manage to mumble something about, uh "really hating camping" so i'm "glad i get to stay in a nice comfortable hotel room" but it shows that this event has "real historical significance to a lot of people" BLAHBLAHBLAH.

the first time i met my boyfriend's parents was shortly after that (hey, when your son appears on morning news with his new girlfriend you're pretty sure she's a keeper) and sat at dinner one of their first comments was "well claire.. at least we know you really don't like camping!"

indeedy.

Ahhh, merideth music festival is nearly here again. Camping + many beers + great music in the bush. It has the greatest natural ampitheatre you will ever see.

<3 camping

my siblings and I got lost near dusk at a campsite in Utah somewheres outside of Moab. It was kind of scary because everything was flat, brown, and looked the same.

That's a woodlouse.
were you ever asked to take woodlice into school? we were. for science. once. i thought it was sorta strange. i had to look everywhere for them under rocks in the garden. nowadays - god, i can't remember the last time i saw a wood..louse.

in scotland, though, they're called slaters. i found that really bizarre when we first moved here.

tracky
08-24-2006, 08:47 AM
I've always called them slaters too, we used to catch them as kids and use them as bait in spider webs.
