American Football does look absolutely ridiculous compared to Rugby Union. Rugby players wear a mouthguard for protection, compared to americans wearing more padding than the Michellin man and a friggin helmut. plus how fucking stop start is the game? one team for offense, one for defense, and you stop for a minute after every 10 secs of play! wtf? talk about slack.
as for rugby being something to do on a sunday afternoon, you underestimate the skil and fitness involved in rugby. it is a shitload more competitive over here and is by no means a joke of a sport. The kiwi's national team would fuck up any grid iron team anyday of the week

I'm not arguing one way or another which is a better sport between rugby and "American Football", but with all their similarities, they're two totally different sports.
I like rugby a lot, and try to catch it on TV the few times that it may be on. My original comment was more making fun of soccer.
And saying a rugby team would fuck up a football team.... playing which set of rules?
Playing American Football rules, I don't see a rugby team gaining more than 75 yards on an Division 1 college team, let alone an NFL team.
But, playing rugby rules, it would be the opposite.
And I stick by what I said of my personal experiences with playing both football and rugby. I got hit harder playing football than I ever did during a rugby game.

yeah fair enough. i didn't mean to come off critizing it, but oh well.
still think they need to lose all the padding tho :p
question, how much would nfl players be getting paid by the clubs? coz i know that even in the highest paid union player in australia is on $1 million aud. even johnny wilkinson who'd be the highest paid player in the world wouldn't be on much more than that

As in what do NFL Players currently get paid?
Depends on the player.
According to USA Today, the higest paid player was Michael Vick, making over $23 million US.
Most "star" players average in the $7-$12 million range.
I think the league minimum for the 2006 season is $250,000.

yeah well i was wondering coz i saw the other day that the 3rd highest paid sport star ever was some Quarterback that i'd never heard of. it was around $45 million US, but that was including sponsership deals and what not. plus i also read that Chelsea FC now spends more on player than the New York Yankees. so it seems there's a ridiculous amount of money in american sports that i didn't even know of!

you'd be surprised how fit most formula 1 drivers are. Ayrton Senna used to run up to 20km's a day 3 times a week in the middle of the day in the brazillian summer plus do a lot of other exercises at that time of the day because the heat in an f1 car is unbearable. f1 drivers are definately fitter than any football player of any code. plus it's one of the only sports that has the element of death in it

well pretty much every motorsport is a race to the end with a winner - it's the same with a lot of athletics (running, marathons) and the same as cycling and horse-racing. running/sprinting is definately considered a sport so i'd associate motorsport being the same.

I played rugby in college, and football in HS, and I was never hit as hard in rugby as I was in football.
Rugby's just an activity to do on a Sunday until noon when you're allowed to drink.
i'm not expert on football but i do understand it and watch it on espn when it's on.
anyway...
football players are bigger and stronger and probably more explosive.
it's a more high impact sport than rugby [which i've played since i was 9] so yeh the hits are probably harder.
but i don't know if football players could last 80 minutes of rugby.
rugby players are possibly more mobile.
i think reggie bush would be a good centre/winger in rugby.
Drederick Tatum
08-27-2006, 12:14 AM
yeah, when you have about 1000 guys on your team, the level of fitness required is very low.
hence why 35-40 year old AFL players are being given 1,000,000 bucks to kick a ball once or twice in the whole game..
Rancid_Beasties
08-27-2006, 06:56 AM
However, if you look at how far Midfielders in the AFL run per game, compared with NFL, NBA, rugby or soccer players, I think you will find that it is much, much higher. Most of them run around 20-25km per match, with intermittent sprints throughout. Its like doing a 2 hour beep test.
Thats why the average bmi of afl players is around 23, while NFL and rugby are both well above 30.

I thought you were talking about old key forwards like richo (hes like 32 now).
Judd catches up to deledio a little bit, but its alot easier to chase without having to bounce the ball. Plus deledio has a real problem with bouncing the ball more than he needs to. 3 Bounces in 10 metres, then runs 10 without bouncing (like he should've in the first place). Anyway, if there was anyone to not be embarassed about being caught by, its judd.
Why does nobody play football outside of Australia? For the same reason nobody plays NFL outside of America I guess. Have you even watched a match Padster? Its a shitload more exciting than soccer, and a shitload X 2 more exciting than rugby (league or union).

Why does nobody play football outside of Australia? For the same reason nobody plays NFL outside of America I guess. Have you even watched a match Padster? Its a shitload more exciting than soccer, and a shitload X 2 more exciting than rugby (league or union).
Yeah, NFL sucks as well. And for me football (or "soccer" as you call it) is easily the best sport, why you think pretty much every country in the world plays it?

I officially love Dandy now.
I will overlook the fact that she left out Jeff Hornacek.
(And I think we own the same glasses. Are yours Candies?)
Oh man who doesn't love Horny. He was awesome as well.
My glasses are Candies in fact!
