im really confused about this. she works on the other side of my office. she started working here about the same time as me. she’s a very very cute chick – I think maybe a little too goodie-goodie for my taste, not really someone id think twice about.

the first time I saw her in the cafeteria, she was really awkward. I was in line to get coffee behind her and might have said hello or something once, but not with any intention other than to be friendly. I feel like she might think I like her or something and is so awkward I cant figure her out. there've been times we’ve been walking towards each other in the hallway, and I’ve noticed her looking away or purposely looking at the ground as she walked by.

I was at the bagel shop below my office and saw her walk in behind me so I decided to pretend I didn’t see her, I guess to let her have her way, she’s so painfully awkward. I go to pay and we unavoidably run into each other. So I say ‘heya’ and go to pay right after her. so we know we’re gonna get stuck in the elevator together, and I guess because of that she just slowed down and waited for me, I guess being polite, I dunno so confusing. So we get on the elevator, she smiles and says “hey, so what’s up” “nothing, whats up with you, all tan”, she said she hadn’t been tanning, I said her hair must be lighter, dumb small talk. She asks me where I live, and we both walk towards to kitchen to get a soda, I go my way and she goes hers. Awkward awkward awkward.

so my question is why is this so awkward? im completely clueless. i try to avoid her because its so weird. whats the deal? Whats your take??

why does she sometimes act like she dislikes me if she likes me.I don't know, but I'd just guess that she's nervous or shy or maybe just inexperienced with talking to guys face-to-face. Do you have access to email at your work? Do your work people go out during the day for coffee/lunch? Those might be safe ways to break the ice without it being or seeming like it's more than that.

When I was younger and on campus, I worked with a group of fairly hard-core grad students who intimidated the hell out of me because of who some of them were affiliated with and what they were studying. A subset of that group barely acknowledged me and I took that to be that they were arrogant when actually, I later learned, that they were shy--terribly shy--around me. They were fine when they were with each other and they were fine in other contexts, just not one-on-one with me. I misread them for a long time.

i think everyone at work feels this way about me at first, but once most people get to know me I'm not so awkward. also, don't judge a book by it's cover, girls that you think are all nice and innocent aren't always. We had a girl start a while back, and I thought she was like some really really innocent, smart, church-going girl - man, was I wrong! She only comes in occasionally, and I'm gonna ask her out next time. She keeps on asking if there's any work over with me she can come and do - which as much as I try to make it - there's really not :( Plus she's all questiony - those kinda questions you'd ask someone your keen on.
